Description

PATENT OFFICE.
STANISLAW KIELAR, OF MILWAUKEE, VIISCONSIN.
BUCKLE.
Application filed March 3, 1925. Serial No. 12,873.
This invention relates to buckles.
Objects of this invention are to provide a buckle which may be formed from sheet metal, and which is composed of only two parts so formed that they may be readily assembled and may be readily stamped in a simple and cheap manner permitting the rapid and cheap manufacture of the buckle.
Further objects are to provide a buckle which will join the ends of a strap or belt and will securely lock the belt against slipping without requiring apertures in either and of the belt, and to provide a buckle which is readily detachable from both ends of the belt.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional View through the buckle.
Figure 2 is a face view of the buckle with parts broken away and with parts in section.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The buckle comprises a main body portion which is provided with side flanges l preferablyl formed with rounded end portions. These side flanges are joined by integral spaced bridge pieces 2. The movable portion of the buckle comprises a tongue 3 mtegrally formed with a body portion 4e, such body portion being preferably provided with marginal flanges to increase its stiffness. The portion L is further provided with a pair of slots defined by transverse bars 7 and 8 one of the bars, preferably the bar 7, is provided with inwardly directed prongs 9 adapted to engage the overlapped end l() of the belt, as shown in Figure l. rlhis is readily accomplished by threading the belt upwardly through the first slot and downwardly through the second slot, t-he end of the belt being received between the flanges 5, as shown in dotted lines in Figure l.
In using the buckle, the tongue 3 is adapted to press a portion of the overlapping end 11 of the belt upwardly between the bridge pieces 2, it being noted that the tongue is pivotally mounted between the flanges l. This pivotal mounting is secured by means of trunnions l2 formed integrally with the members 3 and 4 of the buckle and carried within sockets 18 pressed into the fianges l, as shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3.
In forming the movable portion of the buckle, ears are formed during the punching operation on opposite sides of the body portion l. Thereafter, these ears are rolled over to provide the round projecting trunnions l2. It is to be noted particularly that these trunnions are not merely the thickness of the sheet metal from which the movable portion is formed but that they are formed by a rolled portion of the sheet metal and consequently their strength is materially increased.
It will be seen thata. buckle has been provided which is very stronOV although it may be formed from relatively thin sheet metal, and it will be noted further that the construction of the buckle is such as to permit extremely cheap production thereof.
It is to be noted further that by pivoting the tongue 3 between the bridge pieces that "'f a very secure grip is afforded by deflecting a portion of the overlapping end ll of the belt upwardly between such bridge pieces` as shown in dotted lines in Figure l, and thus precluding slipping of the belt.
It will be seen further that a buckle has been provided in which extremely simple means of forming the trunnions are employed, and in which on the Aother hand a separate panel pin is avoided, and on the other, an increase in strength over simple projecting ears has been attained without increasing the cost of the article.
Although the invention has been described. in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A buckle for a strap comprising a channel shaped body portion having projecting flanges and having a pair of spaced transverse plates joining said flanges, a movable member positioned between and pivotally carried by said ianges, said movable member having a long outwardly extending arm for the reception of one end of said belt and having a `short arm located between said plates when the buckle is in locked position and rigid with and at an angle to said long arm, said short arm projecting upwardly in til) spaced relation to said plates when the buckle is in locked position and adapted to be rocked inwardly away from said plates when said buckle is unlocked, said long arm having n pair of spa-ced bars sind having an intermediate bar located between said spaced hars, said intermediate bar having' a series of prongs directed towards the short arm of said movable member the adjustable end of the strap extending in epproximzitelv one l0 direction and bcinzg` free from reverse bends when said buckle is locked.
