"This invention relates to anew and proved chair bed.-
I One. of the objects or my invention is to provide a chair which can also be used as a bed. 7 Another object of my invention is to provide a chair whosefront and back can be simultaneously adjusted, so that the sa dfrontand back can be held in a variety of.
positions.
Anotherlobject of my invention is to prof vide a simultaneous adjustment for the front and back of a chair, so that when the backistilted backwardthe front is tilted fo'rf ward. I
. Another object or m iaene atevide a device of this characten having, a minimumnumber of parts, which canbe connected in an efiicien't and simple manner. 7
Another object of my'invention is to provide a device of this character, which shall be efiicient, easy to operate, andwhich will not get out of order. I, 7
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings, which illustrate, apreferred embodiment thereof. I
I Fig. l is a perspective View showing the back and the front of the chair in theflvertical position.
Fig. 2'is a perspective view showing the back and the front of the chair tilted, and
also showing a mattress which can. be placed upon the bed. I
Fig. 3 is a perspective'view showing the front and the back-of the chair tilted as much as is possible, while keeping it in the form of a chair."
Fig. 4: is an elevation, and shows the connection between the front and the back of the chair. I
Fig. 5 shows the device used as a bed.
Fig. 6 shows the operating parts in the position in which the device is used as a bed.
As clearly shown in Fig. l and in Fig. 3, the device has a seat portion 7, which is held upon backlegs L and upon'frontlegs 17 .The frontand rear legs of the chair are connected by braces 19. Additional braces are provided at the uppercorners of the chair. The seat portion 7 of the chair, as well as the other parts thereof, may be provided with springs 2, of any suitable type. The front legs 17 of the chair are connected by braces 9 and 10, and additional braces 11 and 12 may be also providedyasi clearly. shown in Fig. 1.
" The front 27 of the maybegpre-"i vided withfend brace 8.
1 As clearly sliown in F ig." 3,. the backl of the chair isprovi'ded with braces 3 and 4:, which are not-directly connected to the back ofthe chair, but are connected to 'arear frame having. legs 5,. as clearlyshownin Fig. 3. The legs 5 are connected at 24: to
bars 25:, whichare'pivotally-connected 1at26' to. the legs .L. Hence, the legs 5 always remain vertical, no matter how mu'chjthe.
'backl may be tilted. One of the bars25 'is-provided with a projection 1?, and a lever 22 'which'is pivoted at 23 to' one of the legs L, has a seriesof ratchet teeth, which are;
and then held in a number of different positions.
adapt-ed to engage the projectionP, so that when tlielever 22 is turned by means: of a knob H, the back of the chair maybe tilted- As can be seen in Fig. 2, the construction of the control'mechanism is of the simplest description because it consists merely of a single lever 22 directly pivoted to one of the rear. legs of the. chair.
tion P on one of said bars 25 is engaged by one of the said ratchet recesses. Each front leg 17 and-each rear leg L'consists substantially of an angle bar having inner j The ratchet shape of the teeth prevents any downward movement of the bars 25 when the projeclateral faces; That is, the lateral transverse faces of the said angle bars exend towards each other sothatthe members connecting the front and rear of the chair are This enables the bar 22 to be pivoted .On the outer side of one of the rear legs L. Hence, if the entire device is coveredby a suitable decorative covering, which is customary, there are no moving parts whlch canpossibly engage this covering, save the control level 22, whose movement is so slight that through slots S in the legs L. The links 36 are pivotallyconnected at 35 to levers 34, p
. located within. the structure of the chain I nected thereto, and these links 36 project 100 it will notenga'ge the ornamental covering.
. A spring 4:0 shown in Fig. 4 pulls, the lever 22 so that it will'engage the projec which are pivoted at'33 to the bars 19. The
chair at the pivots 31. through slots S inthe front legs 17 of the levers 3e are connected 1 to links 18, and
these are connected to the front 27 of the chair.
Hence, when the back of the chair is tilted,
f the front of the chair is also tilted forward at the same time, so that the chair maybe 7 easy chair or as a bed.
placed in the various positions shown in the "draw1ngs,1n which it can serve as an spring 40 is centrally located, and that its lower endis connected to the pivoted frame 50, which is connected to the'lever 22.
It will be noted that all the'connections between the front and back of the chair, pass internally between the legs of the chair, so that when the back is tilted, the covering of the chair is not caught by any-moving parts.
i In addition, the slots S firmly guide the said connections, so as to stiffen the device against any later'alfstrains, and the lever 22 is relieved from any such lateral strains.
Ihave described a preferred embodiment The links18' pass signature.
of my invention, ,butit is clear "that numerous changes and omissions could be made withoutdeparting from its spirit.
I claim: 7 s
In a chair, the combination of a seat supported upon a pair of front legs and a pair of rear legs, each said leg comprising an angle iron having a vertical. slot therein, braces connecting each rear leg to the corresponding front leg, levers pivotally mounted upon the saidbraces, a pair 0f front links passing through the slots in the frontlegs and pivotally connected to the lower parts'of the said levers and to a chair front pivotally connected to the said seat, a chair back having'a third pair of legs pivotally connected thereto, athird pair of links pivotally connected tothe third-pair of legs andto said rear legs, rear links pivot-:
ally connected to the upperends of the said levers and to the third pair of links,'on'e of. said three pair of links having a projection,"
and a control lever pivotally connected to one of the rear legs and having a series of ratchet recesses adapted to engage. the said projection. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my MAX GUBSKY, V
