WRENCH.
Application filed May 23,
The object of this invention is to produce a tool in the nature of a wrench for use by automobile mechanics which shall be of a construction to permit of the device being operated to unscrew nuts from bolts in places where the same are not readily accessible to engagement by an ordinary wrench.
'lo the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and which forms part In the drawing Figure l is a view illustrating the arrangement of the tool for removing the nuts from bolts on the crank case of an automobile.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line il lof Figure 2. a i
in carrying out my invention, 1 provide a straight shank 1 with an offset portionadjacent one of its ends providlng the shank vith a rightangular handle 2/ The shank outward of the handle has swiveled thereon a head T he shank has its opposite end bent to provide a iE-shaped extension disposed in the direction of the handle 2 but of a length less than mat of the handle. The arm 4. of is disposed nearest the handle 11 5 having its extremity enand bifurcated. and being provided *erse opening to receive there h the shank of a socket 6. On the n the portion thereof received in the cd end of the arm 5 there is toothed designed to have the teeth on either o'f laces engaged by oppositely arranged spring; influenced dogs 8, the said dogs having: their tail portions engageahle by cam surfa es on a niillet sleeve 9 that surrounds the bifurcated end of the arm 5. The sleeve is limited in turning by the contacting engagement of a pin 10 with the opposed Walls 1923. Serial No. 640,959.
or shoulders formedby notching the inner edge of the sleeve. When the sleeve is turned to one position, one of the dogs will engage the wheel 7 to turn the socket 6 in one direction with the turning of the handle 2, and when turned to an opposite direction the sec end dog will engage the Wheel to turn the of th shank 1 will evade the edge of the engine crank case during the tightening or loosening of the nuts thereon, while the space between the arm 4 and the handle 2 permits of the wrench turning without contacting the radius bars of the machine. The wrench is, of course, susceptible to other uses in connection with an automobile and like mechanisms, but it is thought that the foregoing description when taken in connection wi h the. drawing will amply set forth the construction and advantages of the improvement.
Having described the invention, I claim In tool for the purpose set forth, a straight shank having a head swiveled to one end thereof, a rightangular handle formed therewith inward of the head and its second end formed with a U-bend extended in the same direction and arranged in the same plane as the handle, the outer arm of the U-hend being enlarged and bifurcated, a socket member in said bifurcated end and a ratchet mechanism associated with said socket member and the axial plane of the socket being in a line with that of the shank.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
ANTON J. WOSTROHILL.
