UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP A. JACKSON, OFDAYTON; OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE EGBY REGISTER COMPANY,
' OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
AUTOGRAPEZIC REGISTER.
Application filed July 6,
My invention relates to. autographic registers.
The object of my invention is to provide an autographic register in which, by means of a reciprocating or a continuously moving actuating handle, I am enabled to secure the successful clamping of the sheets during the writing operation, the ejecting of the sheets, the projection of aligning pins into the sheets through suitable apertures at a predetermined-interval at the end of the ejecting operation and simultaneously rendering the ejecting means inoperative, and reclamping the sheets upon the withdrawal of the aligning means so that the sheets will be reclamped in aligning position for another writing operation.
My particular obj upwardly through the paper in this combination and sequence of-operations, the pins riding on the bottom of the bottom sheet.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the register;
Figure 2 is a plan View with the cover removed;
Figure 3 is a detail view showing the rollers in clamping position with the pins out of engagement with the sheets;
Figure 4 is a similar view showing. the pins in engagement with the sheets and the rollers in'spread position; 7
Figure 5 shows a. view with the cams in inoperative position and'the rollers in en-' gagement with the paper;
Figure 6 shows the cams in operative position with the rollers spread apart; a Figure 7 is a section on the line 77 of Figure 2;
Figure 8 is a section-on the line 88 of Figure 2; and
Figure 9 is a section on the line 99 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is thebase of the register having the side walls 2 and end walls 3 and 4. A lid 5 is provided with a writing opening 6. The forward end of the lid has an arched shaped member 7 to contain the upper roller, The side walls 2 are projected upwardly at this point with,
ears 8 provided with slots 9 for carrying the ends of the upper roller shaft 10 to permit it to move upwardly and downwardly.
ect is to. push the pins 1925. Serial No. 41,471.
This upper roller is designated 12 and the I gear which it carries is designated 13. This gear meshes with a lower gear 14 on the lower roller 15 which is carried on the shaft 16 j ournalled in the side walls 2 of the register. Loosely mounted on this lower shaft are the plates 17 at either end of the shaft one side of which carrie the raised cam portion 18, the other the projecting arm 19. These projecting arms are connected together by a bar 20 which is provided with a weight 21. This plate 17 is provided with a stop member 22 to limit its rotation in one direction which is in the pward direction for the pins. .Pivotally suaported on this plate to one side of the stop on pins 23'are the links 24 which depend downwardly and rearwardly to connect with the vertical members 25 at 26 on the frame arms 27 which are pivoted in the forward end of the machine on either. side as at 28. Between these" depending arms 25 there is the bar 29 which carries the pins 30 beneath the paper. These pins are tapered on their forward sides very materially and slightly tapered on their rear sides; They are adapted to enter the file punch perforations customarily found in autographic register sheets and are forced into the apertures at a predeter- These rollers are geared together as herein-- after explained and are actuated by a suitable train of gears, Mounted on the shaft 34 on the inside of one of the register walls is a gear 35. This gear 35 meshes with a gear 36 on a stub shaft 37 which carries on the same shaft a somewhat larger internally disposed gear 38 which in turn meshes with a pinion 39. This pinion engages with another pinion 40 which in turn engages with the gear 14.
On the outside of the register the gear 41 is mounted loosely on the shaft 34. Onthe end of the shaft 34 is carried a' ratchet member 42 which is provided with cut away portions 43and-44. A pawl45 pivoted at 46 on the gear 41 is adapted to have its nose engaged with the shoulder formed by one of these cut away portions in order to lnsure the gear 41 and the shaft 34 turning together during a portion of the strokeof the handle 47. A spring 48 is attached to the pawl and to the gear 41 to insure the pawl falling into the cut away portion when it comes opposite to it on the ratchet 42. The teeth of the gear 41 are engaged by the segmental gear 49. The segmental gear 49 is carried by the handle 47. Thus with one stroke of the handle the mechanism will be' operated so that the paper sheets will be ejected and at the stroke of the handle in the other direction the ejecting rollers will remain idle due to the fact that the gear 41 is not turning with the shaft 34. This handle 47 is limited in one direction by the stop 50 and in the other direction by an arm 51 which engages with one of the cut away portions 43 or 44. Also carried on this handle is an inwardly projecting pin 52 which engages with a finger 53 pivotally mounted on a shaft 54 which shaft carries another finger 55 internally of the register,
' the free end of which engages with the bar 20.forrotating the weighted frame members and pins and ,cams.
dicate the several superimposed sheets having apertures 59.
Operation. 7
When the handle is in its forward position at rest the rollers will be in clamping engagement with thealigned sheets and the pin 52 will hold the weighted arms 20 upwardly and the pins and cams in their inoperative position. As the handle is drawn backwardly the sheets will be ejected by the ejecting rollers and the pins will be allowed to engage with the under surface of the sheets riding against the under surface due to the weight 21 on the weighted aim20 causing the pins to press against the under side of the sheets. As soon as the perfora-i tions trans ersely arranged in the sheets, which are-the usual file punch perforations, appear over the pins, the pins are pushed through the sheets by the weight 21. Simultaneously the cams are carried between the rollers to spread the rollers and render them inoperative. The clearance between the tips of the pins and the file punch holes in the sheets is substantially'2/16" and the major portion of this clearance is, of course, to the rear of the pins so in case the sheets are moved slightly by the rollers before they.
are freed from the sheets, the sheets will not be pulled against the pins and the sheets torn. As soon as the pins align the sheets the end of the stroke is reached and the handle is returned to its initial position. When it returns to its initial position the 56, 57 and 58 in-- a plurality of superimposed sheets interleaved with carbon paper and having spaced perforations, an actuating means, a pair of superimposed ejecting rollers operated by said actuating means during a portion of its stroke. aligning pins located beneath the sheets adjacent to one of the rollers, cams loosely mounted at either end of said rollers, means to carry said pins connected'to said cams so that they move together synchronously, and means adapted to push said pins upwardly and to rotate said cams to spread the ejecting rollers, and means to control said cams and pins according to the movement of the actuating means.
2. In a% 5111t0grapl1ib register containing a plurality of superimposed sheets interleaved with carbon paper and having spaced 1 perforations, an actuating means, a pair of superimposed ejecting rollers operated by said actuating means during a portion of its stroke. aligning pins located beneath the sheets adjacent to one of the rollers, cams loosely mountediat either end of said rollers, means to carry said pins connected to said camsso that they move together synchronously, andmeans adapted to push said pins upwardly and to rotate said cams so as to spread-the ejecting rollers, means to control said camsandpins according to the movement of the actuating means, said means to push said pins and cams into operative position consisting of a weight.
