GAS REGULATOR non Bunnies.
Application filed. January 4, 1923.
This invention relates to automatically acting gas regulating devices or valves, particularly for use with gas burning steam generators, and has for its object to provide a simple, substantial and practicable form of valves for reducing the amount of fuel supplied to a steam generator as the steam pressure reaches a predetermined degree, and for admitting more fuel as the steam pressure falls below the desired degree.
One embodiment of the invent-ion is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section through the embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The device shown comprises a substantially cylindrical shell 2 having a removable bottom 3 to which is connected a gas supply conduit 4. The upper end of the shell is provided with a head 5 and to this is connected a steam pressure pipe 6 leading from a steam generator to which fuel is supplied by the present regulator, and therefore as steam pressure varies in the generator, it will also vary in the steam chamber of the regulator.
Slidably mounted in the regulator is a suitably packed piston 7 having a down wardly extending flange 8 and this is designed to cover and uncover longitudinally spaced series of peripherally disposed radial :5 ports 9. In its lower position the piston 7 covers all of the ports and as steam pressure falls in the steam chamber 6, the valve like piston is designed to automatically lift and this automatic action is secured as by H? means of a piston rod 10 extending through the head 5 and being connected to the contiguous short arm 11 of a lever fulcrumed on a standard 12 and upon the outer end of which lever there is provided a variable weight or counterbalance 13. This counterbalance may be shifted along the lever arm 11, or the effective weight of the counterbalance 13 may be varied by adding or removing weight sections.
As the piston moves upwardly and uncovers the radially disposed ports 9, the gas Serial No. 610,708.
flows outwardly therethrough into an annular chamber 2 formed within a wall or band 2, which is shown as forming a portion of the shell 2. At a suitable point in the band 2 there is attached a gas outlet 14 extending to the steam generator to supply fuel thereto, but which is not here shown. As the quantity of fuel passing through the gas pipe 14 to the generator increases the flame of combustion and pressure in the generator is raised, this pressurebecomes effective in the steam chamber 6 of the shell upon the piston 7 and this is forced downwardly after the pressure has reached a predetermined point, overcoming, for instance, the counterbalancing effect of the weight 13 on the piston actuating lever 11.
From the above it will be seen that the action of the valve or controller is constant and automatic; the piston raising as the steam pressure in the chamber 6 falls, and then alternately shifting back over the gas ports 9 as the steam pressure overcomes the counterbalance, so that the flow of gas from 7 the outlet 14 is constantly regulated and varied.
In the event of the collection of Water from condensing steam in the chamber 6, this is carried away as by means of a drain 30 pipe 15 which leads down and is connected to a water trap of any suitable type indicated at 16.
Various modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A cylinder having a series of radial gas outlet ports therein and a jacket surrounding said gas outlet ports, upper and lower so heads removably secured to said cylinder, a piston within said cylinder, a rod connected to said piston and extending upwardly through an opening and packing gland in the upper cylinder head, a lever connected as to said piston rod and fulcrumed on a standard, a counter-weight slidably adjustable on said lever, adapted to counter-balance said piston and a water collecting device connected to a pipe entering an opening in the up per portion of said cylinder, said piston adapted to close all of said gas outlet ports When it engages the lower cylinder head and uncover all of said gas outlet ports when it engages the upper cylinder head, there being a gas inlet in the lower cylinder adapted to receive a pipe leading from a gas supply, a gas outlet in said jacket surrounding said cylinder adapted to receive a pipe leading to the burner of a steam generator from which extends a steam pipe leading to the upper cylinder head.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification.
