TONGUE-SPATULA ATTACHMENT FOR MOUTH SPECULA.
Application filed March 1, 1926.
This invention relates to an attachment for mouth-specula or mouth-gags and has for one of its objects to allow the adjustment of the tongue-spatula in any direction to move the tongue and keep it out of the way in operations about the throat or larynx.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adjusting means for a tongue-spatula so the tongue spatula can be moved from one side to the other and placed on a slanting or a vertical position to draw the side of the tongue away from the side of the throat in which a tonsil is to be removed.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereafter fully described and claimed, which are an improvement over my application No. 39,249, filed June 24,
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like reference characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages, and the right is therefore reserved for making all the changes and modifications which will fairly fall within the scope of the invention and claims made therefor.
Referring to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention.
Fig. 2, is a side view of the invention attached to a mouth-speculum, showing the mouth-speculum open and in section.
Fig. 3, is a vertical elevation of adjusting r bolt or pedestal.
4, is a plan View of jaws 4;.
5, is a plan view of cap 8.
6, is a plan view of a tongue-spatula. invention comprises the following 1* g. Flg. Fig. The
parts in combination with a mouth-speculum of any of the standard makes, in the drawing I have used one of the common shapes as an illustration.
The reference character 1 denotes upper Serial No. 91,429.
notch and 1' lower notch of a mouth-speculum. 2 denotes a bracket or support the upper end thereof being secured by solder or other means to one of the notches of the mouth-speculum. I
The reference character 4 denotes a clamp secured to the bracket 2. The clamp has a vertical hole 25 therein through which passes a pedestal 6. The outer end of clamp 4 is cut through to hole 25 to form aws 26 and 27. Each of said jaws has a hole therein in which is placed a thumb screw 5 having a thread thereon which is placed on a thread 23 in one of the jaws to draw said jaws toether for holding the pedestal firmly within t he hole 25.
On the upper end of the pedestal 6 is placed a ball 7 which is pivotally secured thereon by a cap screw 8 having notches 8' therein.
Projecting from the ball 7 is an arm 9 having a collar 10 thereon to which is secured a guide plate 11. The sides of the plate 11 being bent in such a manner to form grooves or hook flanges 22 for a tonguespatula 14 to be operated therein between. Placed in one of the grooves is a spring 30 to hold the tongue-spatula firmly within the grooves when being used.
A thumb screw 15 is placed in the lower end of pedestal 6 and is drawn therein by thread thereon and by a thread within a hole lengthwise of said pedestal. On upper end of thumb screw 15 is a point 16 which is tempered and sticks into the ball 7 by the turning of the thumb screw 15 into the pedestal to hold the ball locked in position.
Having described the parts of my invention I will now illustrate the operation of the same.
In Fig. 2, the invention is shown as applied to a mouth. The jaws A and A of mouth-speculum are opened by pressing handles B and B together. The handles are held together by a catch C having notches thereon which catch on the handle B and are held in place by a spring D.
To close the jaws A and A the catch C is moved back drawing the notches off the handle B and allowing the catch to be moved through the slot E thus spreading the handles and compressing the jaws to remove them from the mouth.
After the mouth-speculum is placed into the mouth with notch 1 on upper teeth and notch 1 on lower teeth with aws A. and A on outside of face and the handles B and B at side of lace with the support 2 on outside of mouth and. in front of chin. The tonguespatula is now placed in the grooves 22 and the invention is now ready for use. All parts are on the outside of the month except the inner end of tongue-spatula.
On tongue-spatula are notches 17 to al low the tongue-spatula to be placed within the grooves 22. The tongue-spatula being wider than thenotches it will remain within the plate 1.1 by fitting within the grooves 22.
To adjust; tongue-spatula to any desired angle: The notches 8 in the cap 8 allows the arm 10 to enter therein so the tongue-spatula can be tipped at a right angle or to the necessary degree of slant to the tonguespatula.
If the right tonsil is to be removed the tongue-spatula is moved in the direction of dotted lines 19, and it it be the left tonsil the tongue-spatula is moved in the direction of the dotted lines 18.
It must be understood that thumb screw 15 must be loosened before any of the above movements can be accomplished and then tightened to hold the ball in place.
In the event that the tongue-spatula is too high thumb screw 5 is loosened and pedestal 6moved downward and if too low it is moved upward and the thumb screw tightened to hold the pedestal firmly.
This invention has improvements over my former application Serial No. 39,249, filed June 24, 1925.
'hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A tongue-spatula support in combination with a ll'lOtltll-SPGOLlllllll and a tongue spatula, comprising a support the upper end thereof being secured to said mouth-speculum, a clamp secured to said support, a pedestal supported by said clamp and slidably adjustable therein, said pedestal having a ball on the upper end thereof and pivotally secured thereon by a cap nut, said ball having an arm projecting therefrom, a. plate having hooked flanges at the side edges thereof, a tonguespatula slidably placed within said flanges, means in said cap to allow said arm to be n'ioved to a. right angle and means tor holding said tongue-spatula lirmly in said grooves all substantially as set forth.
2. A tongue-spatula support in combination with a. mouth-speciilum and a tonguespa-tula, comprising a supporting member the upper end thereof being secured to said mouth-specuhun, a clamp secured to said sup porting member, a pedestal slidably placed within said clamp, means for holding said pedestal firmly within said clamp, said pedestal having an adjusting ball pivotally mounted. thereon a cap having notches therein for holding said ball thereon said pedestal, means on said ball for supporting a tonguespatula, said tongue spatula having notches therein to lit in said means on said ball, means in said pedestal for locking said ball in the desired position, all substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof. I afiix my signature.
ERNEST D. HAMMOND.
