This invention relates to belt-cutting machines and is designed as an improvement upon that part of the machine set forth in the application of Messrs. Russell, Farrell and Meyer, filedrJan. 17, 1924, Ser. No. 686,-

It is a further object of the invention to providea rotating gauge which Vwillindicate to the opera-tor in which direction the roll of belting is` tending to move and thereby enable him tol adjust the roller up or down as conditions may require. Y
In the example illustrated, only the upper roll is made.v adjustable to-varyy its parallelism to the other roll but it is'obvious that either or both rolls may be adjusted in carrying this object into effect.

At each side of the machine, as shown in Figure 1, are standards 6 and 7, the former at its base constituting a compartment 8 in which is located for driving mechanism for operating the arbor or shaft of the lower supporting roller. These standards 6 and 7 have formed on them ways 9 and 10 respectively;
On the ways 9 are mounted slides 11 and on the ways 10 are mounted slides 12. These slides are adapted to be adjusted up and down more or less, as fully set forth in the above mentioned application.
IVe shall now refer to the manner of mounting the upper supporting roller 13 in relation to the slides 11 and 12. The slide 11 forms a bearing 14 carried by a sleeve 15, having a slot 16. A shaft 17 is eccentrically mounted in the bearing 14' andv is adapted tohave one end of the roller 13 mountedv thereon'. For the other end: of the shaft 17 there is provided a bearing 19 mounted in a sleeve .20-which is'sustained by member 21l secured to they supporting bar 18 extended rigidly fromv theslide l1. The sleeve 20 has apertures 2121 .which receive pivot screws 22 which enter the bearing- 19 and permit a slight. rocking movement to the same and thev shaft 17 carried thereby. This pivotal mountin'gpermitsthe other end of the shaft to be adjusted for the purpose desired, as hereinafter; set forth.v Spacing collars 23 are interposed betweenatwo members of the supporting bar '18.- and held in position by bolts and nuts 24. Inrorder to steady the bearing sleeve 20- and prevent vibration, a bracket 25 is mounted on the slide 12 and extended under the sleeve 2O to support it as indicatedat 26. This-bracket is mounted to swing away from the bearing sleeve 20 by means of its pivotal connectionwith rod 27 which extends through-the bracket'. T he primaryl purpose of swinging the bracket 25 awayvfrom the bearingV sleeve 2O isto permit the endless roll of belting material, to be presently referred to, to be slipped over the supporting roll 13.
Referring now to the manner of mounting the lower supporting roller 28, one end of this roller receives a screw threaded projection n a stud shaft 29 carried by the standard 6. This shaft may be driven in any suitable manner, as by a motor fully shown and described in the above mentioned application. A hand lever 3l is provided for starting or stopping the mechanism for for rotating the shaft 29.
rlhe lower supporting roller 28 is the roller which is positively rotated, the ,roller 18 merely travelling with the endless roll of belting which is positively driven by the roller 28.
Thus by the adjustment of the upper roller 13 with respect to the position of the lower roller the belting material is put under proper tension, while the rotation of the lower roller causes the belting` to travel against the knives by which it is to be severed into separate belts.
Referring to the other end of the lower suppor ing roller 28 and the manner of mounting same, it will be seen that a stud shaft-8a carries a block 33 adapted to rest within the jaws 34; of a bracket 85 connected with the slide 12 by being pivoted on the rod 27 carried by the slide. This bracket has lugs 86 and 37 which lit upon the rod 2i and give vert-ical rigidity to the bracket.
These parts are 'sufliciently tight as to canse the bracket 35 to maintain its normal position in sustaining` its end of the roller 28, but which is yet capable of being swung laterally to permit the endless roll of belting to be slipped over the supporting roller 28 at` the same time it is slipped over the'corresponding end of the other supportingr roller 13.
rl`he instrumentalities for severing the roll of belting material into individual endless belts and the manner of mounting and operating` such instrumentalities are the same as in the application above referred to and it will therefore not be necessary to illustrate or describe them in detail. 38 designates one of the movable plates mounted on the ways 4. During the cutting operation water is supplied to the roll of belting through the pipe 46. A hood 47 held by an arm 48 aids in properly directing the water.
l.Ve shall now refer to the means for preventing' the endless roll of belting material from travelling lengthwise on the rollers 18 and 28. Such rolls of belting material when formed are usually smaller in the central part than at either end and one end is often of greater diameter than the other end. The means for placing the roll of belting material under tension after placed on the rollers 18 and 28 will tend to make the roll'of belting material uniform throughout before the cutting knives are brought into contact therewith, but it has been foundV in practice that the greater circumference of one end of the roll of belting will not always be entirely equalized by the tensioning members', and that when the roll of belting is rotated at a very high rate of speed as is essential for the cutting operation, the roll of belting will tend to travel lengthwise on the rollers 18 and To overcome this disadvantage we have provided a special form of adjusting and locking` device which have been found in practice to be efficient and prevent the roll of belting from travelling longitudinally on the rollers. lnthe present instance we have applied our invention to the upper roller 13, but it will be understood that it may be readily applied to either roll or to both, and we therefore do not wish to Vbe limited to the particular application of the invention here shown and described.
ln Figure 1 we hav shown a rotating gauge t9 so positioned that when the roll of belting material has'been placed on the rollers 13 and 28 and the rollers adjusted by the means provided on the slides 11 and 1-2 for putting the roll of belting under tension, the edge of the roll adjacent the rotating gauge should. just touch the same when the roll of belting is being rotated. If after tensioning the roll of belting and starting the machine, it is found that the roll of belting tends to travel away from the rotating gauge or toward it, which latter will beV indicated by a buckling of the roll of belting, the operator will know that the roll of belting is of greater diameter at one end or the other. llo overcome this tendency of the roll of belting to travel lengthwise of the rollers by reason of one end being larger than the other, we have provided means for adjusting one end of one of the' rollers carrying the same and maintaining it in such adjusted position, so that the rollers 18 and 28 will not be parallel to one another. This means consists of an adjusting handle having a reduced port-ion 51 which enters a recess in the bearing lei. rlhis handle maybe moved through the slot 1G in the sleeve 15 to raise' or lower the shaft 1T and hence the roller the shoulder 57 on the shaft 17 and has a cut-away portion adapted to have a locking` lit with the bearing 14. Then the adjusting handle 50 has been moved to the desired extent, the handle 54 attached to the shaftA :33 is operated until the locking,` colla-r 56 is forced into engagement with the bearing 1li thereby locking it against movement. It will thus be'seen that the end of the roller 13 at the left hand side of the machine may be adjusted up or down which will provide for preventing the roll of belting from moving either to the right or to the left of the machine. If the roll of belting,` is tending to move to the left of the machine, the roller 13 will be raised and if it is tending to move to the right of the machine, the roller will be lowered, the rotating gauge 49 serving to inform the operator of any lengthwise travel of the roll of belting. This rotating gauge also serves as a stop for the roll of beltinv.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine of the character described, the Combination with superposed supporting rollers adapted to carry and rotate an endless roll of belting, of adjusting devices applied to one end of one of said rollers and adapted to raise and lower said end to vary the vertical distance between the axes of the rollers, and means for pivotally mounting the other end of said roller to which the adjusting' means is applied.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with supportingl rollers adapted to carry and rotate an endless roll of belting, means to effect such rotation, means for adjusting,I one of said rollers relatively to the other to exert tension on the roll of belting', means to determine the position of said roll of belting relatively to said rollers, of means for adjusting one end of one of said rollers to vary the vertical distance between the axes of the rollers, and means for pivotally mounting` the other end of said roller.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with supporting,` rollers adapted to carry and rotate an endless roll of belting, means for tensioning said roll belting, means for rotating` said roll of belting, means to determine the lateral travel of said roll of belting relatively to said rollers, means to adjust one end of one of said rollers and means to pivotally mount the other end of said roller, cutting instrumentalities adapted to be adjusted relatively to said roll of belting.v and to sever the same into a plurality of belts.
