CHUTE- FEED, TIP-GRATE INCINERATOR.
Application filed April 26, 1926. Serial- R o. 104 ,688.
This inven'tion relates to domestic and industrial incinerators for burning waste and rubbish.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel type of spark arrester.
Another object is to provide a novel ar-' rangement of feed chute in a forwardly offset relation to the front. of the combustion chamber for the facile introduction of the material to be burned.
A further object is to provide a tipping grate mechanism, and toprovide a liftable cover for the chute and having an operating connection with gratemechanism, whereby when the grate is tipped, the cover will open for inspection of the fire chamber.
And an object/is to provide for the disconnection of the cover, at will, from the grate so. that the former can be operated independently of the latter, for introduction of rubbish. f
An additional object is to provide a pneumatic check device for the falling cover.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the ensuing specification of the herewith illustrated apparatus embodying the improvements; it being understood that modifications, variations and adaptations may he resorted to within the spirit and scope f the invention as claimed.
Figure 1 is a central, vertical section of the incinerator.
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partially in section. 1
Figure 3 is a detail side view of the grate and cover operating means.
Figure 4 shows a modified arrangement'of the cover check.'
The present incinerator is built ofa series of co-related, unitary sections of a suitable cementitious, concrete composition, preferably of a 00d fire resistant mixture.
A grate ase 2 of suitable plan has a front opening 3 for air inlet and for extraction of ashes and unburned residue. Seated in notches 4 at opposite sides of the grate base 2are trunnions 5 and 6, the latter having a round shaft part and an outer square part 7 terminating in a head 8. The trunnion 6 is detachable from its side of a grate 10 having trunnion 4 at' its opposite side. The grate conforms to the plan of the base 2 and has its trunnions forward of a diameter so that the rear end of the grate is heavier and automatically falls to horizontal position.
Th shorter front of the ,grate allows it to be tilted to a high angle to discharge debris, toward theopening 3 of'the base.
The trunnion 6 extends .out from the base and receives a slidable hub 11 of a treadle 12. The hub has a squarehole to shift onto the trunnion part 7 and -efi'ect a tipping of the shaft when the treadle is depressed. The treadle is readily shiftable sidewise onto and from the square part 7.
superposed on the base 2 is a fire chamber unit chamber 15 converging upward and having a rim 16. Below the rim and extending forwardly of the chamber 15 there is a feed chute 17 inclining inward and downwardly and having an open top or mouth.
A cover, 18 resting on the lip of the mouth is hinged by rock-shaft 19 to a fixed part, here comprising a plate 20, having a stand ing, back flan e21 fastened by a strap 22 passing aroun the top or rim 16 of unit 15.- A spring 23 on th'e'rock-shaft 19 tends to lift the cover.
On rock-shaft 19 is fixed a lever 24 and this is' attached by link 25 t0 the treadle 12. in such relation that when the treadle is pressed downward the cover will be raised, thus leaving the hands of the person dump ing in rubbish free and unneeded in opening the cover. 4
Thetreadle usually rests on the rounded part of trunnion 6, and is shifted to the square part 7 only when it is desired to dump the rate.
Fltted on top of the chamber 15 is an upwardly convergent hood unit 27 whose lower end is interna 1y rebated at 28 to make a smoke proof lap and butt joint on the rim 16. The upper end of the hood has a neck 29 over which telescopes the flared foot of an extension chimney unit 30, one or more of which may be en erimposed. The upper end of the unit 30 1s reduced and provides a shoulder 31.
Mounted on the top of the unit 30 is a novel spark arrester comprising a head block or top 33 downwardly from which extends a set of bars 34 which are secured in a ring 35. Preferably the top 33 and the ring 35 are of concrete structure in which the ends of the bars 34 are embedded. A wire screen 36 surrounds the bars.
To prevent slamming down and breaking of the cover after it is opened I provide a suitable check or'bumper means. Preferabl such means includes a pneumatic check cylinder 40 having a piston 41. In Fig. 3 the piston is shown as attached to link 25 so that on up movement of the link the piston moves up against com ressed air in the cylinder, which is attac led to the stationary plate 20. In Fig. 4-the piston is slidably mounted in the cover and is designed to strike the lip of the mouth of the chute 17, and be pressed hack into its cylinder 40, on the lid or cover 18.
Another feature of the invention coniprises a monolithic door block 42 to set into the draft hole 3. This block has a handle 43 enga eable by a spring latch 44 which is attached to a cross-)ar 45 connecting the ends of the base. Simply pushing the block 42 into the opening 3 causes it to latch; an outward pull quickly disengages it from the hook.
What is claimed is:
1. In an incinerator, a fire chamber having a forward and upwardly extending chute, and a cover on the top of the chute, a tipping grate, and means for connecting the grate and the cover for coaction.
g. In a domestic incinerator, a. fire chamher having a feed mouth closure, a tipping grate, and means for operating the closure and the grate concurrently.
3. In a domestic incinerator, a fire chamber having a feed mouth closure, a tipping grate, and means for operatin the closure and the grate concurrently an for opening the closure independently of the grate.
4;. In an incinerator, a fire chamber having a titltable grate, a feed mouth cover means for tilting the grate and the cover,
and a cushioning means controlling return of the grate and the cover.
5. In a domestic incinerator, a fire chamher having a feed mouth closure, :1 ti ping grate, and means for operating the closure and the grate together and for independent action on the closure; said means including a grate rock-shaft and a lever shiftable from operative to ineffective position thereon.
