A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
ATTACHMENT FOB ENVELOPE BLANKER PRINTING MACHINES.
Application filed July 28,
This invention relates to attachments for envelope blanker printing machines and has for one of its objects to provide a device for automatically jogging the envelope blanks to properly line them up preparatory to their being folded and formed for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ogging attachmentrwhich may be readily and quickly placed upon machines H already in use, and which may be incorporated with equal facility in new machines.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the class described which is readily adjustable to accomniodate envelopes of different sizes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment having an adjust ment whereby the length of the jogging movement may be readily controlled.
still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and more eiiicient in use than those which have been heretofore proposed.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views;
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a standard Harris blanker printing machine with the present invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the plane indicated by the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
F 3 is an inverted plan view of a portion of the parts shown in Figs. 1. and 2, illustrating the jogging attachment in place beneath the platform or table of the envelope machine; and,
l? 4. is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, on an enlarged scale, of one of the ogging members.
In the said drawings the numeral 5 designates the framework of a standard Harris blanker printing machine, which machine includes a drum 6, against which presses a 1922. Serial No. 578,243.
plurality of guiding and feeding rollers T which are adapted to feed envelope blanks downwardly to a plurality of guiding rods or fingers 8 and 9, suitably supported by posts 10 and 11, respectively, carried by a substantially horizontal platform or table 12.
The parts so far described are all of standard and well known construction, and need not be described in detail since they may be of any preferred form and constitutes no especial part of the present invention.
The jogging attachment proper comprises a plurality of vertically extending posts or rods '15, which extend. upwardly through the angularly disposed slots 16 provided in the table or platform 12, see Figs. 1 and 4. The said posts or rods are provided below the said table with the horizontal guiding and supporting rods 17, which may be secured to the said posts 15 by means of the thumb screws 18 and which are slidably mounted in guide members 19, rigidly carried by the under surface of the said table or platform Secured to the lower ends of the posts 15, as by the pivotal connection 20, are the actuating rods or bars 21, which may be clamped to the said connection 20 by means of thumb screws 22. The posts 15 are preferably arranged in the form of a parallelogram and at the approximate center thereof, beneath the table or platform 27, there is provided a rocking disc 23 pivotally secured to the said table 12, as by the stud 2 1. The said disc 23 is provided with a plurality of crank or wrist pins 25 to which the free ends of the actuating rods 21 are connected,
preferably in pairs, as clearly shown in Fig.
The said disc 23 is provided with an extension or ear 26 to which is pivoted one end of an actuating rod 27, the other end of which is pivotally connected, as at 28, to an arm 29, carried by a rock shaft 30, journalled in the frame 5 of the machine. The said arm 29' is preferably slotted as at 31 to engage the pivotal connection 28, whereby the throw or movement of the connecting rod 27, and consequently of the jogging posts 15, may be adjusted to accommodate different sizes of envelopes.
The shaft may be driven by any suitable connection with a rotating or oscillating part of the machine 5.
Inoperation the envelopes are fed down between the drum 6 and the rollers 7 to the guiding fingers 8 and 9, and from the said fingers they pass to the platform 12 between the upright posts 15. The edges of the envelope blanks engage the sides of the said posts 15, as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the said posts are reciprocated in their slots 16 through the medium of the oscillating disc 23 and its connections to cause the pile of blanks to be vibrated to bring their edges into accurate alignment.
The posts 15 may be adjusted relative to the actuating rods 21 through the medium of the thumb screws 22 to accommodate different sized envelopes, and the amount of vibration or reciprocation iniparted to the said posts may be readily controlled by shifting'the pivotal connection 28 to different positions within the slot 31 of tne arm 29. Of course the further the said connection is located from the rock shatt 31, the greater will be the motion transmitted to the connecting rod 27, and vice versa.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and
therefore it is not Wished to be limited to the above disclosure exceptas may be required by the claims.
lVhat is claimed is: l. The combination with an envelope blanking machine having a drum and a receiving table provided with a plurality of spaced slots arranged in oppositely disposed acutely converging pairs, of a plurality of slidable posts carried by said table, projecting through said slots and adapted to receive envelope blanks from said drum between them; and 1neans for reciprocating said posts in said slots to cause them to engage the edges of said blanks at an angle to align the same.
2. In a device or" the class described, a support provided with a plurality of spaced slots arranged in oppositely disposed acutely converging pairs; a plurality of spaced posts slidably carried by said support in said slots, and adapted to receive a pile of envelope blanks between them; an oscillat ing disc member carried by said support; a pair of diametrically opposed wrist pins carried by said oscillating member; connections between each of said wrist pins carrier. by said oscillating member and the pair of posts mounted in the adjacent acutely converging pair of slots for-reciprocating the latter to cause them to engage the ed es of said blanks at an acute angle to align the same; and means for oscillating said memher.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.
