DAVID G. GRIFFIN, OF CHATTANOGA, TENNESSEE.
CHEMICAL coNTAiNnn.
Application led December 23, 1924. Serial No. 757,684.
This invention relates toan insect exterminator, and aims to provide a container of novel construction to be supported `on a plow in such a inannerthat the plants under cultivation will be treated by the fumes passing from burning chemicals contained in the device.
An important objectV of the invention is to provide a device of this character l0 which may be readily and easilyy positioned, and one wherein the cleaning and refilling of the device may Vbe accomplished' with facility. Y
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in 1.5 view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. f
Referring to thedrawing:
Figure 1 is a plan'view of a container or receptacle constructed in'accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is an elevational view o f one end of the container. Y
Figure 4 is a sectional viewv taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body portion which is cylindrical in formation is indicated generally by the reference character and is constructed preferably of sheet metal, although i't is to be understood that suitable material such as asbestos Vor the like may be employed in the manufacture of the body portion.
Extending throughout the length of the body portion -and arranged in spaced relation with each other are the openings 6,
which openings establish communication between the interior of the body portion and atmosphere to allow the smoke and fumes from the burning material to pass outwardly 50' from the body portion.
The body portion isformed with an elongated opening formed in the upper surface', thereof, whichv opening allows a person to Y. place the chemical to be burned within theV body portion, and at the same time affords means to -permit the interior of the body portion to be cleaned with facility.
Arranged on opposite sides of the velongated opening are flanges 7ithat'provide guideways for the sliding closures 8 formed with upwardly extended end portions 9 that afford means whereby theclosures maybe readily slid from their active positions to uncover the openings, or vice versa.
The closures 8 vare also formed with openings ,indicated at 10 that allow the smoke and fumes to pass directly upwardly from the container. The reference character 11*v indicates closures that fit within the ends of the body portion, and as shown,- these 70 closures are formed with handles 12 to fa-r cilitate the positioning and. removal of the closures. Formed in the closures 11 are openings 13 which allow the fumes to pass from the ends ofthe body portion, and at the same timeallow air torenter the body portion 5 to insure perfect combustion with# in the body portion.
Supported centrally of the body portion is a band 14 which has right angled end por-V tions 15 formedwith openings to accommo` date the bolt 16, by means of which the band. may be moved into close engagement with the body portion to clamp the body portion against movement. rllhe band is provided with an offset portion 17 which maybe positioned over a suitable beam of a plow or the like, so that when the bolt v16 is properly positioned, the band will support the body portion on a plow.
In the use of the device, a suitable chemical is placed within the body portion and lighted, it being understood thatA the body portion is positioned on a plow so that the fumes passing therefrom will come in direct 95 Contact with the plants under cultivation.
Due to the nature of the chemicals burned, the fumes arisingv from the device will be poisonous to insect life to destroy the same. n'
In a device of the character described, a tubular body portion, removable covers fornormally closing the ends of the body 5 portion, said body portion having a longitudinal out out portion, sliding closures for normally eloslng the longltudmal out out portlon, sald body portlon and slldlng elosures having openings to allow fumes to pass therethrough, and a supporting band adapted to be clamped around a Supporting beam. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afhxed my signature. f`
