POCKET LOCK.

This invention appertains to pocket implements capable of being used for a variety of different purposes, and the primary object of the invention is toprovide a portable pocket lock which can be readily and quickly applied to doors and windows from the inside-of the room for effectively preventing the opening of the door or window from the outside'of the room.

Another primary object of the invention is to provide a portable pocket lock particularly adaptable for travelers which can be readily applied ,to the usual type of doors and which embodies means for engaging between the door and door frame and means for engaging the inner face of the door and door frame whereby opening of the door from the outside byburglars and the like will be prevented, the device being so constructed as to permit the use thereof on doors of different thickness and doors with varying spaces between their forward edge and the door frame.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a portable pocket lock embodying a frame for slidably receiving a plurality of pivoted leaves, the leaves having means formed on their inner edges for gripping a door and a door frame, the frame of the implement having means for rigidly engaging the leaves and the inner face of the door and door frame, the leaves being so arranged as to permit any number of the same to be used between the door and door frame according to the space therebetween.

A further object of the invention resides in the formation of the leaves whereby the same can be readily used for-difierent purposes, such as a comb and ruler, bottle opener, wrench, and the like.

A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for mounting a finger-nail cleaning implement on the implement frame, whereby the finger-nail cleaning implement can bemovedto a hidden inoperative position and to an exposed operative position.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel combination pocket implement of the character described which will be durable and eficient in use, one which will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost. 1

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings,-

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved portable pocket lock which comprises a frame 10 preferably formed ofsheet metal of the desired gage shape. The frame 10 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section and includes the outer longitudinal extending wall 11 and the spaced parallel walls 12 which are provided with the longitudinally extending slots 13 for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully described. The outer wall 11 is also provided with a longitudinally extending slot let for the reception of the manipulating finger-piece 15 of the finger-nail cleaning blade or instrument 16. By grasping the finger-piece 15 the blade 16 can be moved into an operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, or moved into an inoperative unexposed position, as shown in F ig. 6. This finger-nail blade is adapted to be used both as a cleaning and fingernail filing instrument and one face of the blade can be roughened asat 17 to form the file.

The frame 10 supports a plurality of leaves which serve a variety of purposes. However the main purpose of the leaves is to cooperate with the frame 10 to form a door or window lock. As shown I have provided an intermediate fiat leaf 20, and pairs of

side leaves

21 and 22 and 23 and 24 which lie on the opposite sides of the intermediate leaf 20. All of these leaves preferably but not necessarily converge toward their inner ends and the leaves are pivotally connected together and to theframe 10 by means of a pivot pin 24. This pivot pin 24 also extends through the slots 13 in the side walls 12 of the frame 10 thereby permitting the frame to be adjusted relative to the leaves. The pivot pin has also mounted thereon a loop 25 which permits the pocket implement to be attached to a keyring, watch-chain, or the like, and when the finger nail cleaning blade 16 is moved to its operative position this loop 25 can be moved down in rear of the finger piece 15 for holding the blade against inward movement. 23 and 24 are provided with right angularly bent laterally-directed biting teeth 26 for engaging the door and for biting into the door frame. One longitudinal edge of each leaf is provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced teeth 27 for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully described. It is to be noted however that the teeth 27 of the side leaves 21,22, 23, and 24 stop short of the inner and outer ends thereof, while the teeth on the intermediate leaf 20 extend the full length thereof to permit this leaf to be used as a pocket comb. The other longitudinal edge of the intermediate leaf can be provided with graduations as indicated by the reference character 28 whereby the same can be used as a ruler.

The frame 10 at one end thereof has formed integrally with the outer wall 11 a projecting head 29 which is provided with a depending foot 30 having a slot 31 therein defining spaced legs 32. V

In use of the improved implement A as a coor lock the desired number of leaves according to the space between the door and door frame is placed between the door D and the door frame F, after which the door head lying on each side of the leaves. The

leaves which are not being used can be swun down at ri ht an 'les to the leaves in use and the frame 10. By this construction it is obvious that the implement can be adjusted according to the thickness of the door and also to the space between the door and door frame.

IVhile I have shown and described the implement as being used as a door lock, it is to be also understood that the same can be 7 used as a window lock by inserting the leaves between the midrails of the upper and lower sashes and by swinging the frame with the foot 30 into engagement with the outer faces of the midi-ails.

, The leaf 21 is provided with a notch 35 for permitting the instrument to be used as a wrench for small bolts, nuts, and the like, and one edge of this leaf can be provided with a cutting surface 36 to cooperate with the edge of the leaf 22 to form a cigar cutter. The leaf 22 is provided with a polygonal shaped opening 37 for permitting this leaf to be used as a wrench for small nuts such as used in magnetos, carburetors, and the like. The leaf 24 has one edge thereof shaped as at 38 to form a bottle opener and for pulling the top off of cans, jars, and the like. The leaf 23 is provided with an I alligator wrench 39 for adjusting small Jbolts, nuts, and the like such as 1s used in magnetos, carburetors, and the like.

From the foregoing description it can be seen that I have provided an improved pocket implement of a single durable character, which can be used for a number of different purposes.

Changes as in detail may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention; but

hat I claim as new is A portable pocket lock for a door, window, or the like, comprising a frame substantially U-shaped in cross-section including spaced parallel side walls with longitudinally extending slots therein, a plurality of leaves, means pivotally connecting the leaves together, said means extending through the slots in the side walls of the frame for pivotally and slidably connecting the frame with the leaves, door and door frame biting teeth formed on the outer ends of the leaves, adjusting teeth formed on certain longitudinal edges of the leaves, and a depending bifurcated foot formed on the frame for engaging between the. teeth on the longitudinal edges of the leaves for holding the frame in an adjusted position on the leaves, the foot e21 tending in parallel relation to the door and door frame when the frame is in its adjusted position on the leaves, the frame forming means for receiving the leaves, When the device is being carried in the 10 pocket.
