Y This invention relates to direction signals particularly applicable Vfor use for 1ndicat ing the direction in which amotor vehicle is to be turned, whether to the right, tothe left, or whethery the driver contemplates stopping. It is usually the custom to signal directions by using the lett arm. It the driver is about to turn to the right the lett arm is extended atan upwardangle of about 45 degrees, if to theileft ata downward vangle ofV about 45 degrees, and if thel driver is about to slow down the speed of the caror lcome to astop, the arm is usually extended ina horizontal plane.v
My invention contemplates a construction ot signals in which a signal element will simulate the arm of the driver. The signal element may be provided with a source ot illumination so that it will be visible inV in the position to indicate'that the driver isy about to turn to the right.

There is a rectangular indicator-enclosing casing 1 having a vertical edgeslot or opening' 2 through which the signaling element 3 normally'within the casing may be projee-ted. Thesignaling element is shown as f ing a centralopening 4in which isa light source such as an electric lamp indicated 'at 5. The lamp may be supplied with current from an electrical sourcesuch as a battery 6 through the conduits 7 and 8, there being a switch 9 to make and break the circuit in a well-understood manner. The casing 1 communicates ywith a vert1cal..elongated guide fconduit 11 having ya right' angular extension 12inv one wall 13 of which is ahorizontal elongated slot 14. In the lower edgefoifl the slot 14 .are notches 15, 16, 1-7 vand 18S whichreceive the stem 19 of a selector element 2O4 provided with a head or knob 22 by'means of which the driver may operate the selector stem along the slot. The selector stem has anarm 23 which is connected to a flexible member shown as a wire coil 24 in turn fastened to the vertically disposed flat rod or bar 25. The upper end of the flat bar or rod is connected to the'signaling element 3 yby two links 26 and 27, the links straddling the rod 25 and being fastened thereto by Vthe pivot 28. The opposite ends of the links are pivotally connected to the bracket arm 29 byv the pivot 30. Therefore, if theV operator moves the selector element in theJ slot :trom right to left the signaling element will be :projected through the opening 2 in the casing to properly signal the direction in which the car is to be turned vor to signal a contemplated stop. AFor example, if the stem. f
19 is in the neutral notch 18. the signaling elementv will be retracted within the casing. It the stem is in the notch 17 the element 3l will be caused to assume the position shown in F ig. 1, indicating that the driver is about to turn tothe right. If the stem is in the notch 16 the signaling element will be in a horizontal plane indicating that the vdriver is about to slowdown or stop the Y car. 1f the stem 19 is' in the notch Vl'the signaling element will be caused to Vassume the position shown in Fig. 4, in which event it willbe apparent that the driver contemplates turning to the left.

F rom the foregoing it will be apparent that the signal may be conveniently operated from the inside of a closed car so that the signaling element will be visible from the outside of the closed car', and that the various positions normally assumed by thev arm of a driver in indicating contemplated movements of the vehicle may be reproduced by the element. so that danger of the signals being misunderstood will be entirely l'eliminated.

In a device of the character described, ay casing' having a side opening, a tubular housing leadingv from av drivers position to the casing and having `a slot With selector notches opening to the slot, a signal element pivoted in the casing and tiltable through saidside opening, a link pivoted to the signal element, a bar in the housing pivoted tosaid link, a flexible member connected With the bar, an arm connected ivith the flexible member, and a handle stem on the arm selectively engageable in said notches to retain the signal element in corre sponding signaling position.
