ADJUSTABLE LAMP SUPPCRT.
Application filed July 2,
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in an adjustable lamp support. and has for its primary objectto provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character which may be adjusted horizontally, vertically and lengthwise in order to position a lamp supported on the outer end of an arm in any desirable location.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable arm of two sections, one of which is slidable relative to the other and having a cooperating means of unique construction for holding the sliding section in any adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide aconcavo-convex washer so constructed as to provide an annular knife edge which will bite into the member with which it cooperates to reduce to a minimum the likelihood of movement thereby overcoming the possibility of the fastening bolt and nut becoming loose.
The device above mentioned constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly useful about a work bench or other similar places as the lamp may be readily positioned to throw the light rays directly upon the work.
With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a plan view of an adjustable lamp support embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged sectional plan View of the clip and swivel socket members.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a suitable bracket for permanent attachment to a support such as the wall of a building and said bracket includes a pos1L 3 on which the swivel socket member a is journalled for a swinging adjustment in a horizontal plane and said swivel socket member is preferably formed from a sheet of met-al bent to produce a lll 1924. Serial No. 723,836.
a bottom wall 10, a fragniental top wall ll and an end wall l2; From the upper edge of the side wall 9 projects an upright 13 having a hole 1li therein while from the end wall l2 projects a clamping plate l5.
'lwo of these clips are secured upon one end of au arm section 16, one on either side, and held in place yby suitable fastening means such as a bolt 17 and nut 18, said bolt passing through both clips and the arm section 16. W hen thus in place the clamping plates 15 of both clips engage opposite sides of the swivel socket member e.
Engaging each clamping plate l5 is a concavo-conveX washer 19 with a bolt 2O passing through both of these, both clamping plates 15 and the plates 6 of the swivel sock- -et member with a nut 21 threaded on said bolt. Each of these washers is so formed as to provide a beveled rim thus producing a knife edge 22 which is the only part that will contact with a bearing plate and will therefore bite into said plate kas pressure is applied and prevent rotation of a washer relative to the clamping plate on which it bears and therefore the clip member may be swung vertically to different adjusted positions without the possibility of the fastening means becoming loosened. This is of considerable advantage in devices of this character as the support will remain in the position to which it is adjusted.
The arm section 16 of the longitudinally adjustable supporting arm has an L-shaped stop 23 secured to its upper edge at the outer end, thus providing a tongue for registration with any one of a number of notches 24.- in the lower edge of the sliding arm section 25, the latter being mounted to slide along the upper edge of the stationary arm section 16. lin order to hold the two arm sections in proper relation to each other, l provide two guide members :26 and 27 the former being fastened to the inner end of the arm section 25 and embracing the arm 16 while the guide member 27 is fastened to the outer end ot' the arm section 16 and embraces the arm section but said guide member 27 is oi sutiicient size to permit the arm 25 to be raised high enough to disen gage it from the stop 23 so that'said arm section 25 may then be. moved longitudinally relative to the stationary arm section 16 tor adjusting the length of the supporting arm.
To the outer end of the sliding arm section 25 is secured a hook Q8 on which is removably placed a hanger Q9, said hanger being of sister-hook formation and in the hooked ends ot said `hanger are. set the trunnions 30 of the leadball 3'. The electric light cord 32 is placed between the uprights 13 where it is held against accidental displacement by a cross piezie 33 in the form of a nail or the like inserted in the holes le in said uprights. This cord is then passed through the lead-ball 3l and has connected thereto in the usual or any approved way` an electric lamp From the l'oregoing description it will be obvious that the adjustable or extensible arm may be adjusted horizontally about the post 3, vertically about the bolt 2() and lengthwise through the sliding arm section 25 thereby permitting the lamp to be located at any desired or preferred position. Y
Ot course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and use/ful isz- In a. lamp support, a bracket, a socket member pivoted thereto for movement in a horizontal plane, a clip member pivoted to the socket member for movement in a vertical plane and having opposed uprights connected together, a stationary arm section carried by the clip member beneath the conection of the uprights, a movable arm section arranged 'for longitudinal sliding movement on the stationary arm section, said n'iovable arm section having notches in its lower edge, a stop mounted on the upper edge of the stationary arm section at its outer end and having a. tongue for registration with the notches in the other arm section, and means associated with the movable arm section to engage the tree end of a lamp cord extending between the uprights and supporting a lamp depending therefrom.
In testinlony whereof, I have hereunto atixed my signature.
