To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwsnn G. lilansrmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traffic Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to directional signals for motor vehicles, the general object of the invention being to provide means for indicating to pedestrians, traffic officers and other drivers, that the vehicle is about to be turned to either the right or the left or that it is to be stopped.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for illuminating the s gnals from a lamp in the casing for enclosing the signals when they are in inoperative position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, ilhiistrated in the accompanying drawings and s 'iecilica-lly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, refer ence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view showing the invention in use.

In these views 1 indicates the casing which is adapted to be connected by the bracket 2, having the clamps 3 thereon, to the wind.- shield frame or any other suitaliile part of the motor vehicle. Three shafts l; are n1ounted in said casing and a signa l arm made in the shape of a hand, is connected with the central shaft l and a signal arm. made in the form of an arrow, is com'icrted with each of the outer shafts t, these arms being indicated by the nui'nerals (3 and 6. Each arm is connected to or formed with a circular enlargement 7 which engages the shaft. A connectionii is connected with each of the enlargements T adjacent the periphery thereof and in such a manner that when the connection is pulled downwardly the enlargement will be partly rotated so as to raise the arm into a horizontal position, the casing having its inner and outer sides open as at 9 to permit the extension of the arms,

and to allow the unobstructed rays of light from an electric lamp to play on the extended arms at night. The arms will remain in inoperative position within the casing under the action of gravity. The connections pass through a tube 10 and have their other ends connected to operating levers 11 located on the steering column or any other suitable part of the motor vehicle, so that they can be easily manipulated to raise the arms. An electric lamp 12 is arranged in the casing and is suitably connected with a source of supply. lVindows 13 are arranged in the sides of the casing so that the rays of light from the lamp will be directed upon the arms, when the same are in raised position, to illuminate the same and thus render them visible at night. The arms 5 and 6 are out of alignment with each other so that they will not interfere with each others movement.
In order to limit the movement of the connections 8, and thus control the rotation of the arms, a guide bracket 8" is provided for the connections, and is adapted to act as an abutment for stops 8 formed on the connections.
From the above it will be seen that when the driver desired to make a turn to the right he would swing downwardly the proper lever 11 so as to raise the arm 6', which will point to the right and thus indicate to pedestrians, trafiio o'f'licers and other drivers that the vehicle is to turn to the right. hen he wishes to turn to the left the arm. 6: would be swung upwardly, this arm pointing to the left and when he is to stop the arm 5 is swung upwardly.
it is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A device of the character described com prising a casing having its sides open, a LL shaped bracket straddling the opening in one side of the casing and connected thereto, a clamp on the free end of the bracket, a set of arms pivotally supported on one wall of the casing, connections engaging the arms and extending beyond the casing, operating means on the extended ends of the connec tions and a 1am secured to the lower verb 7 u I I I of the casing and having diagonally dlsposed Windows thereln directed toward the extended arms.
