Some parts of shoes, however, are of such form hat they are moved by the work feeding ans, for example an avrl, past the edge there is a tendency at times for the wollt to cramp between the avvl and the edge or for the edge of the Work to separate from the edge gage due to the fact that the movement of the feeding means is in a straight line While the edge of the work may be and usually is curved and at times on a comparatively short radius. This tendency at times produces an objectionable irregularity inthe spacing of the aWl-holes from the edge of the Work and may even result in a nail missing` an aivl hole.
hn object of the invention accordingly is to provide in such machines improved means .le for accru'ntely positioning the Work for each of a series of operations performed on the work, the po-:itiouing boing accomplished by the machine with a minimuni of effort and :attention on the part of the operative and in a simi'ile and @if ive manner. In the illustinted embooimeiu; of the invention this is mrccmplished by permitting the Work feedi= M nember and the edge gage to have movement trans iersely of the line of feed of the woflr dn the feeding movement but so controlling said .movement that at critical instants in the operation of the machine, suc-ii as at the conclusion of each feeding movement` the feeding member and the GU odge are positively positioned so that -i il the operation following each feeding movement is correctly performed at the desired location.
With this object in view, the herein disclosed machine is provided with an aWl arranged to pierce and feed the Work and with an edge gage to control the position of the vvorlr, the aivl and the edge gage being carried by a bracket mounted for ioating movement in a direction transversely of the line of feed and lightly spring-pressed towards the operator. By reason of the carrying of the aivl and the edge gage by this bracket the edge gage is positively moved in the direction of the feed With the aivl. This bracket carries a cam roll arranged for engagement, at the conclusion of the feeding` movement, .vith an opening in va stationary member.A This opening has an enlarged mouth so that the cam roll Will enter it, Yirrespective of the position of the aivl and edge gage transversely of the line of feed, but is formed with a seat arranged deiinitely to position the cam roll transversely of the line of feed at the conclusion of the feeding movement. Thus the operative is not requiredA to hold the Work up to a fixed gage or indeed to exercise any very accurate control of the Work but may position it anywhere Within considerable limits. In vinserting fastenings around a curve of comparatively short radius, for example around the toe of a shoe, it is only necessary for the operator to keep the edge of the Work Within the. range of the transverse movement of the edge Moreover, any tendency to cramp or jam in passing around a curve of short radius, with the consequent danger of variation of spacing of the awl hole from the edge of the Workv and of the nail not being inserted in the aWl hole,- is eliminated for during the feeding movement the gage moves With the avvl and there is no relative movement of the gage and the Work; While during the return movement the awl is free from the Work so that there can be no cramping or jamming.

ln the operation of the machine, the work is pressed by the operative against the edge gage 4 6. )uring the feeding movement of the awl the cam roll i8 moves in the cam slot 5U, at the conclusion of the feeding inovement bringing up in the terminal portion 52 thereof to locate the work in correct nail driving position. lf, during the return movement of the awl the et gage meets a curve on the work extending toward the rear of the machine, the edge gage, and with it the awl, will be moved by the engagement of the edge gage with the work towards the rear of the machine about the pivot 28 of bracket 30 against the tension of spring- 62 and during the next feeding movement the rear face of the cam slot 50 will guide the cam roll 48 to the terminal portion 52 of the cam slot correctly to position the work to receive fastening. Should the curve on the work exten-d toward the front of the machine the edge gage, during' the return movement of the awl., will move toward the front of the machine b v virtue of the action of spring 62 which will hold the edge gage in engagement with the work and upon the next feeding movement of the awl the front surfaceY of the cam slot 50 will. be engaged by the roll 48 to ensure the movement of the work into correct nail-receiving position. In brief, whatever the position of the work with relation to the desired line of feed during the feeding movement, it will be brought into corrcet relation thereto at the conclusionV of each feeding movement by the seating of cam roll 48 in the seat 52 provided at the terminus of slot 50. n
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A fastening inserting machine having a reciprocating nail driver, a co-operating reciprocating work-feeding awl, and a gage arranged for engagement with the edge of the work and mounted to move relatively to its support in the machine to contact with the edge of the 4work in. different positionsthereof in the plane of the work and correspondingly to determine thereby the point in the work and relatively to the machine at which the awl acts on the work,
together with means invariably moving the awl from its position of penetration into line with the driving path of the driver.
2. A machine of the class described having a work feeding member free to movev transversely of the line of feed during a part of its work feeding movement, and a cam arranged to guide the feeding member from any position which it ymay assume during its work feeding movement to a predeter mined position.
3. A machine according to claim 2 provided 'with anv additional cam having an operative and an inoperative position and adapted when in operative position to guide the work in a fixed path during the feed movement thereof.

A machine for forming a seam thereby to connect shoe part-s having, in combina,- tion, means for feeding the .work through the machine capable of movement t versely of the direction of the seam, a i constructed and arranged for movement with said feeding means transversely of the direction of the seam,l and means positively to position said feeding means and gage with respect tothe line of the at critical instants in the operation of the machine.

A machine for opera-ting upon slices having, in combination, a work feeding member and an edge gage, said feeding member and edge gage being arranged fm movement transversely of the line of feed, and means for positiifely positioning the feeding member and the edge v i respect to the line of feed at critical instants in the operation of the machine.

A machine for inserting metallic fastenings in shoes having, in combination, a driver, an aivl, means for operating said awl in timed relation to the driver for piercing the Work and feeding the Work through the machine, and an edge gage constructed. and arranged for floating movement trans` versely of the work during the Work feeding movement of the aWl.

A machine for inserting metallic fastenings in shoes having, in combination, an aivl, means for operating the aivl to cause it t0 penetrate, to feed, and then to Withdraw from the Work, a driver opera-ted in timed relation to the aWl to insert a nail in the hole made by the aWl after the Withdrawal of the latter, and an edge gage op posite the avvl and arranged for movement in the direction of feed With the avvl, said edge gage and aivl having capability of movement transversely of the line of feed and being provided With means to ensure their correct relation to the line of feed at the conclusion of each feeding movement.

A machine for inserting fastenings having, in combination, an aivland a driver arranged for relative movement in a direction transversely of the Work, means for operating the aivl in timed relation to the driver to pierce and feed the Work, and an edge gage arranged for movement parallel to the movement of the aivl during the Work feeding movement of the avvl.

A fastening inserting machine having a swinging head, an avvl carried by said head arranged to pierce and feed the Work, and an edge gage to control the presentation of the Work to the machine, the awl and the edge gage being mounted for movement transversely of the direction of swing of the swinging head.
26. A fastening inserting machine having, in combination, Work feeding means, and an edge gage separate therefrom, the edge gage and the Work feeding means being arranged for movement transversely of the direction of feed.

A machine for operating upon shoes having, in combination, an aivlarranged for Work penetrating and feeding movement, an edge gage located to engage a Work-piece -fed by said avvl and constructed and arranged for movement transversely ofy the path of feed during t-he Work feeding movement, and means for positively positioning said edge gage transversely of the line of feed at the conclusion of the Work feeding movement of the avvl.

A machine for operating upon shoes having, in combination, a Work feeding tool arranged to engage and feed a work-piece, means for giving said feeding tool a Work feeding movement, and an edge gage located to engage the Work-piece fed by said feeding tool and constructed and arranged for floating movement transversely of the line of feed during a portion of the Worn feeding movement.
29. A machine for inserting metallic fastenings in shoes having, in combination, a driver, an avvl, means for operating said avvl in timed relation to the driver to cause the aWl to pierce the Work and feed the Work through the machine, an edge gage constructed and arranged for movement transversely of the Work during a portion of the Work feeding movement of the avvl, and means for positively positioning said edge gage in a direction transverse of the line of feed at the conclusion of the ivorl feeding movement.
