LUBRICATOR.

This invention pertains to lubrficators, and, more particularly, to that type wherein a regulated quantity of oil is periodically forced to a point ora plurality of points to be lubricated.
Automobiles in particular, as is well known, requires adequate ybut regulated lubrication, and itis essentialthateach bear ingorpart tovbe lubricated shall receive its proper quantity of oil. 'The present invention'fhas for its object the provisionof a simple `structure whereby such regulated lubrication may be positively effected.
Theinvention, in a sense,-iswan improvement upon the structure set forth and claimed in 4my copending application `filed on or about July 21, 1922,Serial Number 576,600, to which referenceds hereby made.
The structure `formingthe basis of the present case is shown in the annexed drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a lubricator embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section taken on the line Ill-1I of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a suitable oil reservoir provided with a filler strainer 2 extending downwardly from a removable cover 3. Secured to the underface of the cover and extending downwardly into the reservoir is a bracket l, at the lower end of which there is formed a bearing 5 for a hub or sleeve 6 upon which is mounted and secured a worm gear 7 designed to be driven by a worm 8, which in turn is actuated from a moving part of the structure to be lubricated.
The shaft 9 is supported at one end in the sleeve 6, the shaft atits opposite end carrying one member 10 of a sliding coupling, the other member 11 thereof being secured to a stub shaft 12 mounted in the adjacent end wall of the reservoir 1,' and to which there may be. secured a crank or lever (not shown) through which the shaft may be actuated by hand.
The inner end of the sleeve 6 is provided with a projection 14 adapted to enter a slot formed in a hub 15 which is a part of a wobbling eccentric 16 which actuates the pump unit which will shortly be described. Said hub 15 is likewise engaged with a second hub or sleeve 17 through a sliding connection, the `hub finding its bearing in `a sleeve 18rextendingdownwardly, and preferably formed-as an integral portion of a casting or member 19. The pump casting is denoted by 2O andthe cylinder thereof is preferably controlled by an adjustable sleeve 21 inthe manner set'forth and claimed in Letters Patenti No. 1,262,979: dated April16, 1918. Theipiston22 is connected by ayolre 28 which'functions with the wcbblingecceir tric16. .Thelpump may be of any approved type, and in so far as the present invention is concerned, plurality of pumps may 'be employed,=as shown in the application above referred to. The construction of the pump will be such thatvthepiston is oscillated so las tobring spill portsinto registry when the piston has caused the discharge of a fixed' or vregulated quantity of oil, as is set forth in the patent just mentioned. The intake of the pump is shown as a pipe 24 that extends down to the lower portion of the reservoir. Said pipe is in communication with the intake port of the pump and a pipe 25 extends from the outlet of the pump and is connected to a port or opening 26 (see Fig. 2) formed in the casting 19. A horizontally-disposed bore or opening is formed in the casting and affords a seat for a rotating distributor element 27. Said element is designed to be given a step-by-step rotation, and to that end a star wheel 28 is secured to one end thereof with which (3o-operates a collar 29 carried at the outer end of an arm 30 secured to and rotatable with the sleeve 17.
Formed in the casting 19 around the bore just referred to is an annular groove 31, which groove is in alinement with a discharge port 26 of the pump line. The rotatable distributor element 27 has formed therein a transversely extending and in clined port or passage 32, one end of which stands in alinement with the groove 31 while the opposite end stands in alinement with a conduit or series of conduits 33, 34C and 35 formed in the casting 19 and designed to be connected up through suitable piping to the parts to be lubricated. A second port or passage 36 is formed in the rotating distributing member 27, said port or passage extending from the exterior of said member and opening into the porter passage 32, said short port 36 being inclined in a direction reverse to the port 32 with its outer end in the same plane as the discharge end ot' the port or passage 32.
The operation of the structure may be briefly described as folloWz Motion being imparted to the Worin Wheel 7, either through the Worm 8 or the shaft 12, a step-by-step rotative movement will be imparted to the distributor element 27 and the pump Will likewise be actuated. The
discharge of the pump and the positioning of the port or passage 32 with reference to one or another of the discharge ports 33 to 35 is so timed that when the pump is d'scharging the ports will be in registry. Oil forced into the groove 3l by the pump Will pass into the port or channel 32 and thence Will pass into the port with which it happens to be in registry, and flow on to the point to be lubricated. The port 32 will successively discharge to the ports 33, 34 und 35, and the short passage of channel 36 will likewise, as the distributor member is rotates discl'iarge successively into the ports 33, Set and It is manifest that but a single discharge port 3st may be utilized, in which event the channel 32 will first discharge, followed by a discharge from the reversely inclined chan- As above noted, a plurality of pumps may be employed, and, as will be readily appreciated, more than one inclined channel eX- tending. entirely through the distributor member may be employed, the second of such channels being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l.
What is claimed is:
In a force feed lubricator, the combination of an actuating shaft; a pump operated 40 thereby; a distributor casting having at least one conduit extending to the point to be lubricated; a cylindrical distributing member mounted for rotation in the casting and having an inclined channel formed there- 4,
the face of the bore in Which such cylin- 5 drical distributing member is mounted, said annular groove registering at all times with the inta-ke end of the inclined channel Which extends through the distributing member.
