IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CRUSHING COKE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,765, dated March 16, 1875; application filed June 18,1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES GLAZIER, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Machine for Crushing Coke, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to provide a means for easily and rapidly breaking coke into small pieces of approximately uniform size, and separating the dust therefrom for the purpose of adapting it to use in that class of stoves known as base-burnin g or magazine stoves.

My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of an adjusting device and one of a pair of metallic jaws, one of which is stationary and the other movable and adjustable, and a sitting device, as herein more fully described.

The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.

FigureL-Ais a suitably-constructed frame, to which is attached a stationary jaw, a, and a vibrating frame, B, carrying a second jaw, e, and having a bearing on the rod 0. The frame B is so arranged in relation to the frame A that the jaws a and e are placed opposite each other with a small space between them at their lower edges, and a wider space above. The lower edge of the jaw e is made movable and adjustable in relation to the frame B by means of the screws 6 z', for the purpose of regulating the size of the pieces of coke passing through. To the upper end of the frame B a connecting-rod, r, is attached, by means of which, through its connection with the crank-shaft 0, a vibratory motion is given to the frame B, and the jaw e is made to alternately approach and recede from the jaw a. To the lower ends of the frame B, a sieve, s, is attached in such position as to receive the coke as it leaves the jaws to and e and conduct it to the front of the machine.

The operation of m device is as follows:

The coke in large pieces, being thrown into the hopper-shaped opening formed by the jaws to and e, is crushed as the jaws are brought nearer together. As the jaws separate the pieces fall into anarrower portionand are again crushed, the ratchet-shaped teeth or corrugations on the jaws serving to prevent them from slipping upward, and the operation being repeated until the pieces are small enough to fall through the space between the lower edges of the jaws onto the screen or sieve s, which, having an inclined surface and being constantly agitated by the vibrations of theframe B to which it is attached, effectually separates the finer particles and delivers the coke clean and of a uniform size, which size may be controlled at will by the set-screws ii.

I am aware that crushing-machines have heretofore been made, in which the crushingjaws vibrate and have a tapering space between them, and I do not claim such an arrangement; but- I claim as my invention The combination of the adjust-a blej aw 6, setscrews it, frame B, and sieve s, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
