E. PRESTAGE HIGH PRESSURE GAS COMPRESSOR Filed Jan. 7 3925 A T T o R N E Y Patented 18 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN PBESTAGE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, AS SIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO H. J WEST AND COMPANY LIMITED,
OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
HIGH-PRESSURE GAS COMPRESSOR.
Application filed January 7, 1925, Serial No.
This invention relates to an improvement in or modification of the high speed gas compressor described in United States Patent Specification No. 1,167,658 dated Jannary 11th, 1926, as used for refrigerating purposes and has for its object the provision of means whereby warying evaporator pressures may be admitted to the compressor successively so that increased efficiency is obtained.
In connection with refrigerating apparatus it is ordinary practice to employ a compressor common to several requirements as p for example, the manufacture of ice and storage of comestibles which are required to be maintained at a comparatively high temperature to that used for ice making or the storage of frozen meat, so that in the case of storage of some comestibles a higher evaporator pressure prevails as compared with that required for ice making or frozen meat storage, and according to this invention as hereinafter described by theadmission of such higher evaporator pressure into the com ressor at or near the end of its suction stro e the gas within the cylinder at the lower pressure is partially compressed prepzliratory to the compression stroke taking ace. P The prevailing ressure of a fore-cooler when such is used in connection with the cooling of water preparatory to the manufacture of ice would equally well serve the purpose.
In order that my invention may be readily understood reference may now be had to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated in sectional elevation so much of a com ressor of the type to which reference has een made with m improvements applied thereto in which t e cylinder 1 is rovided with two annular chambers 2 an 2 the former co-acting with ports or passages 6 in the sleeve valve 4 as described in Patent Specification No. 467 of 1914 whilst the latter co-acts with the ports or passages 6 when the same are uncovered by the descent of the piston 7.
Presuming now that the compressor is employed for the dual purpose of making ice and the maintenance of a store at a suitable temperature for the preservation of eggs the evaporator pressure in the former ins ance will be very much lower than that in the latter, consequently if the suction 956, and in Great Britain October 18, 1924.
pipe from the ice making tank or eva orator is connected up to the belt or cham er 2 and the suction pipe from the store e chamber or evaporator in connection t erewith to the belt or chamber 2' it will be obvious that by the descent of the piston 7 and the downward movement of the sleeve valve 4 the cylinder will be first charged with gas at a comparatively low pressure and when the piston 7 has descended sufficiently and the sleeve valve 4 by its return upward movement having closed the ports 6, the orts or passages 6" are brought into register with the belt or chamber 2" b the upward movement of the sleeve va ve 4 and the higher pressure prevailin in the stor e evaporator coils will be a mitted to t e cylinder from the belt or annular chamber 2 and compress the gas already therein preparatory to the efl'ective upstroke of the compressor piston.
O viously when a fore-cooler is employed in connection with the compressor the cold gas coming from the evaporator ismore or less heated by the water used for ice making and consequently its pressure is thereby raised and this may be connected up to the belt or chamber 2 and used for the purpose set forth.
Under certain circumstances a difference of evaporator pressures may not be available and in order to ensure the complete filling of the cylinder with gasfrom the evaporator I belts or chem rs 2 and 2 by the passage 8 which is opened or closed by the manipulation of the stop valve 9 associated therewith as shown.
The sleeve valve 4 is provided with piston rings 10 of any suitable construction and the false head may be fitted with a mushroom delivery valve 15 as shown but any other form of valve may be employed a though as described in the aforesaid patent s ecification a delivery or discharge valve is not absolutely necessary.
What claim is 1. A high gessure compressor for ammonia or car nic acid gas comprising a cylinder with two series of gas inlets spaced around its wall and communicating with two annular chambers surrounding the cylinder, a piston reciprocating in said cylin der, a sleeve valve reci rocating between the piston and the cylin or with two series fill refer to interconnect the two of ports adapted to register with said gas inlets succesively so that firstly low pressure gas is admitted to the compressor cylinder uring the downward travel of the piston and at the end of the stroke thereof a sup plementary supply of high pressure gas is admitted to the cylinder-for the purpose set forth.
2. A high pressure compressor for ammonia or carbonic acid gas comprising a cylinder with two series of gas inlets spaced around its wall and communicating with two annular chambers surrounding the cylinder, a piston reciprocating in said cylinder, a sleeve valve reciprocating between the piston and the cylinder with two series of ports adapted to register with said gas inlets successively and means for interconnecting the two chambers adjacent to the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWIN PRESTAGE.
of ports adapted to register with said gas inlets succesively so that firstly low pressure gas is admitted to the compressor cylinder uring the downward travel of the piston and at the end of the stroke thereof a supplementary supply of high pressure gas is admitted to the cylinder for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
