Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY M. CURTIS, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OE TO HIMSELF AND F. P. BOGARDUS, 0F SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENDERS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,883, dated March 16, 1875; application filed October 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. Owners, of Ypsilanti, county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Fender for Vehicles.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof asare claimed as new and are desired. to be secured by Letter's Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of fender's which are placed over the wheels of vehicles; and the nature thereof consists of certain improvements in the details of the construction of the same, hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings is given a perspective View of the improved fender.
The fender A is constructed of elm or any wood which possesses analogous qualities thereto-that is to say, any kind of wood which will remain in position after having been steamed and bent, and which will take paint and varnish well. The said fender is first steamed, and then pressed into the curvilinear form shown in the figure upon a former of proper shape. An edging, B, constructed of some material which willretain its position, and which will prevent the said fender from being Warped or bent, is secured to the outer edge of the said fender. The curvilinear rods 0 are bolted to the fender and secured to the sides of the vehicle in such a manner as to sustain the said fender in its proper place.
I am aware that fenders have been heretofore constructed of leather and sheetiron, and that such fenders have been strengthened by turning the edges thereof over an iron border. I am also aware that fenders have been heretofore constructed of wood; but
' I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 A wooden wheel-fender having attached to its upper side and outer edge a border or frame, B, as described.
In testimony-that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of October, .1874.
HENRY M. CURTIS.
