UNITED stares ROY STANLEY, OF CEDARVLLE, CALIFORNIA.
` SCREEN-noon OPENER.
Application filed' February This invention relates Vto screen-door openingv devices, my principal object being to provide a structure forthe purpose bymeans ot which such doors may be readily opened by a person desiring to enter`without the necessity ot using his hands.
Since screen doors, which are commonly closed by the spring hinges without catch means, are commonly used on' residences for the back porch or kitchen, and through which tradesm'en' pass to deposit paclniges7 of which their arms are frequentl full7 it will be evident that the application' my device to such doors will enable these f persons to pass through the'door and'deposit theirpachages inside without having to lay such packages on the ioor or elsewhere out-V side the door to permit them to use their handsto initially open the door, as is ordinarily necessary.
A lurther object of the invention is to produce' a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effect-ive for the purpose for which it is designed;
These objects 1 accomplish by means of such structureV and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal ot' the 'following specification and claims.
ln the drawings similar characters of retcrence indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Fig. 1 is a persepctive outline ot a screendoor showing my operating mechanism as applied thereto.
2 is a. side elevation of the mechanism showing the movement o1 the mechanism to open the door, in dotted lines. Y
Fig. 3 is a front elevation detached of the operating arm of the structure.
Referring now more particularly to the characters ot reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a screen-door of ordinary character mounted in a frame 2 and held in place to the trame along` one edge by the usual spring` hinges 3.
My opening device comprises a vertical plate l secured onto the door a certain distance from the floor and adjacent the free edge of the door, this plate having an outwardly offset portion 5 overhanging the outer face oi' the adjacent frame 2. Fixed on the trame adjacent the bottom ot the plate is a bearing sleeve 6 for a'horizontal shaft 7 which is provided with a vertical arm 8. This arm extends upwardly to adjacent the 1, 1926. senin No. 85,350.
tothe arm 8 and beyond the sleeve` 6 is'xjed another arm 10'pre'ferably shorter than the' arm 8 and projecting at an' acute forward angie to the frame 2. This arm is varranged' to be reversed on the'sha'it it necessary so as to enable the device to'befmounted in con#v nection with a right or left-hand openiiigj` door. An operating rod 11, connected at its upper end to the outer end or'` the arm 105 entends downwardly to afieXible connection' withan eye 12 which is' provided on the up? per free end of a foot-pad 13. Thispadlis connected at its lower endwith ahinge plate 14 secured on the Hoor 15 Aoutside the door in suitable alinement with4 the opening `structure.`
A tension spring 16`secured'at onefend onil to thel :france2 and at the other end onto'the arm 10 or rod 11 at its upper endsghrnainl tains the arms 10-and8'and the pad 13"no`r` mally raised.
1n operation a person desiring to enter the door presses sharply down on the pad 13 with a foot. This causes the arm 8 to descend7 imparting a sudden outward movement to the plate 5 and door, such sudden movement being sutiicient to cause the door to swing open a considerable distance. This enables the party desiring to enter to place his elbow or other part of the body against the inside of the door before the same tends to close, and thus allows the door to be further opened if necessary.
To prevent the roller 9a striking against the frame 2 Vwith the action of the spring 16, a rubber'or other shock absorbing bumper 17 is mounted on said frame behind the arm 8.
I preferably enclose the main working parts (the arm 10, spring 16, bearing 6, etc.)
in a housing as indicated at 18 in dotted lines on Fig. 2. This housing would be made of sheet metal or the like and besides keeping water and dirt away from these parts would add greatly to the neatness of appearance of the device.
It is also to be noted that while I have shown this device in connection with a door having coil spring hinges, it will ot course work perfectly well with any of the devices used in supporting screen doors and holding them closed.
F rom the foregoing description it will be readily seen that have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects or the invention as set 'lorth herein.
While this specilication sets r'orth in detail the present and preferredconstruction oi' the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not :torni a departure from the spirit of the invention as delined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters patent is:
l. An opening mechanism i`or a hinged door comprising a rigid vertical member to be attached to the opening side ot the door and to overhang the adjacentdoor frame, an upstanding operating arm Whose upper end is adapted to engage the inner tace or the overhanging portion oi' said inembe a bearing member and snpport for the lower end of the arm adapted to be mounted onto saiddoor trame, another and shorter arm mounted in axial connection with the operating` arm and normally disposed at an upward diverging slope to the door frame, a toot pad structure comprising members hinged together, one of said members being adapted to be secured to the lioor outside and to one side. oi the door` and the other member normally projecting upwardly at an acute angle to the lloor, and a Hexibly connected link between the upper end ol` said last named pad member and said short arm.
2. An opening mechanism for a hinged door comprising a rigid vertical member 'to be attach-ed to the opening side o the door and to overhang the adjacent door i'rame, a normally vertical operating` arm arranged at its upper end to engage said member, means pivot-ally mounting the lower end of the arm onto said door frame, a toot pad hinged onto the ilo-or outside and to one side of the door and projecting upwardly at an acute angie to the licor, and connection means between said pad and the operating arm to cause the latter swing outwardly mth the depression of the pad.
An opening mechanism for a hinged door comprising a rigid 'vertical member to be attached to the opening side oi the door and to overhang the adjacent door frame, a normally vertical operating arm arranged at its upper end to engage said member, means pivotally mounting the lower end or the arm onto said door trame, a iioot pad hinged onto the l'loor outside and to one side of the door and projecting upwardly at an acute angle to the floor, and connection means between said pad and the operating arm to cause the latter to swing outwardly through a substantially ninety degree arc with a relatively small arcuate movement of the pad.
