To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. BISSELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot for Fender, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a rear View of a metallic footpiece, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line a: a; of Fig. 1.

My invention relates to the construction of a metallic foot-piece for fenders or fire-guards, coal-boxes, shovel-racks, and similar articles; and it consists in a metallic foot-piece,provided with a cup-shaped socket for the reception of a ball of rubber or similar material, and a circle or similar device for securing the ball in the cup-shaped socket.

Metal fireguards, coal-boxes, &c., as heretofore constructed, have been provided with metal feet, resting directly upon the hearth, which, if ofmarble, ornamental tile, or similar material, was liable to become scratched or disfigured by reason of the dragging or rubbing of the metallic feet.

The object of the present invention is to overcome these objections by providing a foot, the point of contact of which with the hearth is protected by some substance which will not mar the hearth.

The substance which I prefer to employ for this purpose is india-rubber, a ball of which, or of similar material, I secure to a metallic foot in the following manner:

A represents the metallic foot, provided at a, with a cup-shaped socket, which may be cast or formed with foot A, or may be cast separately, and secured to the foot-piece by riveting, or in any other well-known way. It is formed with lugs or projections a for the reception of screws (0 which pass through similar lugs b on the circle b or it may be provided with a thread corresponding to a thread on the circle I), in which case the circle I) will be similar to a nut. O is a ball of rubber or other suitable material, held within the cupshaped socket a by means of the circle-piece b, said ball projecting beyond the circle, as at 0, so as to keep the metal from contact with the surface on which the fender, coal-box, or shovelrack may be placed. The metallic foot will of course be of a form agreeing with the article upon which itis attached, but the manner shown of paddingis that preferred by me.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The combination, in a foot for fenders, coalboxes, &c.,oi'the socket to, ball 0, of rubber, or similar material, and ring or circle-piece b, substantially as specified.
