NEEDLE MECHANISM: FOR SEWING MACHINES.

This invention relates to sewing machines, more particularly of the type having upper and lower eyed thread-carrying implements which cooperate with one another to form stitches. Machines of this type commonly embody a stop-motion device which automatically arrests the main-shaft in a predetermined angular position with the sewing instrumentalities clear of the work. Lower thread-carrying implements are generally diflicult to thread due to their positions of relative inaccessibility and an object of the present improvement is to provide for easy threading of the under thread-carryingimplement without the necessity of tripping the stop-motion device and turning the main sewing shaft, after which the machine must be run idly through a complete cycle of op- V erations to starting ready to sew.
To the attainment of the ends in view there is provided in the train of mechanism between the main sewing shaft and the under thread-carrying implement, a manually operable disconnecting means whereby such implement may be temporarily disconnected from its driving shaft and projected above the work-support for easy threading. The disconnecting means preferablycomprises a spring-pressed pin-member and a socket-member with independent carriers therefor connected, respectively, to the mainshaft and under thread-carrying implement.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a buttonhole sewing machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front end elevation, partly in section, of the under needle actuating mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2.

It will-:be understood that reciprocation of suo'h shafts imparts the usual reciprocating movements to the under needle 2, carrying the latter from a position below the needle-throat member or work-support '80 to a position above the same, and return. When the machine is at rest the lower needle is normally below the work-support 30 and the parts of its driving mechanism are in full line position, Fig. 2 With the parts in this position the operator may grasp the knob 44 ofthe pin 44 and withdraw the latter from the socket 37 whereupon the lever 33 may be manually shifted to dotted line position, Fig. 2, to project the needle 2 to easy threading position above the worksupport. 'After the needle 2 has beenthreaded, the operator should shift the lever back to initial position wherein the pin 44 registers with the socket 37 and enters the latter when released by the operator.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, in combination, a work-support, an under thread-carrying implement disposed below the work-support, a main-shaft, operative connections between said shaft and thread-carrying implement, a stop-motion device for stopping said mainshaft with the thread-carrying implement below the work-support, and means for projecting said thread-carrying implement above the work-support without disturbing said stop-motion device. 7
2. In a sewing machine, in combination, a work-support, an under thread-carrying implement disposed below the work-support, a main-shaft, operative connections between said shaft and thread-carrying implement, a stop-motion device for stopping said mainshaft with said thread-carrying implement below the work-support, said connections including coacting pin-and-socket members, independently movable carriers for said members connected, respectively, to the main-shaft and under thread-carrying im-' plement, one of said members being manually withdrawable from working engagement with the other member to permit the under thread-carrying implement to be pro jected above the work-support for easy threading without disturbing said stop-motion device.

In a sewing machine, the combination with a work-support and stitch-forming mechanism including an eye-pointed under thread-carrying implement disposed below the work-support, of a driving shaft, operative connections between said driving shaft and said under thread-carrying implement, and a stop-motion device for arresting said shaft with the under thread-carrying implement below the work-support, said oerative connections including a manually cp erable disconnecting means permitting the under thread-carrying implement to be projected above the work-support without disturbing the stop-motion device. 7

A sewing machine of the buttonhole type having, in combination, stitch-forming devices including upperand under-needle mechanisms, a rotary turret on which the under-needle mechanism is mounted to partake of its working movements, a needlethroat member, a work-holder, a main sewing shaft, driving connections between said main shaft and said under-needle mechanism, means for relatively moving the stitch-forming devices and work-holder to sew a group of stitches, and a stop-motion device for arresting said shaft at the completion of a sewing period with the needles out of the work, said driving connections including a manually operated element for uncoupling said under-needle mechanism from said main-shaft and projecting the under-needle above the needle-throat member. 5. A sewing machine of the buttonhole type having, in combination, stitch-forming devices includingupper and under needle mechanisms, a rotary turret on which the under needle-mechanism is mounted to partake of its working movements, a needle.
