UNITED STATFS ROBERT I). H. ANDERSON, OF NEVI YORK, N. Y.
ELECTRICAL FXTURE.
Application led June 29.
The present invention relates to elect-rical iixtures and more particularly to adjustable hangers designed tor supporting electric lights or other electric devices.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable hanger and more especially an extensible adjustable hanger having concealed electrical conductors.
The invention will be best understood from a description of a. particular illustrative embodiment thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings for the purposes of disclosure, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a view mainly in section of a hanger constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view ot the extensible arm showing'at the top the disc and the contact fingers carried thereby;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional detail View showing` the head secured to the upper end of the end telescoping member.
The hanger shown tor the purposes ot illustration comprises an extensible arm 5 and a plurality of hinge joints 6, 7 8 connecting the same with a. support 9, said hinge joints being so related to each other as to constitute a universal joint permitting universal swinging movement or' the arm. At the lower end of vthe arm 5 a suitable connection is provided for an electric light or The socket 10 may be made adjustable by providing between it and the lower end ot the arm a plurality of hinge joints 11, 12, which joints are generally similar to the joints connecting the arm to the support.
Y As shown, the arm 5 comprises telescoping tubes 14, 15 to the lower end of the inner of which the lamp socket 10 is connected. The arm is shown as consisting of only two telescoping tubes, but obviously the number of tubes may be increased to provide a greater extensibility it desired. The outer tube 14 is provided with an insulating lining 16 Within which longitudinal conductors 17, 17 are provided extending substantially the full length of the outer tube. As shown, the conduct- ors 17, 17 consist of wires held taut between a fibre insulation block 18 or other suitable device secured in place in the upper end of the tube 14 as by screws 19, and a similar block 2O at the j lower end ot the tube. The taut wires are 1922. Serial No. 571,829.
conventionally shown as vsecured to the respective devices by screws 21, 22. The inner sliding tube 15 is conveniently provided with a head 25 which supports spring contact conductors 26, 26 arranged to slidably engage the longitudinal conductors 17, 17. Binding screws Q7, 27 engaging the spring contacts secure them in place and ailord attachment for conductors, such as insulated iixture wires 2S, 28, which extend trom the upper end of the inner tube longitudinally therethrough to the lower end to carry current tc the lamp socket 10.
As shown, three hinge joints 6, 7, 8 are interposed between the support and the upper end ot the extensible arm. Each joint comprises a pair of relatively rotatable discs having concave faces presented towards each other and engaging at their coges. The discs may be of relatively thin cast metal or or pressed metal, preferably ot such quality that the natural spring ot the material will cause a desired yieldable friction at the edges ot' the disks when the pivot pins are headed over as shown. The pivot pins are made tight enough to hold the joints in adjusted relation. The pin ont joint 8 may be less tight than the others when the xture is to be secured to a horizontal support because ot' the vertical position `of the hinge axis. One disc 8O of the lirst joint is formed to provide for attachment to the supporting ceiling wall or the like. which attachment may be made over a. suitable outlet box 62 whence conductors may lead to the fixture. The axes 0i the joints are preferably arranged at right angles to each other, and conveniently one disc of one joint is formed integrally with a disc ot the next joint, the integral member thus formed having a passageway therein for electric lead wires. As
shown, the disc 31 of the joint 8 and the disc 32 of the joint 7 are integrally connected, a passage 33 being formed for lead wires. The disc 34 of the joint 7 and the disc 35 ot the joint 6 are .similarly connectedand formed with a passageway 36 for lead wires. The second disc 37 of the third joint is Jformed integrally with a coupling member 38 whichis adapted to receive the outer tube 14 of the arm.
The electrical connections of the three joints vare similar.` A description ot one set will suihce for a complete understanding ot all. lteterring more particularly to theV second joint 7, corresponding partsin
