CIGAR-WRAPPING MECHANISM.
1 Application filed January 31,1922. Serial No. 533,098.
This invention relates to an improvement 1n cigar wrappmg mechanism.
In wrapping cigar bunches by machinery,
the bunch is rotated and a cut wrapper is delivered thereto by a wrapper support having a movement which is the resultant of an approaching movement, an angular movement, and a traversing movement. The complex movement of the wrapper support which results in winding a wrapper spirally about the bunch is controlled by three fixed,
cams, and heretofore the bunch rotating gear has been operated at constant wrapper-re- 'ceiving speed. The speed at which the -wrapper was delivered to the bunch wasv therefore constant. It has been. found in practice thateven a slight variation in the contour or density. of different lots of bunches results in the winding of the wrapper too tightly or too loosely about the bunch. In .the machines heretofore in use, this could not be corrected except by changing the fixed cams controlling the movement of the wrapper support, and that is not feasible when the machine is in service. The main object of the present invention is the production of a cigar wrapping mechanism the speed of which can be varied to change the relative speeds of bunch rotation and wrapper delivery, and thus compensate for variations in different lOtS 0f bunches. A further object is the production of a device whereby the desired result is attained by varying the speed of the bunch rotating gear. Still another object is the production of a device of this general character wherein meansare provided for changing the speed variations of the bunch rotating gear in ac-' cordance with the differential contour of bunches to be wrapped in the same mechanism. With these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafterfully described and then specifically'set forth in the claims hereunto appended. In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a cigar wrapping mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention and shown partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig.
6 3 is a detail plan view of the speed controlling cam and connections shown in Fig. 1; Fig.4 is a diametral sectional elevation of the speed controlling cam; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of. the jaws of the speed controlling cam; and Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the back gearing shown in Figs. 1 and I In carrying the invention into effect there is provided bunch rotating gear and means for varying the speed of said gear during the wrapping operation to speed up the bunch rotating gear when a wrapper is being delivered to a bunch too rapidly, or to slow down the bunch rotating gear when a wrapper is being delivered to the bunch too slowly. In the best constructions, the speed varylngmeans is cam actuated; means are provided for changing the speed variations of the bunch rotating gear in accordance with the differential contour of cigar bunches to be wrapped whereby cigar bunches of different shapes can be wrapped in the same mechanism; the bunch rotating gear comprises a group of rotating wrapping rolls; means for varying the speed of the bunch rotating gear includes back gearing in the gear train and the speed controlling cam has a changeable contour. All of the above mentioned parts. means and devices may be widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular device selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible embodiments of the same. The invention therefore is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described.
Referring to the drawings, 7 indicates the main frame of a cigar wrapping mechanism embodying the invention. and this frame rests upon the cigar machine bed the upper surface of which is indicated by the line 8. J ournaled in the frame 7 is a constant speed power shaft 9 carrying a spur gear 10 in mesh with and driven by a spur gear 11, which in turnis driven by one of the main power shafts of the cigar machine proper, not shown. The gear 10 is also in mesh with and drives an idle gear 12 mounted on a stud 13 fixed in the frame 7 before referred to. Theidle gear12 is in mesh with a gear 14 fast on a shaft 15 iournaled in the frame 7. Upon the other end ofthe shaft 15 is fast a gear 16. This gear meshes with a pinion 17 loosely mounted on a shaft 18 secured in a U-frame 19 which is pivoted on the shaft 15 A device adapted to be used for removing a Wheel from an axle upon Which it is keyed comprising a body provided at its opposite ends With alined sockets of different sizes, and anvil plugs fitting in the sockets.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.

carried by said frame, and cam-actuated of said devices during the wrapping operation.
5. In a cigar wrapping mechanism, the
combination with a group of wrapping decornbinatlon with a variable speed bunch wrapping devlce, of a speed variation vices, of a constant speed power shaft,'gearing whereby said shaft drives said devices, and cam-actuated means coacting with said gearing to vary the speed of said devices during the wrapping operation said means including a cam having a changeable contour whereby the speed variation of said devices may be changed in accordance with the differential contour of cigar bunches to be wrapped.
6. Ina cigar wrapping mechanism, the vcombination with a group of wrapping devices, of a constant speed power shaft, gearing whereby said shaft drives said devices and cam-actuated means coacting with said gearing to vary the speed of said devices durlng the wrapping operation said means lncludmg a cam comprlslng a drum, a flexible operating member on the periphery of said drum, and meansfor flexing and holding sald member.
7. In a cigar wrapping mechanism, the
changing cam comprising a drum, a flexible operating member on the periphery of said drum, and a series of screw-actuated retainers carried by said drum and engaging said member to flex and hold it.
8. In a cigar wrapping mechanism, the combination with bunch rotating gear operative in fixed position, of means for varying the wrapper-receiving speed of said gear during the wrapping operation.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
