Be it known that I, FREDERICK (loans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyoming, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Flanged Heads or Ends for Paper or Pulp Containers,of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce an improved machine for making paper flanged heads or ends for paper or pulp containers, the present machine referring to the making of that style of head or end in which the edge is turnedup at right angles to the remainder of the head to form a rim or flange in which the body of the container is received.
This and other objects are attained in the machine herein set forth My invention consists in the parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed- In the drawings:

In the embodiment of my inventlon as illustrated, and which shows a preferred construction, bracket 4:, which supports the machine from a suitable head or support, is provided with a reciprocally mounted sleeve 5 which has an out-turned annular flange 6. A collar 7 is screw threaded onto the upper end of the sleeve to limit its motion, and a spring 8 which is connected at its lower end to the flange 6 and at its upper end to the bracket 4:, acts to hold the sleeve 5 to the upper limit of its travel. This flange has depending from it a pressure plate 9 which is spaced from the flange by a series of connecting spacing lugs 10. Between the lugs tongues 11 of a series of substantially triangular reciprocally mounted pressure blocks 12 are located. The blocks are held in inward retracted position by a series of springs 13 which are located in holes 14 drilled at angles into blocks 12 and abut screw plugs 15 in flange 6. of tongues 11 of blocks 12 are inclined for co- 17 located reciprocally within sleeve 5. This I plunger is held in lifted position by spring 18 which has bearing upon pressure plate 9 and is held in position thereon by lug 19 centrally located thereon. The cooperating portion of the mechanism constituting my invention consists of the female die comprismg shell 20 having bottom 21 against which rest a series of springs 22 which act to support movable bottom 23 yieldingly.
In the operation ofthe mechanism above described I place a container head blank 24: in position on shell 20. Themovable portion of the machine, consisting of plate 9, blocks 12, sleeve 5 and plunger 17 are then moved down into contact with blank 24. Pressure is then brought to bear upon collar 7 by pressure member 25, which operates to force blank 2% into engagement with movable bottom 23, thus fixing it against relative movement during the following operations. Then the movement of the plate 9 is continued by pressure of member 25 the edge of blank 24 is forced upwardly by the rounded inner edge of shell 20 to form an annular flange or rim 26, such as shown in Fig. 3. WVhen the limit of movement of bottom 23 has been reached, the pressure on the head is maintained by member 25 and blocks 12 are then caused to move outwardly in radial directions against the annular flange by means of plunger 171. Then the plunger is forced downwardly as by members 27, against the pressure of spring 18, its tapered end 16 is brought into sliding cooperation with the correspondingly inclined inner ends or tongues 11 of blocks 17 permits blocks 12 to be returned to re-' tracted position by springs 13. Pressure is now released from member 25 by a lever or other means (not shown), thus allowing spring 8 to raise sleeve 5 and pressure plate 9 and permitting bottom 23 to lift the formed container head out of shell 20 under llO action of springs 22. The mechanism is then in condition for repetition of the operation above described.
While I have shown and described a particular construction and arrangement, it will be apparent that my invention is capable of some modification Without departing from its scope or spirit, and While I have shown the device as adapted to form container heads or ends, it may also be used for forming flanges on various other articles. Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
In a flanged head forming machine, a
reciprocally mounted sleeve having a pres sure plate thereon, a series of pressure blocks upon said presssure plate having thelr outer faces shaped to conform to the shape of a head to be formed and having their inner ends tapered, a plunger Within the sleeve having its end in engagement with the'inner ends of the pressure blocks and tapering for cooperation therewith, means for receiv-a ing the blank of 'a' container head to be formed and for permitting the entrance of the pressure plate and blocks for forming the blank into a flanged container head therein, said plunger having a recess or chamber and'said plate having a lug centrally located thereon, a spring mounted on said-lug and extending into said recess for Withdrawing said plunger, means for returning the pressure blocks to retracted positionand means for Withdrawing the pressure plate from head formin position. i
