As the method by which the actual operation of the window is effected by the said gear is'not essential to this invention and lends itself to usewitlr many different mechanical arrangements for actually lifting and lowering a window, further description of this part of the device is not entered into herein, except to explain that in the illustrated arrangement thesaid 'gear 3 is rotatable onfasupportingplatev 6 suitably attached within the structure ofthe door 1, and is provided with a spring 7 acting more or less as a'counterbalance for the window and attached at its outer end to a pin 8 carried by the plate 6, which pinl projects through' an arcuate slot 9 in the gear and acts as astop, limiting the extent to which the said gear may rotate.y

Upon the uncut portion of the spindleextending through the said plate the pinion 11 is freely mounted in mesh with the gear 3 and the plate is provided with' a raised portion 16 about the said pinion 11'to form a support for a disk 17 secured thereto by screws 18, which disk extends over the face of the said pinion and partially over the face of the gear 3, and isprovided with a central' opening 19 of greater diameter than the spindle 12. Thesaid opening admits of thel projection of centrally disposed abutments 2() on the said pinion through said opening, so that they extend into a central rewcess 21 formed in the face of thesaid dish 1f.
The. disk 17 forms the .fixed member or housing of a clutch device which also includes movable members or brakes 22and 23 rotatable in said recess 21 and a clutch releasing and rotating member 24 mounted on the flattened portion 11i of the spindle 12, the said member 24C having an elongated cent-ral orifice 25 conforming to the cross` sectional shape of the flattened portion 14 of the spindle and ensuring the rotation of the said member 2st with the said spindle. The clutch releasing member is provided at its extremities with abutment-s 26 and 27 which enter openings or recesses 2S and 29 in the said movable members 22 and 23 spectively.
lt will be noted that the member 22 is provided with a tongue 22a slidably entering a complementary slot 23 in the member 2B, and that the abutments 2G and 27 of the clutch releasing member are adapted to engagethey innermost faces of the recesses or slots28 and 29 if the said clutch releasing member' be rotated slightly relevant to the members 22- and 23, thereby drawing` the said members 22 and 231 together towards the axis of the spindle.
These members 22 and 23 are provided with outer corners-or friction points 22" and 23", which may frict-ionally engage theI annular wall of the recess 21, but which are'witl drawnv from such engagementtherewith when the said members 22 and 23 are moved inwardlyl therefrom by the clutch releasing member; and as this clutch releasing meniber-is definitely rotatable-with thespindle 12 upon the operation ofthecranlr 10 it accordingly follows that the members 22 and 2? are retracted from the annular wallof th recess 21 whenever thesaid crank is operated in anydirection. Consequently, upon such operation of the crank, the pinion 11 Vis freely rotatedy by reason of the engagement of its abutments 2O in inner recesses 2J and 23Cin the said members 22"'and and the gear 3 also rotated for the raising or lowering` of the window.
lf, however, when the windowk is raised, its weight tends to perform the reverse operation and cause the gear 8 to revolve the pinion 11, the abutments 20 of the said pinion will press the said members 22and 23 outwardly so that theiI friction points will engage the annular wall of the recess 21 of the disk 1T, thereby locking the said members 22 and 23 against rotation in the diss and of course preventing further rotation of theV pinionl 11 by the gear Thus the transmission ofpower from the crank toV the gear for the raising of the window` is effected through the members andJ 23 simultaneously with the effecting of their inward declutching movement, but in transmitting power in the opposite direction from the gear 3 to thepinion, the said pinion effects the clutching` movement of the said members 22 and 23;
The simplicity of this construction is verv apparent. ln combination with a meshed driving pinion, and a gear wherein said gear at times tends to drive said pinion, means effecting the rotation of said pinion for the driving oi said gear and prevent its being driven by said gear, said means comprising a clutch mechanism, a spindle operating said pinion through said clutch mechanism, and means on said pinion eifecting the clutching operation of said clutch mechanism.
3. In combination with a meshed driving pinion and a gear wherein said gear at times tends to drive said pinion, a clutch including rotatable brake members, said pinion being rotatable with said members and also slightly rotatable relative thereto, means rotating said members for the rotation of said pinion, and means on said pinion effecting the clutching operation of said members when said pinion is rotated relatively thereto.

In combination with a meshed driving pinion and a gear wherein said gear at times tends to drive said pinion, an operating spindie passing loosely through said pinion, a clutch including rotatable brake members, said pinion being rotatable with said members, a declutching member rotatable with said spindle and transmitting motion of said spindle through said brake members to said pinion, and brake operating means actuated by said pinion.
5. ln combination with a ineshed driving pinion and a gear, wherein said gear at times tends to drive said pinion, an operating handle, and a clutch including brake members freely rotatable by said spindle and rotating said pinion, and movable to non-rotatable positions by said pinion, said members being coupled to said pinion whereby its rotation is depended upon and effected through said members.
6. In combination with a meshed driving pinion and a gear, wherein said gear at times tends to drive said pinion, clutch mechanism resisting such tendency and including a fixed housing, and members rotatable therewithin, said pinion being rotatable by said meinbers, and means checking the rotation of said members by said pinion, said means comprising abutments on said pinion engaging said members and moving them to nonrotative positions in said housing.
7. The combination according to claim G, including a pinion rotating spindle, and a member rotatable with said spindle engaging said members and moving them from a nonrotative to a rotative position upon the rotation of said member by said spindle whereby such rotation is transmitted to said pinion.
8. In a device of the class described, a gear, a pinion, a clutch including a housing and brake members within said housing, means effecting the rotation of said pinion through the medium of said brake members,
