IMPROVEMENT IN AWLS FOR SHOEMAKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161.562, dated March 30, 1875; application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVESTER A. SMITH, of Muscatine county, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Awl and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a side view of my awl.
The invention relates to a novel improvement in shoemakers awls, whereby the usual bristles on the waxed ends of threads are rendered entirely unnecessary.
A represents an awl, having the notch a i11- clined toward, and the notch a inclined from, the point. The thread has one of its small ends placed in the notch 11, which opens toward the point, and is then pushed through the leather with the awl. Before retracting the awl the other end of the thread is placed in the notch a, that inclines from the point, the awl then being withdrawn with the thread.
The effect is to form the same stitch usually made with a common awl, thread, and bristles. I save the cost of the bristles, the expense of applying them, and am enabled to sew much faster. I also make the end B flat, and with edges 1) b sharp, so that the sewing is done with more facility and increased rapidity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- An awl having the inclined notches a a, as and for the purpose described.
