MINING MACHINE.
My invention relates to mining machines.
It has for its object to provide an improved mining machine. A further object of my invention is to provide a mining machine having improved feeding mechanism adapted to exert the desired variable speed feeding action and to be manufactured at materially reduced expense. A still further object of my invention is to provide a mining machine having an improved variable speed truck drive preferably driven and controlled by the feeding mechanism. These and other objects of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine equipped with my improvement and mounted on its transport truck.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation on the opposite side of the machine when the latter is removed from the truck and in cutting position on the bottom.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partially in section of the rear end of the machine shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on line 77 of Fig. 6.
In this illustrative construction I have shown a machine of the general reversible type described and claimed in my co-pending application Ser. No. 232,803, filed May 6. 1918 and comprising a machine frame 1 carrying a usual cutter bar 2, having a cutter chain 3 thereon driven by mechanism hereinafterdescribed, and a feed operating member 4 disposed ona transverse axis and cooperating with a flexible feeding member 5 disposable relative to idlers 6, 7, 8, and 9 on the machine to propel the machine on the mine bottom; a truck driving member 10, also on a transverse axis, being provided on the opposite side of the machine and connected through a sprocket and chain connection 11 to the wheels 12 of a truck 13 to propel the machine about the 'mine when the same is mounted upon the truck; and the feed operating and truck driving members 4 and being transposable at will with the necessary idlers in such a. manner as to enable the machine to be used as either a right or left hand cutter.
In my improved construction, the horizontal armature shaft 14 of the machine motor 15 carries on its rear end a bevel pinion 16 meshing with a larger bevel gear 17 keyed as at 18 to an upright shaft 19 supported on the frame in suitable roller bearings 20 and an upper adjustable bearing 21 removable through the top of the frame. This-shaft 19 has fixed to its lower end a helical gear 22 which in turn meshes with a larger helical gear 23 fixed as by one or more screws 24 to a cutter chain sprocket journal 25 which is in turn keyed as at 26 to another rearwardly located upright shaft 27 suitably journaled at is upper end in the frame as hereinafter described and having a collar 28 upon its lower end. This collar, as shown, rests upon a bearing ring 29 which is in turn supported on a bearing sleeve 30 rotatable on suitable roller bearings 31 housed in a removable shoe plate 32 having its outer surface lying flush with the shoe 33 of the machine and attached to the frame of the machine by suitable screws 34. As shown a ring-like member 35 is attached as by screws 36 to the member 25 and a cooperating sleeve 37 is provided between the member 25 and a cutter chain sprocket 38 which is rotatable thereon and adapted to be connected to the gear 23 by any usual form of cutter chain clutch fingers 39 movable through apertures 40 in the gear 23 and into engagement with suitable teeth 41 formed on the upper end of the sprocket sleeve. As this last is a well known construction common in mining machines, the same is not illustrated in detail herein, it being sufficient to say that a plurality of the members 39 is provided on a clutch spider 42 adjustable on the shaft 27 toward and from clutching position by a shipper yoke 43 pivoted at 44 on a transverse pivot on the frame and operable through an cecentric, detent controlled, operating lever 45 on the side of the machine.
Operatively connected to the cutter chain driving mechanism is improved feeding mechanism. As shown a worm 46 is keyed as at 47 to the shaft 27 at a point above the clutch yoke 43 and meshes with a worm gear 48 rotatably mounted on a transverse driving shaft 49 suitably journaled as hereinafter described on the frame and carrying atits opposite ends the feed operating member 4 and truck driving member 10. As shown the upper end of the shaft is suitably journaled in roller bearings 50 carried on an upper removable frame member, and the upper end of this shaft has adjustably fixed thereto, as by a screw 52 and a he 53, a pinion 54 meshing with a larger gear, ierein a sectional gear" 55, similarly attached as by a screw and a key 57 to the upper end of another upright but shorter shaft 58 j ournaled in bearings 59 a d 60 on the frame and carrying between its ends va worm 61 of considerably less pitch than the worm 46. This worm 61 in turn meshes with a worm gear 62 rotatably mounted on the shaft 49, both the worm gears 48 and 62 being car ried on clutch sleeves 63 and 64, respectively, having teeth 65 and 66 adapted to be engaged by corresponding teeth 67 and 68 on movable clutch sleeves 69 and 70 movable longitudinally of the shaft'to connect the members 63 and .64 to or disconnect the same from correspondin ly toothed sleeves 63 and 64 fixed to a sleeve 71 surrounding the shaft 49 and connectable thereto at willthrough friction clutch mechanism adjacent the feed operating member 4. As shown the sleeve 71 is provided with a flange 72 suitably connected as b screws 73 to the rotatable member 74 on t le friction clutch 75 surrounding the shaft, the other member 7 6 of the clutch being keyed to the shaft as at- 77 and the p'ress'ure'exerted on the clutch bein controlled by' an annular movable cylinder 78 movable relative toa corresponding stationary annularpiston 79 to which suitable fluid or'liqiud pressure is supplied through a conduit 80 from a hand operated pump 81. As shown, the feed operating member 4 is keyed as at'82 to the adjacent end of the shaft 49 and held in positibn'thereon by a screw and washer 83, the feed operating member also being provided with a sleeve 84 suitably ro tatably mounted in ball bearings 85 disposed between the sleeve and a stationary piston carrying member 86 suitably fixed to the frame andhaving the conduit 80 therein.
Attentipn'is also directed to the fact that thegear 23 also meshes with a helical pinion 87 on the lower end of a second short upright shaft 88 suitably journaled above the pinion on the frame in suitable roller bearings 89 and its upper end in suitable ball bearings 90 surrounding a positioning sleeve 91 keyed to the shaft at 92 and adjusted thereon by an adjustingscrew 93, theba'llbearings being held position by a suitable clamping member94 and being seated in a removable flanged sleeve 95 sothat the bearings and shaft may be removed bodily through the top of the frame. Keyed upon this shaft 88 is a third worm 96 of the same pitch as the worm 46, and this worm, as shown, meshes with a Worm gear 97 which is in turn carried on a clutch sleeve 98, similar to the sleeves 63 and 64 and similarly rotatable on the sleeve 71, and provided with teeth 99 conn-ectable by the clutch member 69, the clutch member 69 thus serving to connect either the worm 97 or the Worm 48 to'the sleeve 71, while the clutch member 70 serves to connectthe worm 62 to that sleeve.
Operatively connected to the clutch menr bers 69 and 70 as by fork members 100 are control sleeves 1.01 and 102 carried on a reciprccable rod 103 supported on the opposite sides of the frame and movable about its axis and transversely relative to the frame slot without exercisingany control over the clutch member to cause it to connect the members 67 and 63, while in any position a movement of the rod in a reverse longitudinal direction *ill cause the member 69 to connect the members 67 and 99. The sleeve 102 is similar to the sleeve 101 but provided with a T-shaped slot 107' so that the rod may be movedv longitudinally in opposite directions relative to the sleeve and only operate the clutch-member 70 when it is in the short base of the T slot. In order that the sleeves may be held in any desired position of adjustment, the surface of each of the same is notched in two places as at 109 to receive a ball 110 held in place by a spring 111 acting between the ball and a threaded holding sleeve 112 carried by the frame, and a supplemental notch 113 being provided on the sleeve 101.
In the operation of my improved construction it will be evident that the connection of all the worms'48, 62 and 97 will be controlled by the friction clutch 75 and that any one of the worm wheels may be connected to the sleeve 71 by suitable manipulation of the clutch members 69 and. 70 to produce feeds of varying speed and in reverse directions, for example, a slow or cut ting speed may be obtained through the use of the worm61 whereas by use of the worm 46 a reverse fast speed maybe obtained, while by use of theworni 96 a still faster truck driving speed may be obtained. Attention is also directed to the fact that through the friction 75 not only may the lit) parts be connected but the speed may be varied as desired, and to the further fact that through the control member 104, the different speeds may be very easily obtained, the member 10 i being held in each position against accidental operation by the balls 110 and through its controlling sleeves rendered incapable of connecting two feeds simultaneously.
Here attention is also directed to the fact that the truck driving sprocket 10 is herein removably mounted on the shaft 49, the same being adapted to be connected to or disconnected therefrom through a threaded member 114 and a sleeve 115 receiving the sprocket, the two members 10 and 115 having clutch mechanism. 116 between the same so that when the member 114 is released the member 10 may be withdrawn from engagemay accordingly be removed and transposed with the feed operating miember 4 whenever desired. The feature of the clutch connection for the sprocket 10 and the transposable sprocket and feed operating member does not, however, enter into the present invention, the same being described and claimed in my co-pending application mentioned above, and it is accordingly unnecessary for them to be described more in detail'than to say that since the member 10 is thus connected to the shaft it may be driven at varying speeds through the feeding mechanism as described whenever desired or disconnected entirely from the shaft. 7
i As a result of my improved construction it will be noted that the feed and truck driving mechanism is coinpactly disposed at the rear of the machine and that the construction is such that the desired variations in speed of feed or truck drive may be obtained through an exceedingly simple mechanism of rugged type which may be mannfactured at small expense and which is at the same time exceedingly accessible, the member 86 or its counterpart on the opposite side of the frame being removable when desired to permit the mechanism associated with the shaft 49 to be withdrawn laterally Whenever desired, while the removable cover on the frame permits of the desired access to the worms and the cutter chain driving gearing.
IVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice. it will be understood that this form has been shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be otherwise en'ibodied and practiced without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
