IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,209, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. DANIELSON, of Calumet, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object to provide a simple but effective fastening device for bags and sacks 5 and it consists in a pair of malleable segments or jaws, each having a halfround shank, through which a pin passes to pivot the shanks together. A collar, impelled by a spiral spring, slides on the shanks to close the segments together.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fastener opened to receive the neck of a bag. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same closed.
In the drawing, A represents a seinicyliudrical shank, terminating in a guide-segment, B, from which a segment-jaw, 0, projects, armed on the concave side with teeth a a. A is a similar but shorter shank, pivoted at b to the shank A. It has a similar segment-guide,
B, and a jaw, G, which overlaps the other at the extremity when closed, the guide-segments sliding upon each other. D is acollar, sliding on both shanks,impelled forward by a spiral spring, E, resting on a ferrule at the end of the shank A, through which a hole, 0, is cored in casting it, to receive a cord which attaches it to the bag.
To secure a bag, draw back the collar by the fingers of one hand, resting the ferrule against the thumb, when the. jaws will fall apart. Gather the neck of the bag with the other hand and introduce it between the jaws. Release the collar, which will slide forward on the shanks, and close the jaws firmly on the neck of said bag.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the shanks A A, pivoted together, and provided with the guidesegments B B, toothed jaws G G, collar D, and spring E, as and for the purpose set forth.
