Seat-Back fn r Carriages. Y No.151040r Patented March23,1875

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO E. EUBBELL, OE SANDUSKY, OEIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAT-BACKS FOR CARRIAGES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,040, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 3, 1875.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO F. HUBBELL, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Carriage-Seat Backs, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention' such as will enabe others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in metallic carriage-seat backs, and more particularly to the construction of the ange at the top of the said seat-back.`
My invention consists in combining with the said flange a wire, rolled in at the edge of the same, and a fillet placed between the said wire and the seat-back proper.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan View of a seat embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the seat and the seat-back, showing my'improvement in the ange. Y
A is the bottom of the seat; B, the back; O, the flange. D is a wire rolled in at the outer edge of the iian ge, extending all the way round. E is a llet between the Wire and the seat-back. The said lillet, as represented in Fig. l, may extend all the way rounddhe seat back and sides; or it rmay extend only' from the extremities of the sides back around the corners, which, for ordinary purposes, is sufioient to give the required strength to the Structure.
The rolling in of the wire at the edge of the flange makes a curved and neatly-rounded linish, that is readily dressed and presents a pleasing eHect. At the same time it gives to the flange additional support, and is sufficient to secure the required stiffness, should the fillet be made in sections, leaving spaces, as heretofore described.
The curved form, by rolling in wire, also serves to make a smooth surface beneath the flange, that will not scratch or tear the hand or glove of a person that may seize hold of the same while riding.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the metallic seatback B, of the wire D rolled in the edge thereof, and fillet E secured between the said wire and seatback, as and for the purposes described.
2. The metallic seat-back, consisting of the back B, in the outer edge of which is rolled a Wire, D, and a fillet, E, secured between the said wire and the seat-back, and made to eX- tend only from the extremities of the sides back around the corners of the seat-back, the parts combined, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of January, 1875.
ALONZO F. HUBBELL.
