BIT HOLDER.
Application filed June 10, 1924. Serial No. 719,205.
This invention relates to an improved bit holder, and I aim primarily to provide a new structure of this class which is such in construction that the bit can be inserted and removed in comparatively limited spaces in which devices of this class are necessarily used.
Another aim is to provide a device of this class wherein the bit is longitudinally adjustable to permit the use thereof even after the point of the cutting blade is broken by extending the bit outwardly.
More specifically speaking, what I aim to do is to provide a device of this class whereway and the holder is provided with a r0- tary key which is adapted to be turned into the keyway for retaining the bit in place, this arrangement absolutely insuring against ii) lost motion of the bit and obviating the necessity of using comparatively large wrenches such as are ordinarily required in removing and inserting the common type of bit now in use.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an improved bit and holder therefor constructed in accordance with. the present invention.
- Figure 2 is a similar view showing the holder in section to disclose means more clearly.
Figure 3 is'a vertical section taken in substantially right angles to Figure 2.
the retaining -1 Referring now to the drawings more in dewhat may be conveniently termed keyways.
The body 1 opposite the upper keyway is formed with a transverse hole extending therethrough and a pin 6 is rotatably mountin the bit is formed with a groove or key point 4. In accordance ed in this hole. This pin constitutes a retaining key. On its opposite ends the key or pin is provided with heads 7 and 8 re spectively which serve to retain it in place. The last named head is enlarged and flat faced as shown to permit it to be engaged by a small wrench for turning if found necessary. In most instances however the use of the wrench is entirely unnecessary, for the pin can be rotated by hand. Directing attention to Figure 3 it will be observed that the pin or key is formed intermediate its ends with an elongated recess 9 which when turned to face the adjacent edge of the shank 3, serves to permit removal of the entire bit. In order to retain the bit in place, the key is turned so that the solid portion opposite the recessed part 9 is received in one or the other of the keyway As is usual, the body is provided with common attaching apertured cars 10.
From the foregoing description and drawings it will be obvious that when the bit is in the holder and it is desired to retain it in place, the solid intermediate portion of the rotary key is turned into the keyway, thus preventing longitudinal slippage of the bit. If, for any reason it is desired to remove the bit, the key is turned so as to dispose the central recessed portion 9 of the key opposite the vertical edge of the shank. The key then does not interfere with removal or insertion of the tool. It is to be observed also that, as before stated, the key can be received in either one of the keyways in the shank, thus permitting longitudinal extension or adjustment of the tool.
It is thought that the foregoing description and drawing will suflice to enable the reader to obtain .a clear comprehension of the invention and manner of using the same. For this reason, a more lengthy description is thought entirely unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A bit holder of the class described comprising a body provided with a central polygonal passage extending entirely therethrough and provided on one side of said passage with an opening extended through the body at a right angle to said passage,
one side of said opening being in communication with said passage, said body being provided with apertured attaching cars, a tool having a polygonal shank slidably received in said passage, said shank being prorided in one vertical edge with transverse passage provided with a notch, whereby to longitudinally spaced grooves for lQCGPtLOl'l permit the bolt ;to be turned to pernna re- Or a bolt, a rotary locknig bolt extend ng moval and insertion oithe tool. 10
through one of said openings and provided In testimony whereof I aflix my signaon one end with a head and having its opture. poslte end upset to maintain it in place, said bolt having that portion opposite said JAKE DAVIS.
