M0]? AND BROOM HOLDER.
Application filed March 8, 1926.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hangers or supports, and particularly to devices for hanging or supporting mops, brooms, and the like.
One object of the invention is to provlde a device of this character which is simple in construction, formed from few parts, and which can be manufactured at a low cost.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is easy to operate, and which will properly and securely grip the handle of a mop or broom, to suspend the same.
Another object is to provide a device of this character from which the handle can be easily and quickly removed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a broom handle engaged therewith.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device as seen from the rear, to show the lugs for limiting the upward movement of the handle gripping member, when the lugs, shown in Figure 1 are omitted.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a base, which is preferably formed from metal, having the flanges 11, on its marginal edges and the screw or nail receiving openings 12. Formed in the base, adjacent the lower end thereof, are the transversely alined openings 13, which receive the lugs 14, of the gripping member, represented as a whole by the numeral 15. This member 15 is in the form of a metal plate having an open-ended slot 16 formed therein, and extending from a point adjacent one end thereof through the opposite end, said open end of the slot being adapted to receive the handle of a mop or broom. The outer wall of the slot 16 inclines forwardly and toward the open end thereof, whereby to form a wedge opening. The other wall of the slot 16 is parallel with the base engaging edge of the plate, and is formed with a series of serrations 17 for biting engagement with the handle engaged in said opening. The lugs 14 are turned downwardly, and slightly laterally toward each other, at the back of the base plate, whereby to insure against accidental with- Serial No. 93,189.
drawal through the base plate. Struck up from the base plate engaging edge of the movable plate 15, are the vertical lugs 18, which engage against the front face of the base plate, to limit the upward pivotal movement of the plate 15. These lugs 18 may or may not be used, as desired, for the reason that the lugs 14;, when properly bent, at the back of the base plate 10, will serve to limit the swinging movement of the plate 15, upwardly. It will be noted that these lugs 14:, when the plate 15 is in normal position, are out of contact with the rear face of the base plate, thereby providing for movement of the plate. At one end of the plate 15 there is turned, at right angles, a triangular portion 19, one edge of which bears against the front face of the base plate 10, to limit the downward swinging movement of the plate 15, and whereby to maintain the plate in such position as to permit easy entrance of the handle of a mop or broom into the open end of the slot16.
In the operation of the device, the operator simply slips the handle of the mop or broom into the slot 16, from the open end thereof, raises the mop or broom until the head thereof is above the floor, and then releases the same, when the weight of the mop or broom will cause the plate 15 to swing downwardly, to a certain degree, so as to perform a wedging action of the walls of the slot on the handle, with the result that the implement will be effectively suspended. To remove the broom, it is only necessary to lift the same slightly, so as to cause the plate to swing upwardly to a slight degree, and then move the handle out through the open end of the slot.
What is claimed is:
1. A suspending device including a base having openings, a plate having lugs disposed through the openings and engaged with the reverse face of the base, lugs on the plate for engagement with the base to limit the upward movement of the plate, said plate having an implement handle receiving openended slot, said plate being arranged to gravitate under the weight of the mplement engaged therewith, and means on the end of the plate adjacent the closed end of the slot. for engagement with the base for limiting the downward movement of the plate.
2. A suspending device comprising a base having openings, a gravitating plate having angularly turned lugs engaged through said openings for pivotally mounting the plate on the base and for limiting the movement thereof in one direction, lugs on the plate for 5 engagement with the base for limiting the movement of the plate, said plate having a laterally directed open-ended handle receiving opening having a serrated Wall and a Wall diverging therefrom, and an end portion extended angularly to the plate for en- 1 gagement With the base to limit the downward movement of the plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
