LEGGING.
Application filed December 12, 1925. Serial No. 75,076.
' This invention relates to leg and foot coverings and more particularly to a novel means for protecting the legs and ankles against cold in the winter.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a form fitting leg and ankle covering which not only forms means for protecting the wearer against cold, but which also adds to the appearance of the wearer and which may be of any suitable design, shade or color to conform to the particular dress of the person wearing the same, thereby pleasing the taste of the most fastidious person dressing to the mode.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form fitting leg and ankle covering embodying a novel ankle fiap for engaging about the lower end of the leg covering for holding the said covering snugly about the upper portion of the shoe, pump or the like and the ankle of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for associating the ankle flap with the leg covering, thereby providing a free opening for the insertion of the foot in order that the entire covering can be readily associated with the leg and the foot in an expeditious manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel leg and ankle covering of a neat and highly attractive appearance which can be worn with a maximum amount of comfort. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings: v
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved leg and ankle covering showing the same in use,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the improved leg and ankle covering,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the leg and ankle covering showing the appearance thereof before it is fitted to the wearer,
I Figure 4: is a plan view of one of the blanks utilized for the covering,
Figure 5 is the companion blank therefor, v
Figure 6 is a view of the blank of one form of the tongue which can be used in the. leg covering,
Figure 7 is a view ankle flap,
of the blank of the Figure 8 is a fragmentary side elevation of the novel covering showing the ankle flap,
Figure 9 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through the leg portion of the covering illustrating the means for connecting the blanks from which the leg portion of the covering is formed,
I Figure 10 is a detail view illustrating the formation of covering for mens wear.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved leg and ankle covering which can be formed of any desired material, preferably of a fiexible nature, so as to permit the covering to form a glove fit on the wearer.
lhe material can be of any desired shade, so as to harmonize with the general dress of the wearer and if desiredthe covering can be made of leather or cloth of the desired texture. I v
The novel leg and ankle covering A includes the leg portion 10, which is shaped to snugly fit the calf of the wearer and the lower end thereof its provided with depending extensions 11 and 12, which are adapted to fit over the ankle and engage the shoe or pump of the wearer. Referring to Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing, it is preferred to construct the leg portion from a pair of companion blanks 13 and 14, which are of course suitably shaped to conform to the calf and ankle of different sizes of persons. The rear edges of the blanks 13 and 14 are connected together in any desired way, such as by stitching and the like and it is to be noted, by referring to Figure 9 that the longitudinal rear edges of the blanks are folded back upon themselves as at 15 so as to eliminate ragged edges and permit the leg covering to give a finished appearance. If preferred the leg covering can be provided with a suitable lining 16 of felt or the like, or the lining can vbe entirely dispensed with without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is preferred to connect the front longitudinal edges of the leg portion 10 by a suitable tongue 17, which also can be of any desired character. As, shown in the drawings I have illustrated a tongue of the bellows type in which the.
longitudinal edges thereof are sewed to the front longitudinal edges of the leg portion 10 and the extensions 11 and 12. It is to be clearly understood however, that different kinds of tongues can be used, such as tongues made of elastic webbing and tongues only secured to one longitudinal edge of the covering.
The free longitudinal edges of the covering are adapted to be detachably connected together in any way, such as by the use of any preferred type of fasteners, lacings or the like.
Qne form of means for connecting the free edges of the covering together has been shown in the drawings and it is to be noted that-the same includes the spaced shoe hooks 18 which are connected to the outer face of the leg covering adjacent to one longitudinal edge of the said'leg covering. The other side of the leg covering is provided with pairs of spaced eyes 19 through which is threaded an elastic cord or lace 20. This lace is adapted to be drawn over the hooks as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, which will bring the longitudinal edges of the covering together and hold the entire covering snugly about the leg ofthe wearer.
One of the important features of the invention is the novel ankle flap 21, which is utilized for the dual purpose of holding the extensions 11 and 12 snugly about the shoe or pump and to protect the shoe and gen erally enhance the appearance of the device. The blank for the ankle flap is clearly shown in Figure 7 of the drawings and the same is gradually reduced toward its oppositeends as clearly shown in that figure. One end of the flap is provided with a foot strap 22, while the other end can be provided with one or more button holes 23.
This ankle flap is partially connected to one side of the leg portion 10 preferably to the ankle extension 11, by suitable stitches 24, but the flap is left free, so as to permit the same to be readily swung over or away fromthe extension 12. in purchasing a pair of the improved leg and ankle covering, it is incumbent upon the salesman to snugly fit the person, who is to wear the same, so as to carry out the idea of providing a dressy leg and ankle covering. One end of the foot strap 22 is left free, and the strap is adjusted under-the shoe to the desired size of the person purchasing the same after which the strap can be clamped in place by a suitable fastener of any preferred type. The free end of the ankle flap having the button holes 23 formed therein is then brought over the extensions 11 and 12 and a button 25 is then secured Iinplace at the desired point, so that the flap .can be buttoned 'thereover and held in correct position. lVhile button and button 'holes have been shown, snap fasteners can be substituted therefor if preferred.
It is obvious from the foregoing, :that a novel leg and ankle covering has been'prothat this flap is to be made in different styles and shapes to conform to thestyle of the toe and vamp of the shoe with which the covering is to be worn.
While as is evident, the eovering'has been especially designed for women who wear thin stockings, the same can also be worn by men with equal advantage and in Figure 10 I have shown the device adapted for mens wear. It is to be noted that the same includes all of the essential features of the invention as described above with the exception of the leg portion indicated by the reference character 30 which extends only slightly above the ankle.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but:
iVh-at I claim as new is:
1. A legging including a form fitting body having an ankle extension, the ankle extension being provided with a foot receiving opening for facilitating the placing of the device upon the wearer, and a flap secured at a point on the ankle extension having its ends free to be extended around the foot of th .wearer.
2. A leg and ankle covering comprising a form fitting body :for snugly embracing the leg, side ankle extensions formed on the body, a form fitting flap for the front of the extensions, means permanentlysecuring the flap at one side to one extension and means detachably connecting the flap at the other side to the other extension.
8. A leg and ankle covering including a form fitting body for snugly embracing the leg of the wearer, side ankle extensions formed on the body, a form fitting flap for engaging the front portion or extensions, means securing the flap at one side adjacent to the front of one extension, means detachably connectingthe otherside-of the flap to the other extension, and a foot strap'carried by one'side of the flap for connection with the ankle extension at a point remote from the flap carrying said strap.
4. A leg and ankle coveringcomprising a form fitting body acapted to snugly embracethe leg, side ankle extensions formed on the body, a tongue for the front of the body and said extensions, means for connecting the longitudinal edges of the extensions and body together and a form fitting vamp flap for snugly engaging over said "exten- SlOIlS.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
