IMPRCVEMENT IN LIFE-'PRESERVING STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 161,670, dated April 6, 1875; applicaion filed November 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. Onoss- WELL, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Life-Preserving Stool 5 and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved stool. Fig. 2 is a section of same.
The object of my invention is to so construct the ordinary stool now in use on steamboats and other vessels that the same will possess sufficient buoyancy to sustain the weight of one person in the water in cases of accident or disaster.
In my invention I construct the top, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,by gluing or otherwise securely fastening together the parts that compose the same, the upper one being flat, as in the ordinary stool, while the other one is hollow and hemispherical in form, thus making between the two parts an air-chamber, A, as shown in Fig. 2. I also make the legs, as shown in Fig. 2, with an air-chamber running nearly their entire length, which, with the airchamber in the top, greatly increases its buoyancy, and renders it capable of sustaining a person in the water for any length of time.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A life-preserving stool having the air-chamber A, and with air-chambers formed in the legs, substantially as set forth.
HERBERT E. OROSSWELL.
