FASTENING DEVICE FOR MILK-CAN COVERS Application filed July 29, 1925. Serial No. 46,833.
This invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices for' milk can covers, and aims to provide a device of this character which securely holds the cover in position and yet isreadily releasable and also,
readily adjusted to locking position.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character which is permanently attached to the can and cover, but which permits the cover to be manipulated to fill and discharge the can and which also permits the escape of dangerous pressures.
A further object is to provide a fastening device of this character wherein slack and wear are automatically taken up.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and eifective in operation, not liable to get out oforder or to be broken, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out-inthe appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the fastening device in position to lock the cover to the can,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the fastening device released,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the device, as shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a view of the fastening device detached. 7
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a milk can having a neck 2 provided with a flange 3 A cover 4 is prowhich is substantially rigid when finally shaped. The rod is inserted through the registering opening at oneside, and has a washer 11 placed thereon to' engage the flange 5 of the cover and a washer 12 placed thereon to engage the flange 3 of th can. 1
Adjacent its upper end the rod is curved laterally as at 13, and then formed with an open and almost a complete coil 14 which extends spiral fashion about and just beyond the adjacent portion of the rod 10. At its lower endthe rod is formed with an eye 15. A retractile coil spring 16 is provided, and has one end connected as at 17 to the eye 15, and its other end connected to a hook designated generally at 18. The hook 18 comprises a shank 19 having a loop 20 connected to the spring 16 and a bill 21 engageable with the other set of registering openings in the flanges.v of the can and cover. The device may be assembled with the can and cover by threading the coil'l4 of the rod 10 upwardly through one set of openings prior to assembling the washer 11 thereon.
The washer 11 is then placed on the rod below the coil 14 and the coil 14 is flattened out to permanently connect the rod to the openings.
I claim 1. A fastening device for securing covers to milk cans comprising a rod connected to the can and cover, a spring connected to the rod, and a hook carried by the spring and engageable with the can and cover at a point spaced from the rod.
2. A fastening devlce for securing a cover to a milk can comprising means for perma-- nently connecting the-can and cover while permitting the cover to be moved away from and rotated relative to the can, an elastic element having one end connected to said means and adapted to be stretched around the neck of the can below'the cover, and means for releasably connecting the other end of the elastic element to the can and cover at a point spaced from said first mentioned means.
A fastening device for securing covers to milk cans comprising a rod permanently connected to the can and cover While permitting the cover to be moved away from and rotated relative to the can, a retractile coil spring connected to the rod and adapted to be stretched around the can below the cover, and a hook carried by the spring and engageable with the can and cover at a point spaced from the rod.
4. A fastening device for securing covers having apertured flanges to milk cans having necks provided with apertured flanges and comprising a rod inserted through one set of alined apertures and having an ofiset coil at one end and an eye at its other end, a retractile coil spring having one end'connected to the eye, and a (hook carried by the other end of the coil spring, said hook being engageable With another set of registered openings when the spring is stretched around the neck of the can.
