r m i a a OIL FILLING AND LEVELZNG DEVICE.
Application filed July 15,
This invention relates toreservoirs for a lubricating medium provided not only with means for filling the same but also with means for showing when the lubricating medium reaches the desired level therein. lt is an object of the present invention to provide a level indicating means which is positive in its action but which is operable only at predetermined periods" At the present time such reservoirs as for instance are associated with the crank case in motor vehicles are provided with a leveliindicating valve or overflow port which may be open when the reservoir is being filled and whereby an indication that the desired quantity of oil has been added is obtained when the oil flows out of the level overflow valve port. Such valves are generally manually operable with the inherent disadvantage that their closing after the reservoir is filled is likely to be overlooked with constant introduction into the oil of foreign matter and impurities through the open valve under the pumping action of the pistons, and their location is necessarily so remote as to make them inac cessible and inconvenient to reach for manipulation. The present invention seeks to so associate the level valve with the filler plug of the reservoir that upon closing the filling passage the valve will be automatically closed and will be opened automatically upon the opening of the filling passage. ldore particularly the filler plug is carried upon the end of an arm rigidly mounted upon a valve stem, said arm being adapted to ride over a cam surface to effect a raising of the valve stem and an opening of the valve. In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing a fragmentary portion of th top of a reservoir and the plug adapted to close the opening by which the reservoir is filled and the manner in which it is carried upon the valve stem of the level valve Figure 2 is a view in side elevation show ing a fragmentary portion of a reservoir, the filling opening, plug therefor and level valve, parts being removed in the interest of clearnessi Serial No. 43,697.
In the drawings a reservoir is indicated at a and a removable cover therefor is indicated at b. In the cover there is formed a boss 0 having a passage 0 therein through which the reservoir may be filled. A plug d is adapted to close the passage 0 and this slug is pivoted as at e to an arm 6 rigidly carried upon a valve stem Arm 6 is provided with an aperture 6 through which a finger may be inserted to facilitate the movement of the arm and is provided with a bearing surface 6 adapted to ride upon a cam g the lowest part whereof is indicated at g in Figure l and is formed with a considerably higher portion g whereby when the bloclrd is removed from closing position and the arm swung to the position indicated in dotted lines at E the arm will ride over the cam g and raise the shaft 7". Shaft f is journaled in a bearing a carried with the reservoir (4 and is axially movable therein. The lowest surface of the bearing a is formed with a recessed seat (4 against which bear two concentric coil springs 72 and i, respectively. Coil spring it bears against a flange f carried upon a sleeve f rigidly secured to the shaft 7 which sleeve determines the extreme upward movement of the shaft f while the spring 7t serves in co-operation with the spring 2' to yieldingly hold the shaft in its lowermost position. On the end of the shaft f or valve stem as it may be called there is carried a valve f against which the spring 2' bears. At an appropriate point in the wall of the reservoir there is formed a passage a and a valve seat 7' is adapted to be secured to the housing a as by the bolts j. The member has an elbow shaped passage therein terminating in an opening j lying in a horizontal plane. Obviously the reservoir a may be filled with. fluid up to the plane of the opening 7' indi cated at ca in Figure 2 before it will overflow, The valve f is adapted to close this opening under the action of the springs h and i when the filler plug (Z closes the opening 0.
When the reservoir is to be filled with fluid the arm 6 may be raised by inserting a finger in the aperture e and raising the plug thereby. The arm may then be swung to the position indicated in dotted lines at E in Figure 1 over cam g which will tend to move the valve stemaxially in an upward direction to raise the valve f 01? its seat and thus peunit fluid when it reaches the predetermined level r to overflow. As the mouth j is disposed in a predetermined plane coincident with the desired level of fluid in the reservoir, when fluid is poured into the reservoir a a positive in dication when the level of fluid reaches the predet-ern'lined point as is ascertainable by the overflow thereof through the opening j \Vhen the filler plug is returned to closing position the arm slips over the high point of the cam and springs 72. and i return the valve f to seating position to close the aperture.
Valve f may be pivot-ally secured as at 7 to the end of the valve stem in order to permit a degree of movement in order to insure a tight fit on the packing 7?. Packing Z may also be provided between the member j and the wall of the housing to seal that joint.
While the invention has been illustrated as appliedto an oil reservoir for the crank case of a motor vehicle it will be obvious that the device is applicable with respect to a reservoir of any kind for any fluid.
Various modifications may be made in the manner of raising the valve stem and no limitation is intended by the foregoing description of the broad idea of cooperative movement between the filler plug and level valve.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a reservoir, of
r a filler plug and a level overflow port and valve therefor, and means operatively interposed between said plug and valve whereby movement of the filler plug causes similar movement of the level valve.
2. The. combination with a reservoir pro vided with a filling aperture, of a filler plug therefor, a level overflow port valve there for and means to operate said filler plug and level valve simultaneously to uncover the filling aperture and to open the valve.
3. The combination with a reservoir formed with a filling aperture, of a level overflow port, a valve stem journaled in the reservoir, a filler plug carried with the valve stem, a valve carried with the valve stem, and means to open the valve dependent upon similar movement of the filler plug.
l. The combination with a reservoir formed with a filling aperture, of a filler plug for the aperture, a valve stem, an arm carried with the valve stem, said filler plug being carried on the arm, a level valve carried with the valve stem, and a cam over which the arm may travel.
5. The combination with a reservoir formed with a filler opening and a level valve seat, of a valve stem, an arm carried with the valve stem, a plug for the filling opening carried with the arm, a valve carried with the valve stem, a cam over which the arm may move and resilient means normally tending to hold the valve upon its seat.
This specification signed this 10th day of July, A. D. 1925.-
