Sifting sand &c.-Consists of two inclined sieves 1, 2, Fig. 1, mounted one above the other in a frame 3 reciprocated in guides 6 on the main frame by the piston-rod 4 of a motor 5. When the screens are inclined in the same direction, they both deliver at the lower end on to a plate 8, the fine sand &c. passing the lower screen 2 and accumulating in a heap beneath the apparatus. When the sieves are inclined in opposite directions the coarse screen 1, Fig. 3, delivers at its lower end on to a plate 8, and the lower screen 2 at its lower end on to a similar plate or on to a screen 9, an inclined plate 10 beneath the upper end of the screen 1 preventing the sand from passing direct from this screen to the screen 9. The tailing screen 9, Fig. 4, may be pivoted at its lower end to the framing and supported by a spring 13, a projection 15 on the screen frame 3 contacting with a projection 14 on the screen 9 and imparting a jarring motion to the latter. A suitable frame 10, Fig. 1, with transverse bars or strips 11 having teeth or cutters 12, is removably connected to the frame 3, and serves to break up lumps of sand. Both screens may be fitted with a lump breaker. A device for separating iron from the tailings consists of electromagnets 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, Figs. 5 and 6, carried by a cylinder 22. A pair of contact-brushes 28, 29 are provided on the cylinder for each magnet, and the shaft 23 carries a commutator 25. The brushes of the magnets 16, 17, 18 nearest the path of the tailings being in contact with the strips 26, 27 of the commutator, these magnets are energized, and, when they have gathered sufficient iron, the weight of the latter causes the cylinder to rotate until the magnet 16 is vertically beneath the axis 23. The brushes of the magnet 16 having then passed the contacts 26, 27, the magnet is deenergized, and the iron falls into the shoot 24. Simultaneously the brushes of the magnet 19 contact with the strips 26, 27, and this magnet is brought into action.
