My invention relates to dispensing devices aud particularly to devices 'lor dispensing elongated articles which are substantially alike in length and thickness or diameter such, for example, as talking machine styli or needles, whereby single article is separated or selected iiroin a quantity ot lil: articles loosely stored in a suitable container, and is automatically delivered 'from said container to the user as occasion ior use ot one of said devices may arise.
rlhe objects oit my invention are to provide a device which may be permanently attached to and form a part of a substantial structure, as lor instance a talking machine cabinet, and which is adapted to contain a considerable stoclr or store .ot sinall loose elongated articles, such as talking machine styli; to provide a device which, although so permanently secured to an object, provides means whereby the container its-eli may be readily separated from a lixed part of thek dispensing device and when removed may be replenished with a fresh stock or supply of loose articles to be dispensed thereby; to provide a dispensing device by means ot which small articles, such as styli or needles, may be automatically discharged one at a time to a position on a holder, receiver or other suitable receptacle, from which it may be readily picked up; to provide a small dispensing device which will not detract from, but on the other hand will improve the appearance of the whole device on which the same may loe mounted; to provide a stylus dispensing device which is so easily operated and which so conveniently dispenses or discharges styli that the user i" a talking machine will prefer to use the same rather than to permit loose styli to remain scattered over the top ot a talking machine; to provide a device which will deliver an article the ends ot' which are of different weight with a selected end, as for instance the lighter or smaller end, always pointing in the same direction; and to provide a device which will deliver the articles contained therein one at a time until the supply therein is completely exhausted.

if, however, the tongue or lip S1 be inade as long as the slot 29, the device will dispense a stylus for every operation, but the direction in which the sharp end points will not be uniform. lt will deliver a stylus for every operation irrespective of the .direction in which the sharpened end is pointed or directed. Such a construction is shown in the inodiiied form illustrated in Figs. 9 to 15.
To operate the device shown in Figs. 1 to 8, and starting with the container empty, the operator removes the nut 1l) and, grasping the kuurled flange 22, \\.ithdraws the container 15 froin the outer ineniber (i. He then gives the removable head 21 a slight turn t free the pin 23 freni the bayonet slot 24, whereupon the head 21 may be ren'ioved. He then places within the container a quantity of loose styli, replaces the head 21 in the open end of the container, inserts the container in the outer' ineniber (i with the stein 17 passing through the journal S), and threads the nut 19 on to and over the threaded end 1S on the stein 17. He then grasps the handle and turns the container' 15 in an anti-clockwise direction, preli'erahlv un? til the pin 26 engages the stop 2d at tlie end of the slot 14. rlfhis position is shown in Fig. 1. ln coming to this position the lip 0r tongue 31 will have passed through the bottoni of the inass of needles in the con tainer and agitated them, thus tending to cause the needlesV to corne tol positions in which their axes are parallel'to each other and to the axis upon which rotates the con tainer 15. The operator next turns the handle clockwise, until the pin 26 engages the stop 27 at the other end of the slot 14. ,This position is shown in Fig. During this movement of the container, the lip or tongue 31 again sweeps through the supply of loose styli resting on the bottom of the container, but in opposite direction and again agitates the inass of styli. During this movement one at least of the styli will be caught by the lip 31, and will lie in the slot resting against the cylindrical surface of the nieinber 6 and against the forwardly inclined surface of the lip or tongue 31. rlhis operation constitutes a selection of one. stylus, a withdrawal of itfrorn the inass of Styli, and a carrying of it upwardly towards th-e shoulder 11 of the member 6. Before the lip or tongue 31 shall reach the position shown in Fig. 3, any stylus, other than the one lying against the inclined face of the lip or tongue 31, will roll off and fall to the bottoni of the said container. If now the heavy end of the stylus so selected by the tongue or lip 31 rests on the tongue or lip 31, said stylus will remain there until the upper surfaceV of the tongue or lip 31 is flush with the beveled edge 11 or shoulder of the slot 10, but when said last-inentioned position is reached, the stylus will roll by gravity over saidedge 0r shoulder 11 and ldown on to the receiver said tongue or lip reaches the lower edge 11 of the slot 10 (as shown in Fig. 8), and no CII ill)

stylus will bc delivered or dispensged by the device upon that operation. lllhen this occurs, the operation above described must be repeated until a stylus is caught by the lip 31 with its point lying over 'the eut away portion ot' the lip 31, whereupon such stylus will be delivered to the receiver.
rllhe outer member G, in the modification above described, is shown as completely cylindrical. But this is not necessary. But substantially the lower haltl of the said meniber should be cylindrical to fit smoothly` against the outer surface o'l the contr-.inerwhich adjacent the slot 29 therein, to close the said slot .29 until the stylus is raised by the tongue 31 to a position where it may be delivered to the receiver, namely, when the tongue 31 is flush with the shoulder 11. But above theshoulder 11, the outer member i3 may be et any suitable shape, or the outer member may not extend aboi-:e sain shoulder 11 at all. ln the modilication shown in Figs. 9 to 15, the outer inenibe" t3 is in tact arc-shaped, and does not cover substantially the upper hallZ oi the container. 1n this modified construction, the legs are connected directly to the outer member G, which member 6 comprises a substantially semi-cylindrical strip embracing a little more than the lower halt ot the cylindrical container 15. rlhis member t is preferably made of resilient metal and smoothly clasps 'lhe container 15 is provided with substantially the same .slot 29, and with a lip or tongue 31 similar to that previously7 described. The outer member 6 is similarly provided with the same beveled edge or shoulder 11 over which the styli are-delivered to the receiver 12, provided with an upturned end 13, all of which is substantially like the construction previously described. 'llo prevent longitudinal movement of the container 15 with respect to the outer member G, the said member G is provided on one side with an upturned lug Sil, the upper end ot which is turned inwardly to hook over the inner edge oi the flange 22 extending around the outer side of the removable head 21', which forms the closure for the open end ot the container 15. On the opposite side et the member (3' a resilient upwardly turned lug 35 which prevents movement ot the conlaincr 15 in the opposite direction.
The head 9.1 is similar to the head Q1 of the modification previously described. but the pin und bayonet slot connection between the two may be omitted. '.lhe head 21 may be merely titted into the ogen end ol the conrainer 15 and triciionallj,v contained therein. 'l`he handle Q5 may be mounted directly upon the outer cylindrical surface ot the container 15, and its engagement with the bottom 2T of the slot 14; may serve to limit the rotative movement ci" the container in its Leraar@ clockwise direction. The back et the container 15 may be, and preferably is provided 'ith a pin 2(3, and the engagement thereof with the stop 28, formed by the lug 35, will limit the rotative movement of the container in an anti-clockwise direction. As above indicated, the lip or tongue 31 in this modiiication may entend the whole length of the slot- 29 and wee* so constructed the device will deliver a stylus every time it is operated irrespective o1c ciie direction in which the sharpened end is pointed, but it is to be understood, et course, that the said lip 81 may be made ot' substantially one-halt the length shown, whereupon it will operate like the lip 31 ot thc form oit my invention first above described.
Vllhe manipulation ot' the modiiie'd Yl'orm of my invention shown in Figs. 9 to 15, inclusive is slightly different from that ontl the 'form shown in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive and first above described. -arting with the container 15 empty, and r ring particularly7 to Fig. 14, the operator will grasp the container 15 and tilt the bottom edge thereof next to the resilient linger 35 upwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 14, thus moving the Vflange on the lid 21 out from under the overhanging hook ot the lug When tilted in this position and free from the lug 33, tl e container 15 is readily litted vertically, slightly springing apart the upper ends of the resilient substantially semicircular outer member G. The operator will then remove the head or cover Q1 and put a supply or stock of loose styli, or other articles to be dispensed into the container 15 and replace the head 21. 4le will then replace the container 15 into the out-er member 6, following the saine steps as those followed by him in removing the container from the out-er meniloer 6 but in the reverse order.
lle will then grasp the handle 25 and swing it in an anti-clockwise direction, pret erably until it occupies the position shown in Fig. 9. ln this position, the stop pin 2G will bear against the stop surface 28 et the resilient lug 35. The operator will then swing the handle in the opposite direction (clockwise, when referring to Fig. 9) and the tongue or lip 31 moving through the loose styli collected on the bottom ot the container 15 will agitato and straighten out the loose stvli; :is in'eviously ret'cired to :ind will engage or select one stylus, and carry it upwardly, (as shown in. l `igs. ll and i2) until the handle 25 strikes against the stop sui'- tace 27 oi' the slot lei in the outer member (3. ln that position, the tongue 31 will be in a position shown in Fig. 12 Vflush with the slniuldcr ll on theouter casing and the stylus will roll by gravity troni the tongue 31, over the shoulder 11, on to the receiver 12, and will come to rest against the upturned end 13 thereof.
It will, of course, be understood that it may not always be necessary in turning the containers in an anti-clockwise direction to continue the moven'ient in that direction until the pin 26 ot the modilication shown in Fig. 1 actually brings up against the stop 28 or until the pin 26 ot the niodilication shown in Fig. l0 brings up against the stop 28', particularly it there be a comparatively large number ot styli within the container. The stops 28 and 28 are, however, so arranged tor convenience in operating the device and so that it there be but one stylus within the container, that the stylus will fall to the bot-tom ot' the container' when the container is swung in an anti-clockwise direction to the limit of its motion in that direction.
My invention is also adapted tor use in a continuously operated machine tor delivering styli or similar articles with the sharp or lighter end thereof always in the same direc tion, as, for instance, when it is desired to so arrange them tor packaging or for any other purpose. In Figs. 16 and 17 are shown two terms et ny v device arranged tor a conoperation.

ln either ot' the modifications, last above described, and illustrated in Figs. lil and l?, the container l5 is loaded with a large number oi styli and then the container is rotated continuously rather slowly in one direction by a belt (not shown) running around the pulley 3b or E36. '.lhe container 1G in these iuoditications is provided with av tongue or lip Ell, such as is shown in Figs. 7 and 8. As the container is rotated, this tongue 3l sweeps through Yhe quantity oi styli resting on the bottom ot the container, agitates the contents thereof, and catching one stylus lifts it toward the receiver 12. It a stylus is caught on the lip 3l rests with the heavy cud z-igainst the lip 3l, as shown in .liigz 7, then when the lip comes into registration with the slot 'll in the outer container, a stylus will roll by gravity out through the slot l0 over the edge ll and come to a rest on the receiver l2. It, however, a stylus caught by the lip 3l is so positioned with respect thereto that the lighter end is over the lip 3l as shown inltig. 8, then that stylus will tall trom the lip 3l bet'ore the said lip comes into registration with the edge or shoulder ll ot the rllhis pulley may be seslot l0. ln this way, and iu the ment shown in Figs. lo and l?, one stylus will be delivered forevery revolution ot' the vcarrier l5 provided the stylus is Supported on the lip 3l in the manner shown in Fig. 7.
lt is to be understood that in connection with the modilication shown in Figs. lo and li", wherein the device might be used -tor other purposes than delivering styli for use in connection with the operation ot a talking machine, the container l5 might be nrovided with a plurality ot slots 29 and inwardly projecting tongues 3 suitably spaced from each other and extending co1npletely around the surface ot the vinner container so that as each lip 3l comes into registration with the shoulder ll of the outer member 6, it will deliver' a stylus provided the heavy end thereof is resting upon the lip 3l.
lli/*hen a device en'ibodying my invention is to be used to deliver a stylus or similar article, with a selected end always on the same side of the receiver, the inside longitudinal dimensions ot the container, when closed by the removable head thereof, should be but slightly greater than the length ot the stylus, or other article to be dispensed thereby, so that the said article when lifted by the tongue or lip will be Substantially uniformly longitudinally positioned with respect to the said tongue or lip.
lli-is, o'l course, to be understood that this device is primarily for the purpose of dispensing, one at a time, styli such as are used in connection with the operation ot' talking machines, but the device is not to be construed as being limited strictly thereto, because as above described, the construction may be readily changed and adapted tor use in connection with the dispensing ot other elongated articles without departing trom the spirit and scope ot the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: Y
l. ln a dispensing device the combination oi a hollow container mounted for rotational movement and provided with a. slot disposed parallel to the axis of rotation ot said container, a stationary member having a cylindrical surface fitting against the outer surtace ot said container adjacent said slot and operative to close said slot at all times ero cept when said container is at substantially the limit ot' its rotational movement in one direction, said member being provided with a stylus receiver in alinement with the lower edge of said slot when said container' is at its said limit ot movement, a rigid tongue or lip carried by said container and projecting inwardly from the inner surface ot said con tainer and upwardly from said lower edge of said slot when said container is in said position, means to prevent the rotational movearrangement of said container above said point or position, and means to limit the rotational movement oi"A said container in the opposite direction.
2. ln a dispensing device the combination of a hollow container mounted tor rotational movement and provided `with a slot dispos-ed parallel tothe axis 'oi rotation of said container, a stationary member fitting against the outer surtace oi said container' adjacent said slot and operative to close said slot at all times except when said container is at substantially the limit oi' its rotational movement in one direction, said member' being provided with a ledge in alinement with the lower edge ot' said slot when said container is at its said limit ot' movement, a tongue or lip carried by said container and projecting inwardly trom the inner surface ot said cofitainer and upwardly trom said lower edge o'l said slot when said container is in said position, the width of said tongue being Vicient to support one only oi tile articles to be dis-- penseel, means to preventthe rotational movement of said container above said point or position, and means to limit the rotational movement of said container in the opposite direction. 3. ln a dispensing device the combination of a hollow container mounted 'tor rotational movement and provided with a slot disposed parallel to the axis of rotation ot' said container, a stationary member operative to close said slot at all times except when said container is substantially one limit oi' its rotative movement in one direction, said member being provided with a ledge in, alinement with the lower -edge ot said slot when said container is at its said limit of movement in one direction, a tongue or lip carried by said container and projectingl inwardly and upwardly irom said lower edge ot said slot when said container is at its said limit ot' movement, the length oi' said lip or tongue being substantially one-halt the length ot said article to be dispensed by said device.

6. in a device for dispensing styli and other substantially cylindrical articles, the con'ibination with a hollow casing mounted tor rotative movement about a lined axis and provided with a slot therethrough parallel to said axis, a lip extending inwardly from the lower edge ot' said slot, and a` stationary member having a cylindrical surface over which the outer surface ot said casing around said slot slides during a portion ot its rotational movement and also providing a ledge extending parallel to and substantially on the level of the axis of rotation oft said casing, the width or" said slot and lip respectively being a little greater than the diameter ot' the article to be dispensed and the length ot said lip beingl substantially one-halt ot the length or' said slot.
7. ln a device tor dispensing styli and other substantially cylindrical articles, the combination with a hollow casing mounted tor rotative movement about a fixed axis and provided with a slot therethrough parallel to said axis, a lip extending inwardly from the lower edge ot said slot, and a stationary member having a cylindrical surilace over which the outer surface of said casing around said slot slides during a portion of its rotational movement and also providing a ledge extending parallel to and substantially on the level of the axis of rotation of said casing, the lengthV ot said slot being substantially equal to the full length of the interior of said casing, the Width of said slot and lip respectively being a little greater than the diameter ot the article to be dispensed, said lip extending from one end ot said slot to a point substantially midway of the length ot said slot. y

In a device for dispensing styli and other substantially cylindrical articles, the combination with a hollow casing mounted Li L for rotative movement about a fixed axis and provided with a slot therethrough parallel to said axis, a lip extending inwardly from the lower edge or said slot, and a stationary member having a cylindrical surface over which the outer surface of said casing around said slot slides during a portion or' its rotational movement and also providing a ledge extending parallel to and substantiaily on the level oi the axis of rotation oi said casing, said lip extending from one end of said slot to a point substantially midway or the length of said slot.

13. in a device for dispensing styli and other substantially cylindrical objects, the combination ot a hollow rotatable cylindrical casing closed at both ends, having a smooth interior surface, a single slot therethrough parallel to the axis of said casing extending :tor the full length oi' the interior of said casing and slightly longer than the article to be dispensed, a lip extending inwardly i'roin the inner surface of said casing and from the lower edge 0i' said slot, the width oi said lip and the width of said slot being respectively a little greater than the diameter ol'l the article to be dispensed, a stationary member having a cylindrical suritace ting against substantially the lower halt of said casing and providing a. ledge parallel to and substantially on a level with the axis of said casing, and a receiver mountcd on said stationary member and extending outwardly and downwardly from said ledge.
