In Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 the fluted periphery of the hollow cylinder 24 is provided with grooves 25 adapted` to receive individual teeth 26 that are conformed on their inner sides to the groove and may be of any predetermined' form adapted to the operation of they plaiting on their outer sides. In the form shown the inner sides 27 of the lteeth are semi-circular-and the outer faces 'are flat from end to end thus forming on each of the rollers toothed surfaces corresponding tothat indicated-inV Fig. 6. The individual teeth 26 are held in their seats respectively by connectors 28 which are fixed in projecting lugs y29 of the individual bar-like teeth 26 that extend from end to end of the cylinder.
Said connectors are also provided with the eyes 30 fastened by screws 31 to the head 32 of the hollow cylinder. The connectors 28 may be fixed to the lugs 29 by any suitable means and are shown as being riveted thereto. In Figs. 8 and 9, the connectors are represented as helical springs 33 fixed to projections 29 ofthe teeth, and connected by screws 34 to retainers 35 that are fixed to the head 32.
The base 36 of the frame is provided with two rigid uprights 37, 38. The upright 37 is provided at'its upper end with a stationary bearing 39', and said uprights 37, 38 are provided with co-axial stationary bearings 39, 40 to receive the co-axial stub shaft 4l, and the hollow shaft 9 of the lower cylinder 2. The upright 38 is provided with anupwardly projecting arm 42 which has a support 43 that may be a hollow'bearing on which is mounted the oscillating bracket 44- having the radial arms 5 and 6 provided at its ends with the journal which I mount the shafts Yof the upper cylinv der provided with teeth meshingowith the teeth of the lower cylinder.
The spring 8 operates upon the oscillator to depress the roller toward and into contact with the corrugated Vor fluted periphery of the roller 2. By the construction shown the i fluting iron or upper roller 3 may be swung Vup away from the lower vroller 2 and the material to be plaited is inserted over the lower roller and the upper roller allowed to be brought into position shown in Flg. l,
l and the rollers heated by steam are revolved by power applied to the pulleyl4, and the material is quickly plaited to the form produced in the well known manner.
By mounting the upper roller 3 on the radial arms 5, 6, and pivoting such arms at the cylinder,
bearings 45, 46 in said one end as shown in Fig. 2 provision is made whereby only a portion of a piece of fabric may be'plaited if desired, i. e., "if only one edge of a piece of fabric is to be plaited such fabric may be inserted rollers to the depth to which the fabric is to be plaited and then run through the device, and that portion of the fabric that is not to be plaited may freely extend out of one end of the rollers without interference by the roller supporting means at suchend. I claim. A l

A plaiting machineA comprising two toothed rollers adapted to mesh with each other, and to crimp `into plaits a fabric run between them; one of said rollers being stationed on asupport; and a radius arm oscillatable on said support; the second of said rollers being journaled to said radius arm and adapted to yieldingly press a fabric toward the stationed roller.
2. A plaiting machine comprising uprights; a toothed roller mounted in said uprights; an oscillating bracket hinged to one of said uprights; and a toothed roller journaled in said bracket and adapted to cooperate with the other roller for the purpose set forth. l
3. A plaiting machine comprising a hollow cylinder, a cap for one end of said cylinder; means to introduce steam into the cylinder; a `toothed shell to fit said cylinder, and meansrto fasten said shell on the cylinder.
4. A plaiting machine comprising in combination, a hollow cylinder open at one end and closed at the other end, of a cap threaded tothe open end of the cylinder and provided with a steam pipe; a toothed shell lmounted on the cylinder and abutting against the cap, and means for securing the other end of the shell against removal from said cylinder being adapted to revolve and to meshV with the corresponding cylinder. f
'5. In a plaiting machine the combination with a cylinder of 'a toothed shell for said cylinder; a stop for s'aid shell at one end of cylinder and 'a screw screwedV into the other end of the cylinder and having an eccentric projection to retainthe YVshell kon ythe cylinder. f Y 6. A plaiting machine comprising. two toothed rollers adapted to meshv with each other and to crimp a fabric run between them; a stationary support on which one of said rollers is journaled, and a radius arm oscillatable on the stationary support; the second roller beingl journaled thereon; and means to revolve one of said rollers.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at `Los Angeles, California, this 26th day of September, 1921.V f
