UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
R. WESTBROOK MYERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TILTING CHAIRS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,943, dated March 16, 1875; application led Y December 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. WEsTBRoox MYERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to l ment in tilting chairs, and it consists of a drop or plate depending from the chair-seat, and bearing against a spring inclosed by a receptacle, with the bearing or bearings of its horizontal axis secured to the chair-seat, and an inner plate or projection for confining one end of the spring therein. A set or thumb screw is provided for regulating the tension of the spring.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a drop or plate cast with, or otherwise attached to,
and depending from, the spider B, attached to the chair-seat frame C, or it may be attached directly to the chair seat or frame. A web, a, strengthens the drop or plate A at its point of conjunction with its head a', which further strengthens it at its point of conjunction with the spider B. The drop or plate A bears against a spring, B', which may be a block of rubber, or of other suitable construction and material, inclosed by a box or receptacle, E, within which it is confined by the internal plate or projection e, cast with and projecting from the inner side of said receptacle, over or into one end of the said spring. Between the said end of the spring B and its tension-regulating screw F may be interposed a strip of metal, f, for the screw to bear against when the spring is of such a nature as to require it. '.I` he receptacle or box E is provided with a detachable or removable horizontal axis, G, bearing in perforated lugs g g, cast with the spider B, and about in a line with and on either side ofthe drop A, by which the chair-seat may be tilted, or caused to yield backwardly when the drop or plateAis forced against the spring B', compressing it, upon the expansion of which, as the occupant brings himself to an erect position, the seat will be returned to its original or a horizontal position. A verticalV axis or screw, H, depending from and cast with the box or receptacle E,l permits -of its attachment to the legs ofthe chair in any known way, by which the seat can be revolved horizontally to permit of its vertical adjustment.
It will be noted that, as the spring tensionregulating screw F works in the front of the. box or receptacle E, it can be operated by and without the occupant leaving his seat. h is a stop cast with, or otherwise attached to, the swinging receptacle E, to limit its backward movement.
I am aware that a block of rubber has been interposed between two plates hinged together in such a manner that as the upper plate is rocked it shall alternately press upon the upper surface of the rubber, thus 4causing it to act as a spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. The drop or plate A, attached to the chair-seat, in combination with the spring B', receptacle E, with the internal projection or plate e, and an axis, G, having its bearing or bearings attached to the chair-seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The drop or plate A, fastened to the chair-seat, in combination with the spring B', receptacle E e, axis G, having its bearing or bearings connected to the chair seat, and spring tensionLregulating screw F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
R. WESTBROOK MYERS.
Witnesses J. W. WIsTER., E. C, WEAVER.
