'r1-Iona J. sneer, or KALrsPEnL, MONTANA appucanonaied sepi'teibersrso, 1925. serial No; 59308.
This invention relates to improvements in skates and has .particular reference to the roller `type of skate; f
An importanto'bject ofthe invention is to provide arollerjskate of the two wheel type design'edto permit-safe as well as confurther'ob'ject' of the invention is the provision of a` skateof the above character wherein the frame structure will be suspended below the wheel centers soy as to'afford more eficient 'balancingability A still Vfurther object of theinventionis `the provision ofa roller skate lof the above type which may be quickly and' comfortably attached to the foot ofthe user and thus facilitate the use o'f the skate. 4
Another object of the invention is the pro- Vvision o'f a roller skate lof comparatively simple yet durable construction designed to permit comparatively safeuse, and which maybe manufactured at a comparatively low In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 generally indicates the foot supporting frame which is composed of a bottom plate 6 shaped so as to conform to the curvature of the soleof a shoe and preferably constructed of durable metal or similarmaterial. Secured upon the top side of the bottom plated adjacent the edge thereof 1s a continuous side rail 7 disposed' in a vertical position and provided at the sides with or-` namental recesses 8 tending to lighten the structure and improve the appearance thereof. The side rail 7 is also of'metallicor similar construction preferably 1n the form of sheet metal so as to .withstand'severe usage.
' v`Positioned against the inner side of thel side rail 7 andV secured tothe Ar'ear'portion thereof is an upwardly extending heel brace 9 of substantially semi-circular,formation,
'this brace being .preferably constructedof i leather or vsimilar material.
arranged in opposed relation, :one of.. these `The upper edge of the heel brace 9v 'is provided with a pair of forwardly projecting extensions 10 extensions carrying a conventional type of 'strapbuc'kle`11V while a comparatively nar'- row strap 12 is riveted or otherwise secured f'to the L opposite extension.V This heel 'brace is secured "to the rear Aportion ofthe side rail by rivets 130i' in any suitable'manner so as to securely retainthe bracev in a rigid yvertical position. This construction will t YVpermit the foot of the user to ibe yreadily s positioned upon the foot frame and the heel portion snugly ylitted against the ,'heel brace '9, the strap '12 lbeing in an open position while the foot is being placed therein. i l
After the lfoot .has 'been placed vcomfortably on the kbrace the ystrap 12 is fastened in -the buckle 11l and the ankle snugly held in position. l
` In order that the forward portion of the shoe may be securely fastened upon the foot n frame I provide a transversely adjustable.
clamp 14 of common' structure, this clamp embodying a pair of angular clamp plates movably" heldin position by brackets 15. The clamp platesare provided with downward projections provided with threaded openings engageable with a screw 16 having right 'and left hand threads, so that rotation of the screw will actuate the clamp plates to adjacent or remote positions so as to readily engage the sole of a shoe.
The forward and rear extremities of the suitable foot frame carry a pair of wheel brackets j 17 comprised of a pair of tapered bracket bars l8vextendingforwardly and rearwardly' in angularv positions. These ybracket plates are formed integralwith or connected l to a pair of spaced wheel supporting sleeves 19 ofA circular formation. As is evidentV from the drawing,V these sleeves are disposed in elevated positions relative to thev footV frame ofthe skate and are 'adapted to rotatably support rollers or wheels 20. Y
VTheserollers7 yinthe present instance, ern-` body r1ms21 arranged concentricallv about Acomparatively small-hubs these members 'beingiconnected by wire vspokes 22er inanysuitable mamier. lTherims 21 are formed in an arcuate mannerso as to readily carry tires 23 of rubber or like structure.
The wheels, of .which there'are two' in numberv in the presentembodiment shown,
Y are mounted in association with the skate frame by positioning the wheel frame between the sleeves 19 and placing in position a transversely mounted axle. In order vto facilitate the movement of the wheels Vabout the aXle I contemplate the positioning of ball bearings Vbetween the outerV edges of the sleeves 19 and the axles, lthese bearings being covered by suitable dust caps 24; and retained in position bynutsl 25 threadedly mounted on the axles. c
It is obvious from the foregoing description Aandthe drawing, that a compact and durable skateV of comparatively simple design-is provided, the relative positions ofv the wheels to the foot frame being arranged so that thev frame is in a central underslung position', the center of gravity of the frame being naturally lower than the wheel axles.
This VconstructionV will render 4the use of skates of this type comparatively safe and will relieve the ankles of the user of the strain occasioned by skates wher-e the frame is in an elevated position. mind, it will be readily seen that a highly practical skate of thectwo wheel variety is produced.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown. and described -is susceptibleof lnodiiication and that variouschanges as to the shape, size and arrange With this inV ment of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scopey of the subjoined claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim: f
l. In a roller skate, af bottom plate shaped' to conform to the sole of a shoe, wheels carried by the front'and rear ends 'of said plate` a continuous side rail disposed in a vertical position and carried byv the-.bottom plate and provided with recesses, a `heel brace carried by said side rail, and transversely adjustable clamps carried by the c bottom plate and extending inwardly through the recesses to engage the sole of the shoe, f
2. In aV roller skate, the kcombination with afbottom plate shaped to conform to the sole y I rretoma afsnsBYj. y
