DIE MECHANISM.
. App1iceition mm Decem'ber My invention resides in an improved die mechanismaflapted to the formation of holl0w extensions of vbodies of sheet material. The mechanism of my invention .enables 3 the fornriation of such. "extensions without cracks Q1 fissures in the product. The mechanism of myinvention ineludes male and femle members and a spring yieldingly pressing one cf the die me mbers toward .u the other wit-h a pressure sufficierit to exert drawing engagement of the die members upn the 'maiterialinterposed therebetween..
My invention is of partic ular ser vice in i the formation of tubular or cyli ndrical prol5 jections, and when thus employed the male member is in the form of'a cylindrical punch having a conical wo rking end and the female' me mben is. pr0vided with a conical cavity conformixig-inshape to the conical end 2 of the punch.
Hitherto there was no tendency -te draw the-sheet materisil as the punch descended with themesult that fissuies were liabl e to form at the bases of the extension. T
By grippingthe work*between the two die members the sheet material is drawn as the die operates' thereon to relieve the fissure forming tendency.
The invention will be more fully explained lgy reference to the accompanyin drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view partiallly in sectio n sind partially in elevation of't-h pre-- fernad forinof inechani sm the diemembers being in Sepa1"ated relation; Fig 2 illustrateS the punchand femalemember' of Ehe die inthe early stage of an operation; ]3 ig..
' 3 illustrates alafer stage in the -peration;
-Fig 4. illustrates the final stage in the Ope'ration; und Fig'.f5 is aperspectix* view illustrating the resulting p1oduci Lik6 parts 'are.ind'czited by similar, chata'eters et reference throughout the different ;figres.
The malejmember 1 is shown in the form ef a cylindricalpunch having a tapering 01' conical working end 2. The feinale membei 3 is alsio preferably, thogh not ne cessarily, cylindrical. This female member is formed with a tapeving .0r conical ca"vit '5 that confdrms in shape to the conical punc1 end 2. 'The1eis asupport 15 for the sheet inaterial (illustrated at 6) that is to be'operated updh. This support is fo'rmed with a cylixidrical opening 7 which is of a diamet er conf0rming to the eXt6rnal diameter of 10, 1923. Selial mi. 879,79'6.
the tub'ular extension 8 (Fig. 5) that is t lie forn'1ed. The pun'ch 1 conforms in size 10 the bore 0f the tubular extension 8. The annular c learance between the punch 1 and suppoxt 5 is substantially equal to the thickness of the sheet metal from Which said tubular extension is forined. Both die members are adapted t0' reciprocate in this open'- ing in performiflg their functioi1. .The die member 3 carri'es vertical ins 9 which project dewnwardly froni t 1e base thereof, thes e pins sliding in vertical holes formed in the mounting 10for the support 5. These pins bea1 upon a. metal pl ai;e 11 which bezirs upon the top end of a spring cushioi1 12 7 which is preferably a body of rubber. This body of rubber is held in assembly With the plate 11 by means of the plate 13 engaging the bottorn spring cushion, a holt 14 sci ewecl in the part 10, and a nut 15 up01'1 the lowerend of the holt, this nut clamping the cushi0n 12 between the plates 11 and 13. As illustrated, ehe members of the die are vertically a1iang@d, the female 'member 3 and its supporting cushion 12 heilig lower most. This cushion exerts suflieient pres-= sure to clamp' the sheet metal 6, er other. sheet material, between"the punch and fefnale membe'r with suificient force to cause i sired length when thismuch of-the inetal is added to by the metal drawn from1;he surrounding body of the sheet material. \Zhile I have herein shown and particularly described v the preferred embodiment of 1ny invention I de not wish to be limited t the preeise details of construction sho'wn,
as changes may'readilybe made Without departing from the spitit of my invention; but' having thus described my' inVen'tion, I cl'aim as new and desire t.secnre by Letters Batent the fqllowingz" Die mechanism for shapin'g sheet material including a support f01 the sheet ma-' -terial; a male die member in the form of a punch npon the exterior of sa1deupp'ort! a:nd having a tapering working end; a fenmle die, men1ber having a tapering cavity receiving the tapering end of the punch and normally received in, an opening in said supp0rt, und in which opening both die rhem bers are reciprocable, und between which and the punch member a cleaxance, substantially equal to the thickness of theysheet I-nmteriztlbeing Op'erated upon, intervenes 150 10 recewe the sheet mater1al bemg worked upon; md means for rnaintaining clamping engagement of said die members with the sheet material after he initial punching operation, to enable the sheet material 150 be drawn by the die members into said c1earance as said die members move together.
In wifness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 14th day 0f March A. D. 1923.
MORRIS SCHWARTZ.
