Application filed October 30, 1925.
My present invention p'ertains to waste outlets for railway cars, such as are constructed with a view to averting freezing of the outlets and for thawinr the outlet in the event Of the same being frozen.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a waste outlet of the kind referred to, characterized by the facility with which the parts may be assembled and disassembled, and also characterized by the capacity of parts of the steam jacket to brace each other while permitting of the escape of steam and water of condensation.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawinos, accompanyin;` and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a diametrical section of an embodim'ent of my invention designed for use in conjunction with the discharge pipe of a water closet bowl.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan View of the annular body comprised in said embodiment.
Figure 3vis a diametrical section illustrat- .ing' an embodiment of my inVent-ion designed for use in combination with the waste pipe of a wash basin. the said waste pipe being shown in elcvation as properly positioned in the outlet.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding' parts in Figures 1 and 2, which will first be described.
Among;` other elements my novel waste outlet heater comprises a body 1 with spaced dependent annular fianges 2 and 8 and with a' boss L1, interiorly throaded for the connection of a steam pipe 5 which may lead from any suitable source of supply appurtenant to the railway car. The upper port-ion of the wall of the central opening in the body 1 is i'ounded or convex in cross section as designated by G for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
In addition tothe body 1 my improvementcomprises an inner sleevc member 7 adapted to surround and bo spaced from a waste pipe, not shown, the said sleeve member 7 having its upper end turned outwardly as designated by 8 and opposed to the rounded portion 6 of thebody 1, whereby the' said sleeve member 7 is connected of itself to the body 1 without the assistance of any extraneous means, and in such manner that when occasion demands, the sleeve member 7 eriaI No. 65,868.
maybe expeditiously detached and removed from the body 1 to give place to a fresh sleeve member. A casing member 11 is appropriately secured in the pendent fiange 3 of the body 1 and its lower end is slightly taperedinwardly, as designated by 12, and is fluted or corrugated as designated by 9. The said fluted or corrugated portion l9'is adapted to serve as an interposed brace and the Channels of the said portion are adapted for the discharge of steam and water of condensa-tion from the space 10 between the sleeye member 7 and the casing'm-ember 11.
In the practical use of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, it will be readily understood that steam supplied to the pipe 5 through the jacket about the sleeve memher 7 will eifectively prevent freezing of the Outlet. It will also be appreciated that when necessary, the members 7 and 11 which are of sheet metal, may be readily removed from the body 1 and as readily replaced by fresh members of similar construction.
lin the modified constructiony shown in Figure 3, the waste pipe carried through the outlet is nnmbered 20. The said Outlet is similar to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the exception that the body 1a of the modification is provided with a. pedestal portion 1b on which is threaded a cap 21, confined in which is an annular gasket or packing` member 22 which surrounds the waste pipe 20 and is interposed between the cap 21 and the upper end of said pedestal 1b. It Will also be noted in the said modification that the sleeve member 7a is carried upwardly through the body to the upper end of the pedestal 1b, and is there provided with an outwardly directed 'flange 7? which is superposed on the pedestal and is interposed between the said pedestal and the said gasket or packinp; member 22. The steam supply pipe of the modification is numbered 5a. The casing member 11 of the modification is similar in construction to the memberll of Figure 1., and the lower end portion of the sleeve member 7a in the modification is similar to the sleeve member 7 of Figure 1.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that both embodiments of my invention are simple and inexpensive in construction, and both embodiments are well adapted to withstand the usage to which waste outlets are ordinarily subjected on railway cars.
As appears in Figures 1 and 8, the steam supply pipev 5 is threaded in the body of the llO device and is in communication with the space between the members 7 and 11; also, that the member 11 may be soldered at 11 to the body or may otherwise be connected to the body without departure from my claimed invention.
lVhile I have specifically described the preferred embodiments of my invention in detail, I do not desire to be understood as oonfining myseltl to the precise construction and relative arrangement of the different elements, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which changes in the structure and arrangeinent may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat' ent, is z- Taste Outlet heating means comprising an annular body with spaced pendent annular flanges, a Sheet metal sleeve member adapted to receive a waste pipe, said sleeve member being increased in dia-meter downwardly and having an upper end portion snugly fitting within the inner pendent fiange ot' the body and suspended from the body, and a Sheet metal casing` member secured within and pendent 'from the outer annular fiange of the body and having an inwardly inclined lower end portion, said inclined lower end portion being),` finted vertically and being opposed at its lower edge to the lower portion of the sleeve member, and the said fiuted portion being` adapted to sti''en and strengthen the lower end of the casingl member and to permit the escape of steam and water otl condeir sation from between the casing mei'nber and sleeve member.
