COATING MACHINE.
Application led February 2, 1925. Serial No. 6,165.
This invention relates to coating machines but more particularly to such as are adapted for applying paste or gum to paper bags, envelopes, and the like, and has for its pri- 5. mary object to provide a more uniform application of the coatin material. Further important objects of my invention are to prevent'dry spaces on the feed roller produced by the presence of foreign material or lumps in the vicinity of this roller, to agitate the coating material, to save labor, and in general, to provide a simplified and improved -4 coating mechanism.
The particular embodiment of my invention which I have selectedl to illustrate the principles thereof forms a part of the gump ming mechanism of a paperjbag machine, but it will be readily evident that the novel elements of this device are equally applicable to any type of coating mechanism.
. Referring to the drawing, I
Fig. 1 is aicentral, vertical section of lthe coating mechanism, and
Fig. 2 1s atransverse, vertical section on.
the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
` In the drawings, the supply of coating material is held in a suitable receptacle as 5, and this material is removed therefrom by a feed roller as 6, which in the present embodimentV directly applies this material to a gumming die as 7 The roller is preferably mounted in eccentric bearings as 8, which enable the position of this roller to be adjusted to pro/vide different thicknesses of coating layer. The method of adjusting this roller forms no part of the present in- Vvention and, therefore, need not be described in detail.
' The portion of the periphery of the roller 40 6 which faces the receptacle 5 forms a part of one wall of this receptacle and is constantly in contact with the coating material therein. This roller rotates in the direction `'indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. The thickness of the layer of coating material with- .drawn from the supply receptacle by the roller depends upon the distance of the periphery of the roller from the upturned edge 9 of the receptacle wall. Lumps of the '50 coating material or foreign matter which are present in the receptacle tend to collect at this point and these act to remove the coating material from the roller as it leaves the receptacle. Various devices have been provided to effect the removal of these obstruct-ions, but these generallyhave been manually operated.l Considerable difliculty i's encountered ingetting the operator to use such devices and the results have not beer4 tively removes all obstructions from the vicinity of the periphery of the roller as such roller leaves the supply receptacle but constantly agitates the material in thereceptacle and uniformly spreads the same over the roller. This device comprises a revoluble screw or worm-as 10, which eX- tends transversely of the receptacle" adjacent to the roller 6 and the upturned edge 9 of the receptacle. In the present embodiment this screw is directly driven from the main shaft 11 of the roller (i by means of gears 12 and 13. This screw is preferably of steep pitch and acts to continuously pushthe lumps of foreign matter longitudinally of the roller toward the end wall of the receptacle. I prefer to shape'the upturned edge of the receptacle Wall to substantially fit about the screw in the manne-1' indicated at 14 in Fig. 1.
InA the foregoing description itwill be' evident that my improved coating mechanism operates entirely automatically and is not dependent upon the will of the operator. A uniform distribution of the coating material on the periphery of the feed roller is insured at. all times and constant agitation of the coating material is provided. The mechanism is simple in 'construction and is applicable to practically any form of coating mechanism in which the coating material is withdrawn from a supply receptacle by means of a feed roller.
I am aware that the form and arrangement ,of the parts may be considerably varied withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention, and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the lfollowing claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a coating device, the combination of a receptacle for coating material, a revoluble feedI roller for withdrawing the coating material' from said receptacle so positioned relatively to said receptacle that a Wall of the latter co-operates wlth the pey riphery of said roller to determine the thickedge, a revoluble feed roller dipping intoA said receptacle and forming a moving Wall of the latter, the periphery of said roller cooperating with said free edge to determine the thickness of the layer of coating material Withdrawn by said roller, and means normally Wholly immersed in the coating ma'- terial operative to continuously abst-ract lumps tending to lodge in the pass between said rollerand said fixed Wall.
3. In a coating device, the combination of a revoluble feed roller, a receptacle for coating material formed with an up-turned end Wall terminating in a free edge parallelv with and narrowly spaced from the periphery of said roller and co-operating with the latter to determine the thickness of the layer of coating material Withdrawnfrom said receptacle by said roller, and a revoluble member in said receptacle located behind vsaid end Wall and closely adjacent to the free edge of the latter and the periphery of said roller operating to agitate the material in said receptacle adJacent to said roller, to Withdraw lumps tending to clog the 4pass between said end wall and roller, and to eect a uniform distribution of the coatingmaterial on the periphery of said roller.
4. In a coating device, in combination a receptacle for holding a supply of coating material,` a revoluble feed roller for Withdrawing said material therefrom, and a substantially helical member revoluble in said receptacle adjacent said roller to agitate the material therein and provide a uniform distribution of said material on theperiphery of said roller.
5. In a coating device, in combination a receptacle for holding a supply of coating material, a revoluble feed roller ope-rating therein to Withdraw said material therefrom, a revoluble screw -member mounted in said receptacle adjacent said roller with its axis substantially parallel with the axis of said roller to cause a movement of said material longitudinally of said roller and means for actuating said screw.
