This invention relates to passageway con trol mechanism.
The object of the invention is to provide means for controlling the passage of persons through a passageway. which control means are simple in structure and efficient in op eration.

The problem of efficiently controlling the entrance and exit of passengers to and from transportation systems. such as surface, subway and elevated street car systems. ferries, or the like, as well as the entrance and exit of patrons to theatres. amusement parks, 81c... and eii'ecting the collection of the fares or entrance fees from, and securing registrations thereof is of constantly increasing dilhcnlty with the increasing demands and requirements of modern rapid transit and the increasing numbers of passengers or per-- sons to be handled. Among the most important oi the requirements may be mentioned that of speed in handling and controlling the entrance and exit operations; accuracy and certainty of tare or entrance fee collection and registration; the necessity for insuring a. fare or entrance fee collection for each individual effecting an entrance passage; and relative freedom and ease ot entrance and exit movements withthc least possible obstruction under normal conditions but elficient resistance in case of attempted unauthorized entrance operation.
Various expedients have heretofore been proposed and employed for accomplishing these purposes, but the modern demands and requirements have exceeded the capacity oi the arrangements now generally employed, and have rendered such arrangements inefficient and inadequate.
Our present invention relates to apparatus of this general nature, and in carrying out the same we propose to employ a restricted Ina somewhat more restricted statement of the nature of the principles of our invention, we propose to employ two sets of barrier arms for a restricted passageway arranged to operate in successive order, whether for entrance or for exit movement. One of these sets, for convenience, we will designate as entrance barriers or arms, and the other as exit barriers or arms, and we propose to employ alternately operating locking devices for these barriers. That is, locking devices which are controllable to alternately lock and unlock both sets of bar riers, so that when one set is locked the other set is unlocked, and, under normal conditions the entrance barriers are maintained locked while the exit barriers are unlocked. For entrance operation the locking devices are controlled by the deposit of a coin or token to release the entrance and lock the exit barriers. The return of the entrance barriers to normal position after the person entering has passed beyond the entrance barriers causes an automatic release of the er-rit barriers and the locking of the entrance barriers. The deposit of the coin or token to effect the release of the entrance barrier also efi ccts a registration. For exit operation, the exit barrier is first operated, being normally unlocked, and the passage through the passageway of a per son in exit direction effects a release of the lock of the entrance barrier. These various operations in one form of practical embodiment of our invention are effected and con trolled electrically, the electric circuit arrangements employed being controlled by the deposit of coins, or tokens, the operation or displacement of the barriers and by the movement of persons through the passageway, all as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings wherein we have shown one practical and operative en'r bodiment of our invention, and which, in practical use has demonstrated its effectiveness, referencenumeral 50 designates a restricted passageway, see Fig. 5, which, in
this instance, is formed by means of the railings 13, 13, placed in parallel relation to each other and spaced apart the required distance to form the passageway 50 between them of the desired width to comfortably accommodate a single person. Disposed at opposite sides of the passageway are the frames 15, in the opposit ends of each of which are journaled the ver tical shafts 16, '17, respectively carrying barrier arms 18, 19, which form respect've ly, the entrance and exit barriers acroze the restricted passageway 50.
Upon the shafts 16, 17, are mounted a series of insulating members 20 upon which are mounted contact strips for cooperation with contact fingers employed the circuit system of the apparatus. F or illustration the insulating members on shafts 16 carry, respectively, the contact strips 21, 22, 2111i 23, the latter being in duplicate and disposed on opposite sides of their cooperating fingers for a purpose presently to be en plained. Cooperating with the contact strips 21, 22 and 23, are, respectively, the
fingers24l, and 26. The insulating membore 20 of the shafts 17, likewise, respectively, carry contact strips 27, 28 and 29, with which. res aeetively, cooperate the fingers 30, 31, 02. The various contact fingers 1 24, 25, 26, 30, 31, 32, are carried by a supporting member 33, mounted on the frame 15- Mounted on each shaft 16, 17, is acollar with which cooperates a locking bar. It will be understood that each side frame 15 supports a shaft 16, and a shaft 17 respectively, carrying an entrance and an exit barrier 18, 19. We, therefore, arrange a locking mechanism which operates to alternately lock and unlock the shafts 16 and 17 on the same side of the passageway. The locking collars on these shafts are shown in Fig. a, as designated, respectively by ref erence numerals 3d, 35, and the cooperating locking bar by reference numeral 36, which, when shifted in one direction, engages in locking collar 84 to lock the entrance barrier shaft 16, while the same movement of said bar withdraws it from locking engagement with collar The locking bar 36 is mounted and guided in the side frame 15, and is shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 1, in engagement with the locking collar 34 of the entrance barrier shaft 16, and out of engagement with the collar of the exit barrier shaft 17. This is the normal position of the locking parts and consequently the entrance barriers are normally locked against displacement in both entrance and exit operation, while the exit barr'ers are normally released and free, for operation in either direction.

The completion of this circuit energizes the fare box coil 64:, which results in closing contacts 66 and 67, and opening contacts 65. The closing of contacts 67, establishes a holding circuit for magnet coilG-l, from wire f, through contacts 67, to ground at 7a, thus being rendered independent of the strips 21, and contacts 2%, as well as of the coin 72, and consequently the entrance barrier arms are free to return to their initial position, and the coin is free to pass on into the fare box, without affecting the circuit of the fare box coil or. The closing of the contacts 66 maintains the circuit of the loci; magnet coils {it} closed independently of the coin 72, from wire (Z, contacts 66, to ground at 75, consequently the coin is free to pass on into the i -e box without affecting the circuit or the lock magnet coils 45.
The energization of tare box coil G l actuates in any well'known manner a register mechanism indicated at 76.
The entrance barriers having been passed and having returned to their normal positions, the entering person proceeds towards the exit barriers and in doing so steps upon the floor mat or section 54-, thereby opening the contacts 57 and closing the contacts 56. The opening of contacts 57 opens the circuit of the lock magnet coils 45, thereby causing the exit barriers to be unlocked and the entrance barriers to become again loclred. The entering person is now free to pass on through or past the exit barriers, the displacement of which causes contact strip to bridge the fingers 3.4- This short circuits the fare box coil 6%, "from current source B through 72/, contact strips and fingers 29, 32, to ground at 77, thereb;
restoring the contacts 65, 66 and 67 to nor-' inal position. The person then passes on and the exit barriers, which are normally unlocked, are free to return to their normal position.
The operation and control for exit move ment through the passageway is as follows: A. person approaches and enters the xit end of the passageway displacing the exit bar riers before him, these barriers beingnor mally unlocked and free for such displace ment. This displacement oi the exit barriers towards the entrance end of the parsageway causes the contact strips 28, to
bridge the lingers 31, while leaving the contacts 29, 32, open. The closing of contacts 28, 31, completes a circuit from trolley or current source lil throughcontacts 31, wire j, to floor controlled contacts 56, which i are normally open, but which are closed by the person making the c it passage stepping upon the movable floor or section thence through wire 70, relay magnet coil 62 to ground at 78. The completion of this circu'it causes contacts 70, 71, to close. The closing of contacts 71, closes a retaining circuit for the relay 69, from current source H, through wire Z, floor mat controlled contacts 59, wire m, contacts 71, coil 69, to
und at 78, so that the relay circuit is no longer dependent upon the displacement of the exitbarriers, and said barriers after the person has passed them are free to return circu ue closing of contact 70, closes a circuitough the lock magnet coils as, as follows:

The closing of circuit causes the entrance barrier to be- .me unlocked and the exitbarrier to be- ;e' locked, and the person is now free to pa on out through or past the entrance i iers. l hen he opens the relay magnet retaining circuit at floor controlled contacts 59 the parts return to their normal position, the lock circuit is opened at 70 and the entrance arnis again become locked.
The contacts 23, 26, control a retaining circuit for the lock magnet coils 45. It will be observed that the strips 23 are in pairs and they serve to bridge the fingers 26, when the entrance barriers are displaced in either entrance or exit operation. so that when said barriers are displaced, circuit through the lock coils L5 is closed from A, through a, contacts 27, 30, coils 45, a, contacts 23, 26, to ground at 80. This insures the loclri oi the exit barriers until the entrance barriers return to normal.
In 11 we have shown a slightly modified circuit arrangement wherein the deposit of a coin directly completes the circuit of the fare box magnet 64:, causing the latter to act to close the circuit of the lock releasing magne s. and also causing the holding circuit for thet ire box magnet to be closed, thereby permitting the coin to be released and to drop into the fare receiving receptacle of the fare box. his prevents possible unauthorized tampering or lock release resulting from holding a coin in the coin shuts, thereby permitting continuous or repeated entrance operation with a single fare. This .rra ement also prevents the possibility of causi 2 registration of an exit operation. The circuit arrangement of this modification is concerned principally with the cir c-uit of the fare box magnet. This circuit may be tra ed from trolley or other current source at through c, coil 6 wire a, auxiliary floor mat or tread contacts'SO, which re normally closed, wire 7, coin 72-, to sand at 73. The closing of this circuit closes contacts 67 and 66. 1 he closing of 67, closes aholding circuit for magnet 64;, to

ground 74. This maintains magnet- 6st energized until it is short CIICIllLGCl at 29, 32, as before explained. The closing of contacts 66, completes the circuit of the locking magnets from A, through a, 30, 27, Z), 45, c, 57, (Z, 66 to ground at 79.
In other respects the arrangement and operation is the same as before described.
In this arrangement contact of the first system is dispensed with and its function is performed by contact 70.
The circuit arrangement shown in Fig. 12 is substantially the same asthat shown in Fig. 11 except that instead of shorting the fare box relay cir nit, this circuit is opened by the operation of the exit arms, the contacts 82 S3, controlled by the exit arms being included directly in the circuit of the fare box magnet.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we h vs provided an exceedingly eiticient and simple means for controlling the passage of pt ons through a restricted passageway wherein persons may pass in either direction through the restricted passageway and registration of such passages therethrough effected for passages in one direction only. It will also be seen that passage through the restricted passageway in one direction is coin controlled, such passageway bein normally locked, the release of the lock being effected by the deposit of a coin. Moreover, it will also be seen that the passage of a person through the restricted passageway effects the displacement of barriers opposing such passageway, which barriers, when displaced, effect in various ways, the control of the locking devices for such barriers; also the passage of a person through such passageway is employed by utilizing such passage for the progress of aperson through the passageway to effect control of the apparatus. Obviously, if desired, a proper token might be used in place of the coin.
It will also be seen that we provide an apparatus of this nature which permits the easy and speedy handling and controlling of entrance and exit operations with accuracy and certainty of fare or entrance fee collection and registration as well as freedom and ease of passage in either entrance or exit ope 'ation with the least possible obstruction under normal conditions, but with eiiicient resistance in case of attempted unauthorized entrance operation.
Having now set forth the objects and nature of our invention and various arrangements embodying the principles thereof, what we claim as new and useful and of our own invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a passageway controlling apparatus, means to form a restricted passageway, in combination with barriers for said passagefor releasing said locking devices.
2. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said pas sageway, said barriers being free for operation in one direction, locking devices for loching said barriers against operation in the opposite direction, electropneumatic means for releasing said locking devices, a circuit for said electr-opneumatic means, and coin controlled devices for said circuit.
3. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said passageway, locking devices for said barriers, electropneumatic means for controlling said locking devices, a circuit for said electropneumatic means, coin controlled devices for said circuit, and means controlled by a passageway barrier for also controlling said circuit.
4. In apassageway controlling mecha nism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said pas sageway, locking devices for said barriers,- electropneumatic means for controlling said locking devices, a circuit for said electropneumatic means, coin controlled devices for said circuit, and means controlled by a per" son passing through said passageway for also controlling said circuit.
5.111 a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said passageway, locking devices for said barriers, electropneumatic means for controlling said locking devices, a circuit for said electropneumatic means, coin controlled devices for said circuit, and a movable member associated in said passageway and operated by a person traversing the passageway for also controlling said circuit.
6. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway, in combination with barriers for said passageway, electropneumatically operated devices for locking said barriers, coin operated devices for controlling said electropneumatic devices, means controlled by the displacement of a barrier of said passageway for also controlling said electropneumatic devices, and means operated by a persontraversing said passageway for also controlling said electropneumatic devices.
7. In' a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway, barriers disposed at opposite ends of said passageway, locking devices for said barriers, means whereby when the locking device for one of said barriers is released, that for the other is in locking relation, and
coincontrolled means to release one of said locking devices.
,8. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway, barriers disposed at opposite ends of said passageway, locking devices for alternately locking and releasing said barriers, and coin operated means for controlling said locking devices. a
9. In a passageway controlling mecha nism, means to form a restricted passageway,,barriers disposed opposite ends of said passageway, locking devices for alternately locking and releasing said barriers,
electropneumatioally operated devices for controlling said locking devices.
10. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway, barriers disposed at opposite ends of said passageways, locking devices for alternately locking and releasing said barriers, and means controlled by the displacement of one of said barriers for controlling said looking devices.
11. In a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passage way, barriers disposed at opposite ends of said passageway, locking devices for alternately locking and releasing said barriers, and movable means associated with said passageway and operated by a person traversing the same for controlling said locking de vices.

one of said barriers and to release the other when moved in alternate directions, and means controlled by the passage of a person through the passageway for controlling said locking bar.
16. in a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said passageway disposed at opposite ends thereof, a locking bar shiftable into position to lock one or said barriers and to release the other when moved in alternate directions, a cylinder having a piston connected to said locking bar for actuating the same, and means for controlling the supply and exhaust of an operating fluid to and from said cylinder.
17. in a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said passageway disposed at opposite ends there of, a locking bar sliii' table into position to lock one of said barriers and to release the other when moved in alternate directions, a cylinder having a piston connected to said locking bar for actuating the same, and coin controlled devices for controlling the supply and exhaust oi an operating liuid to and from said cylinder.
18. in a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said passageway disposed at opposite ends thereof, a locking bar sliil table into position to lock one of said barriers and to release he other when ,moved in alternate directions, a cylinder having a piston connected to said loci: bar for actuating the same, and means controlled by the displacement of one of said barriers for controlling the sup ply and exhaust of an operating fluid to and from said cylinder.
19. in a passageway controlling mechanism, means to form a restricted passageway in combination with barriers for said Jassageway disposed at opposite ends thereof, a locking bar shittable into position to lock one of said barriers and to release the other when moved in alternate directions, a cylinder having piston connected to said locking bar for actuating the same, and means associated with said passageway and operated by the passage ol a person theret-l'irough for controlling the supply and exhaustot an operating fluid to and from said cylinder.

28. in a passageway controlling mechanism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally locked and said exit barriers normally free, a relay magnet, a circuit therefor, means operated by the disolacement of the free exit barriers when operated in exit operation for closing the circuit of said relay magnet, contacts actuated by the energization of said relay, said contacts controlling a holding circuit for said relay independently of the barrier control circuit of said relay, and contacts arranged in said holding circuit, said contacts' controlled by the passage of a person through the passageway in exit operation.
29. In a passageway COIltrollillg mecha nism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally loclzed and said exit barriers normally free, a relay magnet, a circuit therefor, means operated by the displacement of the free exit barriers when operated in exit operation for closing the circuit of said relay magnet, contacts actuated by the energization of said relay, said contacts controlling a holding circuit for said relay independently of the barrier control circuit of said relay, a movable member associated with said passageway and operated by the passage of a person therethrough, said movable member controlling said holding circuit. 7
30. in a passageway controlling mechanism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally locked and said exit barriers normally free, a relay magnet, a circuit therefor, means operated by the displacement of the free exit barriers when operated in exit operation for closing arranged in said holding circuit and controlled by said yielding floor member.

In a passageway controlling mechanism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally locked, and said exit barriers normally tree, a relay magnet, a circuit therefor, means actuated by the operation of the free'exit barrier in exit operation for controlling the circuit of said relay, contacts controlled by said relay, a lock controlling circuit including said contacts to release the lock of the entrance barrier and to lock the exit barrier, and means operated by the entrance barriers in exit operation for controlling the lock circuit.

In a passageway controlling mechanism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally loclxed, and said exit barriers normally tree, a relay magnet, a circuit therefor, means actuated by the operation of the free exit barrier in exit operation'for controlling the circuit of said relay, contacts controlled by said relay, a lock controlling circuit including said contacts to release the loci-z of the entrance barrier and to loclc the exit barrier, and means operated by the entrance barriers in exit operation for controlling the lock circuit, and floor controlled contacts controlling the relay circuit.
In a passageway controlling mechanism, entrance and exit barriers, said entrance barriers being normally locked and the exit barriers normally free, locking devices for said barriers, means to release the lock for the entrance barriers, said means operating to lock the exit barriers, and means to maintain the exit barriers locked, said means controlled by the operation oi the entrance barriers.
