Description
UNITED STATES VPATENT OFFI.
FREDERICK SWAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,849, dated March 16, 1875; application flied January 4, 1875.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK SWAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Needlefook, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient contrivance, in which retailers who sell needles by the piece may keep an assortment in such a manner that the individual needles may be at once and without trouble selected as wanted, and thus avoid the annoyance and loss of time now experienced by all in opening the different needl'el packages, taking out the needles,- and closing the packages again, which is now the common practice.
To this end my invention consists of a booklike case, the covers of which are covered inside with cloth suitable for sticking the needles, and padded, if necessary, and the cloth is divided by conspicuous lines into sections for the different sizes and styles of needles, and' numbered accordingly, with a partition of leather, paper, or other substance not liable to catch on the projecting points or heads of the needles arranged between the twocovers, to prevent the needles of one side from interlocking with those ot' the other side, and in these different divisions I propose to keep the retail stock by removing the needles from the common paperpackages and sticking them up in the cloth in the sections corresponding in their numbers to the numbers of the needles, so that the number wanted can be seen at a glance and the needles can be taken without any delay or inconvenience whatever.
The stock will be replenished from the o1'- dinary paper packages from time to time, as
required, and when the stock-keeper has spare A time for the purpose.
Figure l, in the accompanying drawing, represents a plan view of my improved needle-book in the open position and with one cover of the partition turned up to show part of the book under it, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the book on line aa x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the two parts of the case or book, which are joined together at C to open and close like a book. D is the cloth or pad on the inside of each part A for sticking the needies E. F represents the lines separating the surface into divisions for different sizes, to be designated by numbers, G representing the size of needles, and H represents the paper, leather, or other suitable partition separating the needles of the two parts, so that they will not interlock when the book is closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an article of manufacture, a needle-book consisting of jointed covers A A, numbered sectional pads D, and partition H, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
FREDERICK SWAN.
