Description

S. J. SORENSON STRAINER- Filed 'April 30 flue/776 e/ (f Joke/ .900.

It. {has been;experiencedj that strainers are. usually employed in cooking for straining gravy, sauces, soups-and the like A are very diflicult to clean. ,Thisresults'for theireasonothatth'e strainer. is generally in the form of a cup-likebody and frequently is inthetornrgof; a {coneWhen sticky sub- 1 stances are strained. which upon cooling thicken or harden, it .is I very diflicult to eificient use of a washcloth mg device.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed outin the appended claims, referof the invention, wherein: i a f i Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of strainer upon been embodied, a
Fig. 2 isa view in elevation taken in the direction of the; arrow '2 upon Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation taken in the direction of the arrow 3 upon Fig. 1,

. I Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken upon- Lthe line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
wherein similar reference characters designate-similar parts throughout, the invention Y '7 .is shown as embodied upon aconicalstrain- 1 er of somewhat conventionalconstruction,
although the invention mayvgbe embodied upon other types of strainers used for sine-'- ilar purposes. Thestrainer illustrated consists of an annular ring 10, which has a hook 11 formed upon its forward sideand is provided with a handle 12 at" its back. A conical tip 13 is also'provided and is held A man meaa -rn so, 1925.-flseria nogzessn 5 or other cleanas to overlap its adjacent edge. which my -invention has.

The ring 10,. the ifo-ram-inou'si material 15 and the} conical tip 13. are vertically divided-v 'so as toforin two complementalhalves. I q I The adjacent edges indicated "at 16 and ,17 upon'Fig. 5;'are'fastened together as by a hinge :18, which permits the complemental halves. to be'swungapart, from each other,
so that the bottom of the strainer can be easily eleaned -A suitable latching device Withinthe-scope"ofjtheinventionitoemploy r Y otner n1 aterial,,;as, for example pertorated I 19 is mounted upon the swinging endsof the halves of the ringlO for detachab'lyg fas'tening the hinged complemental halves together.
This'latch device canbe of any conventional construction, and is illustrated upon the drawing as consisting of a stud or keeper 20 which is adaptedtobe engaged by a U- shaped yoke 21, which is pivoted as at 22.
.In order. to prevent, .leakage atthe places I i where the strainer is divided oneedge' of each pair of adj acentedges is so constructed Thisconstruction is provided by enclosing one edge of each adjacent pair.v by a channel shaped Figs. 4: and '5 this construction is provided upon both sides of the strainer, so that there i can r t body of the S r is divided.
By theimproved construction, it will be readily appreciated-that the halves "of the.
strainer can be fastened together while used for straining and that after the substance has been strained, the halves may, be detached and-swung apart so as to enable the strainer to be easily, quickly and thoroughly cleaned; a V It will beunderstood that various changes strip of sheet metal 23-. The opposite edge I is'covered by a channel shaped stripof sheet metal 2 1, which has its inner corner reverse lybent upon itself, as indicated at 25, to form an overlap'. As clearly indicated in l may bemade in the .detailof constructionf' f without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A strainer comprising an open topped cup-like body formed of foraminous material, said body being vertically divided to form tWo complemental parts, means for hingedly fastening one pair of adjacent edges upon said parts together, and means for detachably securing the other pair of adjacent edges upon said parts together. g
2. A strainer comprising an open-topped cup-like body formed of fora-ruinous material, said body being vertically divided to form tWo complement-a1 parts, means for hingedly fastening one pair of ad acent edges upon sald parts together, and means 3 for detachably securing the other pair of adjacent edges upon said parts together, one
oi the edges of each pair of adjacent edges being so constructed as to overlap the adjacent edge.
3. A strainer comprising an annular ring and a bottom conical tip, rods connecting tachably securing the other pair of adjacent edges upon said halves together.
A. A strainer comprising an annular ring and a bottom conical tip, rods connecting said ring and tip, a foraminous material 0on neoting said ring and tip, said ring, tip and i'oraminous material being Vertically divided to form two complemental halves, means for hingedly securing one pair of adjacent edges upon said halves together, and means for detachably securing the other pair of adjacent edges upon said halves together, one edge of each pair of edges being so consrructed as to overlap its adjacent edge so as to prevent leakage.
In testimony whereof I have name to this specification.
SAMUEL J. SORENSON.
