JOHN F. TAYLOR, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRAULIC PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160.731, dated March 9, 1875 application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. TAYLOR, of the city and county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Hydraulic Packing; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a section view, showing. the con struction of the packing and its relation to the cylinder and ram. Fig. 2 is a side View of the packing; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same; Fig. 4, an inverted plan view.
The object of my invention is to obviate the difiiculties attending the ordinary leather packing in large-sized rams, it being difficult to get a large piece of leather of equal thickness and stiffness to make the rings, and the thin or soft part soon becoming twisted about in the groove, and finally loses its position altogether and becomes useless. It consists in the combination of a ring of compressed leather with an inner auxiliary packing of rubber or other elastic or fibrous material, the said inner packing being made fast to the leather, and the Whole disposed in a groove and made to operate as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A represents a portion of the cylinder, upon the inner face of which is formed a groove for the reception of the packing. B represents the side of the ram. 0 is the ring, of rubber or other elastic or fibrous material, which is made rounding at the top, and D is the cup-ring, of leather, which is attached to ring 0 by rivets E or other suitable means. Said cup-ring occupies a semicircular position about ring 0, the limb D of the said cup-ring being left loose and its end inclined inwardly to admit the water from the space F beneath it, so as to insure a perfectly-tight joint. By means of this arrangement the leather ring D is prevented from twisting and getting out of position, and the elasticity of the ring 0 accommodates the inequalities of the leather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination of the leather cup-rin g with the india-rubber ring contained within the leather ring, and fastened thereto by rivets or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose described.
