GEORGE HARTJE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, AND FREDERICK HARTJE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHAWL-'PINS AND CLAMPS.
Spec'ication forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,413, dated March 30, 1875 application filed February/.17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE HARTJE, of Newark, New Jersey, and FREDERICK HARTJE, of the city of New York and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a combination of Shawl- Pin and Clam p for napkins, Svc., and we do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forln a part ot' this specification This invention consists in combining with an ordinary shawl-pin a clutch or clamp to be used in securing a napkin to `the dress while eating, obviating the necessity ot' tucking the napkin in around the neck and the annoyance of its becoming loose and dropping Off.
The end of the shank ot' the pin is curved outward, as shown at a, and may be notched for better security, and an arm, b, of any suitable spring metal is secured at the back end of said sha-nk so that the opposite end of said arm will engage with the curved end of the shank, as shown. A suitable ring, c, encir cles the said shank and arm, which, being pushed forward when the napkin is inserted, forces the ends of the arm and shank together, and secures the napkin therein. The pin is then inserted in the dress wherever desired. In order to prevent the napkin from becoming loose accidentally the shank or the arin may be grooved, as shown at d, to prevent the ring c from slipping.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with a shawl-pin, constructed as described and shown, the arm b and ring c, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention we affix hereto our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. HARTJ E. FREDERICK HARTJE. Witnesses:
