Description

Patented Feb, 8, 1927.
:IAE criosunn.
AApplication flied March 2e, 192i. serial No. 456,303.
The invention relates to new anduseful improvements in jar particularly having a straight An object of closures, and more to a jar closure for a` glass jar outer side wall.
the invention is to provide a jarclosure whichmay be sealed to the jar without reshaping or bending the metal of the closure.
In the drawings- Figure l is a sectional view portion of of the upper a jar showing my improved closure as loosely applied thereon;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the closure as Figure 3 is a view similar sealed to the jar;
to Figure 1,
but showing a slightly modified form of the depending portion carrying the flange at the outer edge of the closure;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, but Showing theV sealing material as sealing the closure on the jar.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a closure preferably of metal, which vincludes a top portion, a depending portion extend- '35 ing along close to the outer side wall of wardly projecting portion,
the and van tion at the lower end flange at o utwardly depending outwardly projecting orthereof and a depen ing the outer extremity of said projecting portion. This outtogether with the flange forms a pocket in which is placed a sealing ring which is formed of material capable of maintaining its new shape, ing ring` may be rerormed is placed wedged between the depending being reformed and so that said sealafter the closure on the receptacle and thus be flange and the side wall 'of the receptacle not only sealing the jar but maintaining the closure lon the jar.
Referringniore in detail to the drawings,
my improved ar closure portion l consists of a top which is formed into a rounded channel portion 2 adapted to engage over the extreme upper edge of the wall of the jar, which is indicated at 3. has a depending portion a, which along adjacent the outer wall of the jar y and at the Said closure extends lower edge of this de endin@ or- 'tion there is an outwardly projecting portion 5 and at vthe outer extremity o-f said 6, together portion 5,
projecting portion 5 there is a flange 6. This depending flange with the outwardly projecting forms a pocket 7 of substantially drawings.
constantishape, in which is placed a sealing ring 8. This sealing ring 8 is preferably made of rubber which has not'been. vul-..
Acanized to any extent, so that the rubber may be mol-ded or reformed andmaintainl its new shape. The ring may be caused to adhere to the closure and forni a part of the closure. This'ring 8 incross section is preferably of` greater area than the cross sectional area ofi the pocket 7 ydown to a horizontal line at the lower edge of the flange 6.
Aclosure constructed as noted above is .placed on the jar, which may be placed under vacuum, if desired, the closure then pressed down on to the jar and while it is held pressed down on to the jar by a suitable tool or instrument, the packing ring is engaged Vfrom below and crowded up into the pocket, asf indicated in Figure 2V of the This crowding of the sealing material into the pocket 7 fills the `pocket and causes the material to make close contact with both the inner wall of the projecting portion 5, the inner wall of the flange 6 and the outer wall of the glass jar receptacle. This forms a very ef cient seal for the Aclot-ure forthe jar and at the same time, through the adherence of the sealing materialvto the wallof the jar, holds the closure firmly on the jar. It will be note sealed without reforming or reshapingthe metal in any way. Closures hereto-fore, so far as l am aware, have all required some reshaping or bending of the metal parts.
:This is more or less liable to cause a break-- ing of the glass of the jar, but by my device,
-where the sealing material alone is reshaped Vgripping' of the sealing material against the side wall of the p In the structure shown in Figures and il, the depending flange 4 of the metal closure l that the jar is closed and is bent outwardly at 9, so -as to forni a tapered. portion l0, into which the pocket 7 leads. The flange 6 also is vertical. Otherwise, the closure is similar in construction to that shown in Figure l. The sealing material when it is crowded into the pocket 7 is also crowded up into the tapered portion 10 of the pocket and makes a very tight seal at this point in the closure. Otherwise, the structure and the mode of operationV are the same. y
VIt is obvious that minor changes iii the details of construction niay .be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention,
y as set forth in the appended claiin.
Having thus described iny invention, Wliat f I claiin as new and desireto secure by Letlll .ters Patent, is: l
A metal closure for Jars having a stra-ight side Wall, said closure having a depending portion extending .along the side Wall of the AJar and of substantially the saine internal diameter as the external diameter of the jar, said depending portion( being bent away from the Vside of the Wall of the `Ajar and spaced Itherefrom so4 Vas to forni a pocket of substantially fixed cross section, a sealing ring adapted to be llocated Vin said pocket eoinposed of material capable of being reshaped and maintaining its new shape Without being confined by the re-sliaping of the rpocket containing said sealing material, said sealing ring being of suiicieiit size so asV to initially project below the lower edge of the closure whereby said ring niay be engaged by suitable tools for pressing thexsealing ring into the pocket and re-sliapinjg the saine therein soV as to canse said ring to THOMAS LUCIEN TALAFEPRQ.
